Description
SPECIFICATION
A sealed cover, plug or alike and a method to its manufacture
This invention concerns a sealed cover, plug or alike comprising a body portion and one dosing opening or several dosing openings to be closed by means of a closing flap or several flaps as well as a method to the manufacture of such a cover, plug or alike.
Most usually, sealed- covers, plugs or alike described above are manufactured in two parts so that the body portion with a closing flap hinged thereon is manufactured in one piece and the part of the cover provided with dosing openings is manufactured separately.
This is based thereon that the closing flap or flaps of the cover are usually sealed by means of a perforation along the sides of the closing flap, wherefore the cover as such is not tight.
Because the closing flap then shall be manufactured in its closed position, the cover can be provided with dosing openings only by making a separate cover portion to be arranged below the closing flap, which cover portion is provided with dosing openings in question, and on the other hand, by providing the closing flap with a sealing face to seal the dosing openings in question. This two-piece structure makes the manufacture of the cover a lot more difficult. On the other hand, the fact in itself that two separate parts are used already increases manufacturing costs and especially, it is very difficult to automatize an accurate assembly of these two parts. Additionally, the accuracy of size of the parts must be preserved in order to- accomplish a functional final product with a tight cover.
The object of the present invention is to provide sealed cover, plug or alike of a new type, which is specially suitable to be attached to cardboard blanks for the preservation and dosage of spices and baking supplies, as vanillin sugar and baking powder, and the manufacture and use of which is not associated with the problems mentioned above. The object of the invention is also a method to the manufacture of such a cover, plug or alike.
In the sealed cover, plug 6r alike of the invention, this has been realized so that the closing flap or flaps and the body portion form with their mutual sealing faces a onepiece unit and that the body portion and/or the closing flap or flaps show restricted areas along which the closing flap or flaps and the body portion are melted together. Thus, in the method of the invention, the body portion and the closing flap or flaps are compressionmoulded in one piece when the flap or flaps are in open position, the closing flap or flaps are pressed into closed position and the closing flap or flaps are sealed to the body portion by melting together the closing flap or flaps and the body portion along the restricted areas. The restricted areas are preferably formed by a lug or lugs connected to the rest of the closing flap by means of a perforation.
To facilitate the fastening, the lug surface can be provided with nodules fastening on the body portion by melting. In this way, a substantially permanent fastening is provided between the body portion and the lug. Alternatively, the closing flap or flaps can be sealed by melting the nodules e.g. by means of ultrasonic heating, which nodules are preferably located on the counter face of the body portion near its outer periphery. Then, the ultrasonic head is preferably annular so that the turning position of the cover with respect to the melting head can be arbitrary. Then, the nodules themselves form a seal, which is broken when the closing flap or flaps are opened.
Thus, according to the invention is provided a cover which can be manufactured in one piece and which does not presuppose an afterwards assembly but only a sealing, which can be simply automatized. Additionally, it is possible to maintain the mutual dimensioning of the parts of the cover compressionmoulded in one piece very accurately, whereby the cover can certainly be made tight, too.
In the following, the cover of the invention and its structure in more detail are described with reference to the enclosed drawing, whereby
Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of a cover, plug or alike according to the invention after compression-moulding, but before the closing flap is sealed, and
Figrue 2 shows a second embodiment of the cover, plug or alike according to the invention after compression-moulding, but before the closing flap is sealed.
The cover shown in Figure 1 comprises a body portion 1 provided with a dosing opening 2 to be closed by a closing flap 3. The body portion 1 is formed round and provided with a cylindrical connection part 10 facing away from the closing flap 3 and to be pushed into e.g. a card- . board blank so that it is locked therein by means of ridges on the connection part 10. On the body portion 1, there is a closing flap 3 connected to the body portion by means of a hinge 9. It shall be mentioned that also several such closing flaps could be used, whereby some of the dosing openings could be provided with e.g.
strewing holes. The lower surface of the closing flap 3 is provided with a sealing face 6 for the dosing opening 2. In the embodiment of
Figure 1, the sealing face 6 is formed to a cylindrical part somewhat projecting from the counter face 8 of the closing flap 3 pointing to the direction of the body portion and possibly provided with a small "locking press button" (not shown). Then, when the closing flap is closed, the sealing cylinder 6 in question is arranged into close contact with the sealing face 5 of the dosing opening 2 whereby it locks the closing flap 3 into closed position.
A condition of such a function is, of course that the dimensions of the sealing cylinder 6 and the sealing face 5 of the dosing opening 2 correspond to each other accurately. This can, however, be rather easily realized, especially when the cover of the invention is compression-mouided in one piece in the position of Figure 1 when the closing flap 3 is open.
When the closing flap 3 is closed, the cover is for the sake of neat appearance plunged into the level of the body portion 1 so that the upper surface of the closing flap 3 is arranged on the same level with the upper surface of the body portion.
When the cover of the invention is compression-moulded in the position shown in Figure 1, the following step is to close the closing flap 3 and to seal it to the body portion
1. As mentioned above, the closing flap 3 is due to its sealing cylinder 6 locked to the body portion 1 when it is pressed against its counter face 7 at the body portion. In order to effect the sealing, this counter face 7 is in the embodiment of Figure 1 provided with two projecting pyramidal nodules 4, which are melted after the closing flap 3 is closed.
These nodules 4 can actually be located anywhere on the stop face 7 of the body portion
1 or on the counter face 8 of the closing flap 3, but it is preferable, especially as to a visual control of the sealing that they are located near the outer edge of the cover. The nodules 4 can be melted in several known ways, as by means of a lateral resistance heating, but it is obviously most preferable to carry out this melting by means of ultrasonic heating by using an annular ultrasonic head. Then, the turning position of the cover with respect to the ultrasonic head is of no significance, but it is only necessary to direct the cover with respect to the ultrasonic head: Thus, it is possible to automatize this step very easily.
When the cover is opened by putting e.g. a thumb into a recess 11 in the body portion 1, the sound effected with the sealing unbroken is different from the sound effected with the sealing broken in advance. To arrange the nodules 4 on the body portion or on the closing flap near their outer periphery gives also a possibility to a visual control of the sealing.
This possibility can be accomplished in many other ways, too. One such embodiment of the invention making a very reliable visual control possible is shown in Figure 2.
The embodiment of the cover, plug or alike of the invention shown in Figure 2 differs from the embodiment of Figure 1 only with respect to the structural elements effecting the sealing. The other structural elements of the embodiment of Figure 2 are indicated by the same referance numerals as the corresponding parts in Figure 1. in the embodiment of Figure 2, the closing flap 3 comprises near its outer edge two lugs 12 connected to the rest of the closing flap by means of a perforation 13.
The surfaces of these lugs 12 arranged into close contact with the stop face 7 of the body portion 1 are both provided with two pyramidal nodules 4. These nodules cannot, however, be considered necessary, because in this embodiment, the lugs 12 (there can be one or several of them) and the body portion are permanently melted together. When the closing flap is opened, the perforation 13 is now broken and not the seal accomplished by melting the nodules in the embodiment of Figure 1. For fastening the lugs 12 by melting, it may be necessary to use a directed ultrasonic heating instead of the annular ultrasonic head of the embodiment of Figure 1.
The cover of the invention and the method to its manufacture have been described above by means of only two example embodiments and it is understandable that several alterations can be made therein without, however, deviating from the scope of protection defined by the enclosed claims. Thus, for instance the shape, size and/or amount of the lugs and/or nodules accomplishing the sealing can vary quite arbitrarily. As the only restriction can be considered that the seal shall be reiatively easy to break. Additionally, it is clear that there are other obvious alternatives to make a visual control of the nodules or sealing areas possible than the ones described above.
