Abstract

An absorbent nappy (10) includes an impermeable layer (12), an absorbent layer (14), a layer of tissue (16) and a permeable layer (18), at each end of the permeable layer (18) are two widths of adhesive (20 and 22). The density of the adhesive in the widths (20 and 22) differ and provide a double barrier to prevent leakage from the ends of the nappy. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to absorbent nappies This invention relates to absorbent liners, for example, liners for use in construction of babies nappies.
A common problem with absorbent nappies is that excess fluid tends to leak from the waistband area of the liner causing soiling of the outer garments and skin irritation.
The present invention seeks to provide an absorbent nappy and method of making the same which will prevent or minimise leakage of fluid from the liner in the area of the waistband.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided an absorbent nappy comprising layers of various materials, the layers including an impermeable backing layer, an absorbent layer and a permeable layer, the impermeable and permeable layers being bonded to one another to contain the absorbent layer, the permeable layer including at each end thereof two widths of adhesive coating arranged such that the widths of adhesive coating at the extremities of the permeable layer are bonded directly to the impermeable layer and the two inner widths of adhesive coating are bonded for the most part to the absorbent layer, the density of the adhesive on the outer widths of adhesive coating being less than the density of the adhesive coating on the inner widths.
The density of adhesive coating on the outer width can be in the range of ten to twenty grammes per square metre, whilst the density of the adhesive coating on the inner widths can be in the range of thirty to fifty grammes per square metre.
Preferably the density of adhesive coating on the outer width is approximately fifteen grammes per square metre, whilst the density of the adhesive coating on the inner widths is approximately forty grammes per square metre.
The inner and outer widths of adhesive coating at each end of the permeable layer can overlap one another and the absorbent layer can be provided with a layer of tissue adjacent the permeable layer.
According to a further feature of the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing an absorbent nappy of the type which includes an absorbent layer contained between an impermeable layer and a permeable layer, the impermeable and permeable layers being bonded together, comprising the step of applying on the inner surface and at each end of the permeable layer, two widths of adhesive coating of differing densities, the density of the adhesive coating at the ends of the permeable layer being less than the density of the adhesive coating on the width adjacent the extremities.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 shows a plan view of an absorbent nappy according to the present invention and Fig. 2 is a part section on line 2-2 of the liner shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the Figures an absorbent nappy 10 includes an impermeable layer 12, an absorbent layer 14, a layer of tissues 16 and a permeable layer 18, the layers 14 and 16 being sandwiched between the layers 12 and 18. The impermeable layer can be made from 25mm polythene, the absorbent layer can be untreated fluff woodpulp, the layer 16 of tissue can be of 19 grammes per square meter weight, and the permeable layer can be a nonwoven material.
The absorbent layer 14 is shorter in length than both the layers 12 and 18 to enable these latter two layers to be bonded together.
In order to provide a leak-proof seal at each end of the nappy and to improve the feel of the liner on skin, the inner surface of each end of the permeable layer is coated with two widths of adhesive 20 and 22 preferably an adhesive of the EVA type. The density of the coating 20 is less than the density of the coating 22 and the widths of the coating and the length of absorbent material are adjusted so that the width 20 can be bonded directly to the impermeable layer 12, whilst the width 22 adheres substantially wholly to the absorbent material, though part of the width can adhere directly to the layer 12.
The two widths 20 and 22 can overlap one another though they can abutt one another without any overlap.
The density of the coating 20 can be in the range of ten to twenty grammes per square metre and the density of the coating 22 can be in the range of thirty to fifty grammes per square metre. Preferably the density of the coating 20 is approximately fifteen grammes per square metre and the density of the coating 22 is preferably forty grammes per square metre.
The layers 12 and 18 are bonded together by a combination of heat and pressure along the widths of adhesive coatings 20 and 22, with the coating 22 forming the initial barrier against the leakage of fluid absorbed by the material 14. The bonding between the adhesive coating 20 and the layer 12 forms a continuous and unbroken seal across the width of the liner and being impermeable prevents moisture loss through the end of the liner. As the adhesive coating is of a much lower density than the coating 22, there is less risk of having a harsh edge to the nappy liner where it contacts the baby's skin and give a softer feel to the end barrier.
A length of elastic 24 is attached to the inside of the layer 12 so that in use, the nappy is a snug and firm fit on the legs of the wearer. Also adhesive faced tabs 26 are attached to the outside of the layer 12 to secure the nappy aroung the waist of the wearer.
The sides of the nappy are sealed by fluing the layers 12 and 18 together at their side edges and the inside of the layer 12 is provided with approximately parallel lines of glue running the length of the nappy. These lines of glue permeate into the tissue 16 and absorbent material 14 holding it in place.
The method of manufacturing a nappy as described above includes the steps of applying to the inner surface of the permeable layer 18 the two widths of coating 22 of differing densities simultaneously.
