Abstract

A display article, such as a beer tap handle or pump display, comprises a starter block, display material applied to one face of the starter block and at least one layer of partially or substantially transparent plastics material injection moulded onto the one face of the starter block and the display material thereon. The plastics material may be an acrylic material.

Description

SPECIFICATION Display article manufacturing process This invention relates to a method of manufacturing display articles, and in particular to a method of manufacturing display articles of the type wherein advertising material or the like is embedded within a body of at least partially transparent material.
It is conventional to manufacture such articles by casting the body. In such a process the mould is partially filled and then the advertising material or the like, i.e. solid motif or figure, is introduced into the mould on top of the material already present. The surface of the material in the mould remains tacky for a period during which filling of the mould is completed. It is inevitable in such a process that a surface exists between the two layers or thicknesses of material, and the presence of air in the mould leads to the formation of bubbles in the body. Both of these can give rise to reflections and other undesirable optical effects depending upon the circumstances of the lighting and viewing of product in use.
Similar problems can be caused by shrinkage of the body after casting, particularly in the case of relatively thick bodies of, for example, an acrylic material.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of manufacturing display articles of the above type, whereby the above-mentioned disadvantages are avoided or substantially alleviated.
The invention provides a method of manufacturing a display article comprising providing a starter block, applying to one face of said starter block the display material, and injection moulding at least one layer of an at least partially transparent material onto said one face.
The starter block may be provided by cutting said block from a sheet of material. Alternatively said starter block may be provided by injection moulding. As a further alternative the starter block may be produced by producing a first block and injection moulding a first layer on one face thereof, said first layer providing said one face at a face thereof remote from said starter block.
The display material may be applied to said one face by printing or blocking, by applying to said one face of a sheet-of material bearing said display material thereon, or by injection moulding said starter block in contact with said display material whereby said display material is disposed at said one face.
The or each layer injection moulded onto said one face may be of a substantially transparent material. Alternatively one layer adjacent said one face may be of translucent material, and one or more further layers of a substantially transparent material may be injection moulded onto said one layer.
Said layer or layers may be of a synthetic plastics material and may be of an acrylic material, which has favourable optical properties.
Said starter block may be of a synthetic plastics material and may be of an acrylic material.
The or each layer may have a thickness of up to 1/4" (64 mm), for example between 3/16" and 1/4" (48 to 64 mm) so as to reduce the possibility of "sinking" or undesirable shrinkage effects. The final thickness of the display article may be between 2" and 6" (12.7 to 152.4 mm).
By means of the invention the disadvantages are avoided or substantially alleviated.
During the injection moulding of the layer or layers on the starter body air is expressed from the mould by the temperature and pressure of the incoming moulding material. The air escapes through and between the mould parts, the fit of which is such as to allow the passage of air therebetween but not the passage of the moulding material.
The method of the invention is particularly suited to the production of beer tap handles, which may have a total thickness of 2" (12.7 mm) and beer pump displays, which may have a total thickness of 6" (152.4 mm). However the method is equally applicable to the production of other display articles, for example promotional articles of various forms in which display material is embedded in the article between a base or starter block and a layer or layers of a transparent material.
