Abstract
219,167. Ney, A. F. July 10, 1923. Packing and filling granular or pulverulent materials into cartons. -Relates to machines for filling granular or pulverulent materials into cartons closed at the bottom and with flaps at the top, two of which are adapted to interengage by means of a tongue and slot. According to the invention, the material is delivered from a supply hopper to an underlying series of pockets circumferentially arranged and adapted to register in succession with cartons in receptacles on endless chains. As shown, cartons C are fed by hand at the position F, Fig. 1, into bottomless pockets P flared at the opposite edges 2. The pockets are carried by an endless chain 1 passing round sprockets 4, 5, and rest on a base-plate B. The cartons are moved by intermittent steps beneath a reciprocating plate 23, Figs. 2 and 3, tapered at one end. which turns the flaps 17, 18 to the right, Fig. 3, and opens out the side flaps 19, 20, and on the return movement turns the flap 17 of the centre carton in Fig. 3 over to the left, in which position it is held until the carton passes beneath a plate 34, the four flaps 17 - - 20 being then completely open. The plate 34 extends around the sprocket 5 and separates the cartons from measuring pockets 135, Fig. 4, on the flange 104 of a rotating plate 105 on the shaft 7 carrying the sprocket. The material is fed into a hopper 38, and falls into the measuring pockets 135 rotating in synchronism with the carton carriers. The supply hopper is pivoted at 39 and vibrated by a cam with a wavy slot engaging a roller 41. On the arrival of the pocket above a rectangular opening 47 the contents are discharged into the carton by a plunger 48. A stop 63, Fig. 6, rises through a slot 64 in the base-plate to ensure correct registration during the transference. A brush 74, Fig. 1, sweeps through the measuring pockets and removes adhering particles into a container 75. In order to close the flaps of the filled carton, a plate 76, Figs. 1 and 6, turns down the front flap 17 and a reciprocating folder 78 turns down the flap 18. Converging arms 84, 85 turn over the remaining flaps 19, 20 and a finger 86 operates as shown in Fig. 10 to force the peaked flap 20 into the slot 22 of the flap 19. A discharge plunger 93 forces the closed carton out of the machine.
