Abstract

This invention relates to a writing aid but can also be related to drawing or painting. Pens and pencils and, to a lesser degree, artists' brushes are used by very many people and with no difficulty. However, people who have some disability of the hand-writing, drawing or painting - presents problems which are unknown or unnoticed by the average person. For example, people who have lost part or all of one or more fingers in an accident may find it extremely difficult to write, particularly if the index and middle fingers are damaged or missing in part or in whole. People with certain forms of arthritis or rheumatism of the hand find it extremely difficult to concentrate muscular effort into holding a pen or pencil in the normal way. This invention is, therefore, primarily designed to help these people. It is a holder comprising a shaped body, either solid or hollow in its construction, and has the means for releasably securing a pen, pencil or artist's brush. The holder is held in the palm of the hand when in use. A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows an outline of the holder 10 with the approximate position of the pen, pencil or brush Guide 20. Fig. 2 shows the holder with a pencil in position and the locking device is shown as a shaded area 40. Fig. 3 shows the locking device 40 situated at the other end of the holder and is again shown as a shaded area. At the opposite end is shown a cord or chain attachment for carrying purposes when not in use. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Writing aids Referring the the drawing Fig. 1, the holder 10 consists of an irregular shaped body, either solid or hollow, and made of the same or different materials in its totality.
The body of the holder has a pen, pencil or brush Guide 20 situated towards one end.
Into this Guide a pen, pencil or artist's brush is inserted. The instrument 30 is then pushed through this Guide until it projects at the opposite side as shown in Fig. 2.
When the user decides that the instrument is in the most comfortable position to suit his or her particular hand, it is locked into position by the locking device 40; for example, a threaded bolt which is screwed into the body from either end of the body so that it moves along the length of the body until it abuts against the instrument and so arrests the sliding movement of the instrument either into or out of the body.
To remove the instrument, release the locking device. When not in use the holder can be carried in the pocket or in a handbag. Alternatively it can have an attachment fitted to it so that it can be carried by a chain or cord. This attachment 50 can be part of the locking device, or separate to it, and can be situated anywhere on the holder. (Fig. 3).
1. A pen, pencil or artist's brush holder, hereinafter referred to as "the holder", comprising a shaped body, either solid or hollow in the construction, wherein means for releasably securing a pen, pencil or artist's brush (hereinafter referred to as "the instrument") to the holder is provided when the instrument is inserted into a guide which is situated on the holder.
2. A holder as described in Claim 1, where one or two shaped bodies, either solid or hollow are joined together to make one body in their totality.
3. A holder as described in Claim 1 or Claim 2 where one or two shaped bodies, either solid or hollow and made of different materials are joined together to make one body in their totality.
4. A-holder as described in Claim 2 or Claim 3 where one qr two shaped bodies, either solid or hollow and of different colours are joined together to make one body in their totality.
5. A holder as described in Claim 1, Claim 2, Claim 3 or Claim 4, wherein a guide is provided into which the instrument can be inserted and moved any distance along its length.
6. A holder as described in- Claim 5, wherein a locking device is provided on the holder to step the sliding movement of the instrument in the guide at any point along its length.
7. A holder as described in Claim 1, wherein is fixed an attachment to enable the holder to be carried by a cord or chain.
8. A holder as described herein with reference to Figs. 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
