Description
SPECIFICATION
Boom assembly for a work machine
The present invention relates to a boom assembly for a work machine, defined in the introductorysection of the appended patent claim 1.
The types of work machines currently used in connection with lorries, tractors and forest work machines are generally boom cranes consisting of a hoist boom pivotally attached to the work machine in question, and of a bending boom pivotally attached to the far end of the hoist boom, wherein various working equipment can be attached to the far end of the bending boom in orderto carry out different work tasks. In order to extend the working range, i.e.
the scope ofthe crane, the bending boom is often provided with a telescopic jib whereby the working range can be enlarged by roughly 50% of the length of the bending boom.
In the prior artthere is also known a method for extending the length of the boom assembly by first providing the bending boom with an articulated jib and then adding yet another articulated jib thereto, so that the whole boom assembly consists of four interarticulated arms. As regards the prior art, the following publications are referred to: US 2598517, US 3 221 908, US 3 253 716, and US 3 557 967.
The range of the boom assembly can naturally be enlarged by increasing the length of each arm. In that case, however, the whole apparatus becomes too heavy two be installed in light, farmer-type grab bucket loaders and the like. Consequently, the conventional heavy, long-range boom arrangements can be employed only in heavy duty machines.
The objectofthe present invention is to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks. Another, specific object of the invention is to introduce a low-cost, simple and light boom assembly for a work machine, which boom assembly can be installed even in con nectionwith lightfarmer-type work machines, such as grab bucket loaders and tractors, and which has a working range almost twice as wide as any prior art equipment designed for light work machines.
The characteristic novel features ofthe invention are apparent from the claims section of the appended patent claims.
In the boom assembly of the invention, there can also be employed conventional telescopic arms con nectable to the jib, by aid of which the range ofthe boom assembly can be further extended. According to the invention, the boom assembly is provided with a supporting means whereby the boom assembly can be secured to the ground during the working performance. The supporting means may lean for instance against the bending boom or against the jib.
One advantage ofthe invention, as compared to the prior art, is that while for instance collecting logs inaforest, the damages causedforyoung growth are diminished because the created fresh tracks are not as numerous as while working with ordinary equipment. Moreover, the light structure and simple operation of the boom assembly provide forthe use of lighterwork machines than before.
In the following the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the appended drawing, which is an illustration of a preferred embodiment of the boom assembly of the invention.
The apparatus of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises the hoist boom 1, the near end whereof is mountable, by conventional technique, on the employed work machine. At the far end ofthe hoist boom 1 there is pivotally attached the bending boom 3 which is moved, with respect to the hoist boom 1, by means of the actuator 2 which is a hydraulic cylinder. At the far end ofthe bending boom 3, the near end ofthe jib 4 is pivotally attached so thatthe jib 4 can be moved, with respect to the bending boom 3, supported by theircommon articul- ation 11 and driven by the actuator7 which is a hydraulic cylinder and is pivotally attached both to the bending boom 3 and the jib 4. Atthefarend ofthe jib 4, the near end ofthe auxiliary jib 5 is connected by means of the articulation 12.The auxiliary jib 5 is moved, with respect to the jib 4, supported by the articulation 12 and driven by the actuator 8 which again is a hydraulic cylinder. At the far end ofthe auxiliary jib 5there is installed, by means of conventional technique, the log grab 6. In addition to this, the apparatus comprises the supporting means 10 provided in the part 9 of the jib 4, which part is pressed againstthe ground while working. Thus the jib 4 can be firmly secured againstthe ground even if the ground is soft.
The preferred embodiment of the invention, illustrated in the drawing, is operated as follows. While collecting logs in a forest with light equipment, the hoist boom 1 and the bending boom 3 are extended towards the logs so thatthe far end of the bending boom 3 its finally pressed against the ground.
Thereafterthejib 4, run by the actuator 7, and the auxiliary jib 5, run by the actuator 8, reach towards the logs to be collected, whereafterthe logs are picked up by employing the log grab 6. Irrespective of the considerable length of the arm assembly, the work machine is not subjectto strong inclining forces becausetheapparatus is supported, by intermediation of the support plate 10, firmly on the ground. Thus it is unnecessary to use any extra supportfootingswhich are commonly used in prior art cranes and in the work machines housing the said cranes.
The invention is particularly well suited for farm tractors with a light construction, to be employed in small-farm forestwork. The invention is not, however, limitedtothis line of application only, but itcan also be applied in heavy duty work machines, as well as in lorries and corresponding vehicles ofvarying sizes. The actuators of the boom assembly are conventional hydraulic cylinders, the pressure hoses whereof are attached to the frame 1,3 and 4, and proceed in accordance with the frame structure.
Similarly, the log grab 6 iocated at the far end of the auxiliaryjib 5, is a device operated in conventional fashion, and it can be replaced by various other working devices. Accordingly, the above described preferred embodiment and application of the invention do not in anyway restrict the invention and its use, but the various applications of the invention can be largely modified within the scope of the in ventional idea presented in the appended patent claims. Thus for instance the support apparatus can be, apart from a support plate, also a supporting leg oranyothertype of supporting member leaning againstthe ground.
