Abstract

A paint container for use with a roller comprises a trough 2 for containing the paint to be loaded onto the roller, and a surface 1 on which the roller may be rolled to remove excess paint. The surface 1 on which the roller may be rolled to remove excess paint extends generally upwards from the trough 2. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Paint container The present invention relates to a paint container and in particular is concerned with a container for enabling paint to be loaded onto a roller.
Conventionally, paint rollers are used in conjunction with a paint container in the form of a tray having a sloping, often ribbed, base surface which is only slightly inclined relative to the horizontal and a modest amount of paint is poured into the deeper end of the tray. In use, the roller is dipped into the paint and surplus paint is removed from the roller by rolling it over the inclined surface. The slight inclination permits the surplus paint to drain back into the reservoir at the deeper end of the tray.
This form of paint container has several disadvantages. First, the tray must rest on a flat firm platform and when working at the top of a ladder such a surface may not be readily available. Second, the reservoir can only contain a limited amount of paint and must be refilled frequently. Furthermore, handling of the tray is cumbersome and spillages are not infrequent.
With a view to mitigating at least some of the foregoing disadvantages, the present invention provides a paint container for use with a roller comprising a trough for containing the paint to be loaded onto the roller, and a surface on which the roller may be rolled to remove excess paint, characterised in that in use the surface on which the roller may be rolled to remove excess paint extends generally upwards from the trough.
Prefereably, the trough is formed with a stable base so that the container may be used while resting on the floor.
Because of the attitude of the surface, less space is required on which to rest the container and furthermore the amount of paint that may be poured safely into the trough is not so restricted.
Advantageously, a carrying handle is provided on the said surface for enabling the container to be carried or suspended. Such a handle assists in transportation of the container enabling it to be supported steadily with only one hand when climbing a ladder, for example. The handle also assists in supporting the container when working in places where there is no convenient surface on which to rest the trough. The handle may simply be a cut-out portion formed in the surface at its end remote from the trough.
Conveniently, a clip may be provided to be secured to the handle of the roller to permit the roller to be suspended on the edge of the handle cut-out. This further assists carrying since the roller and the paint container can now be carried safely with one hand.
In the preferred embodiment, the container is formed of a plastics material. Such a construction makes for a lighter, more durable and less costly articie.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a paint container of the invention.
The container in the drawing is assembled from two mouldings A and B which are shown separated in the interest of clarity but which in use are suitably glued or welded to one another along flanges 6 and 7. The container includes a trough or reservoir 2 and a tray 1 which extends vertically from the trough 2. At its upper end, the container has a carrying' handle 5 and a hole 8 from which it can be suspended.
The mouldings A and B have portions 3 and 4 which on assembly defined a base on which the container may rest stably. When filled with paint the container has a low centre of gravity making it more stable therefore the container cannot easily be tipped over even if it should be brushed against.
If the roller is fitted with a hook or clip, which can either be formed as part of the roller or attached to it, then the roller may be suspended from the handle cut-out 5 to assist in carrying the container and the roller with one hand. The vertical disposition of the surface on which the roller is rolled to remove excess paint reduces the space requirement of the container, enables the container to be suspended even when full of paint, assists in transportation and also enables excess paint to be returned to the trough more efficiently.
It will be appreciated that various modifications may be made to the container without departing from the scope of the invention as set out in the claims. In particular, the container may be made of other suitable materials, for example of sheet metal and it is envisaged that a disposable container may be formed of a paper or plastics coated or impregnated cardboard.
