Abstract
A lamp assembly for a skip comprises a mounting bracket (2) of inverted U-shape to which is welded a lamp cage (1) for housing a lamp (11). With the lamp cage empty, the mounting bracket is hooked over the rim of a wall (23) of the skip and a bolt (20) is secured into a threaded hole (19) in one arm (16) of the bracket so that the bolt passes through a passage (23) in the skip wall as far as the other arm (17) of the bracket, thereby securing the lamp assembly to the skip wall. The lamp is then introduced into the lamp cage and retained there by a lockable retaining bar which is passed through opposed slots (12) in a base ring (3) of the lamp cage, thereby concealing the head (21) of the bolt. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A lamp assemblyfor illuminating a skip
This invention relates to a lamp assembly for use in illuminating a skip, particularly at night.
Skips are usedforcollecting rubbish during building work and may be left in the roadway, particularly in residential areas. In the interests of safety, it is requirement that the skip left overnight in a roadwayorstreet, be illuminated and an owner of the skip may be fined if his skip is not properly illuminated at night. Conventionally, skips are illuminated by hanging a lamp freely onto the side of the skip. However, such known lamps may be easily removed or otherwise subjected to vandalism.
It is an object ofthe present invention to provide a lamp assemblyforaskipwhich cannot cannot be readily removed from the skip or subjected to vandalism.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a lamp assembly for a skip comprising a lamp cagefor receiving and protecting a lamp, a mounting bracket to which the lamp cage is attached and which is adapted to hook over a sidewall ofthe skip, and securing means accessible only from inside the cage for securing the mounting bracket to the side wall of the skip.
In an embodiment of the invention, the bracket is substantially U-shaped and the securing means comprises a fixing boltwhich is screwed from the inside ofthe lamp cage th rough a threaded aperture in an adjacent arm of the mounting bracket so asto pass through a corresponding hole in the skipto secure the bracket to the skip.
A lamp assembly embodying the invention includes a lamp which is held captive in the lamp cage by fastening means co-operating with the lamp cage.
Conveniently, the lamp is introduced into the lamp cagethrough an opening in the bottom ofthecage and the fastening means comprises a retaining bar adapted to be passed through the cage after insertion ofthe lamp so asto prevent withdrawal ofthe lamp through the bottom opening ofthe lamp cage.
In orderthatthe invention may be readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the lamp assembly embodying the invention forilluminating a skip at night;
Figure2 is a plan viewofthe lamp assembly; Figure3 is a plan view of a retaining barofthe assembly; and Figure4isasideviewofthe retaining bar of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, a lamp assembly for illuminating a skip comprises a domed lamp cage 1 attached to a mounting bracket 2 of inverted
U-shape.
The lamp cage 1 isformed from strips of mild steel and comprises a base ring 3to which are welded the ends 4 and 5 of a first arched protective member 6.
One end 7 of a second arched protective member8 is welded to the ring 3 and the other end 9 ofthe
member 8 is welded to the bracket2which is also
welded to the base ring 3. The member 8 passes over
the member 6 and the two members are welded
together at the apex ofthe lamp cage. An
intermediate ring 10 parallel to the base ring 3
interconnects the members 6 and 8 to which it is welded. A lamp 11 indicated by dashed lines in
Figure 1 is receivable within the lamp cage 1.
The base ring 3 is provided with a pairof diametrically opposed slots 12 in the region ofthe
ends of the arched member 6 to receive a retaining
bar 13 (see Figures 3 and 4) which has an enlarged
head '14 at one end formed bya turned over end portion ofthe barand an aperture 15 at the other end.
The mounting bracket2 hasfirstand second
parallel arms 16 and 17 joined buy a connecting portion 18. Thefirstarm 16 iswelded tothe protective member 8 and to the ring 3 as shown in
Figure 1,so thatthe bracket is slightly inclined relative to the protective member 6. The first arm 16 is also provided with a threaded hole 19 adapted to receive a bolt 20 having a head 21.
In use ofthe described lamp assembly, the mounting bracket 2, with the lamp removed, is first hooked overthetop of a side wall 22 ofthe skip in the region of a passage 23 extending through the wail of the skip, so that thefirst arm ofthe bracket lies outside the skip, the connecting portion 18 ofthe- bracket extends overthe rim ofthe skip wall 17 and the second wall of the bracket lies within the skip. The bolt20 isthen screwedfromwithin the empty lamp cage 1 into the screw-threaded hole 18 in the first arm 16 ofthe bracket so as to extend through the aperture 23 in the wall of the skip as far as the second arm 17 of the bracket 2.In this position, the head 20 of the screw 19 lies within the lamp cage 1 adjacentthefirst arm 15ofthe mounting bracket.
The lamp 11 (indicated by dashed lines in Figure 1) isthen introduced into the lamp cage through an open base ring 3 of the cage 1 and is retained in the lamp cage by passing the retaining bar 13through the aligned slots 12 in the base ring 3 and then securing the retaining bar in position using a padlock or other lockable device passed through the locking aperture 14. The head 14 ofthe retaining bar of course prevents the barfrom being drawn completely through the slots 12. In this position, the retaining bar 13forms a support on which the lamp 11 rests and prevents the lamp from being withdrawn through the base ring 3 ofthe lamp cage.
The head ofthe bolt 20 is also now concealed by the lamp 11.
