Abstract

219,165. Dicker, S. G. S., (Owens Bottle Co.). July 9, 1923. Delivering molten metal.-A device for feeding charges of molten glass comprises a receptacle supplied with glass from a furnace and having a discharge aperture in the bottom, a regulator or plug depending into the receptacle over the opening and means for continuously rotating the plug, and also the receptacle, to cause the glass in the receptacle to move around the axis of the discharge opening and relatively to the point at which the glass flows into the receptacle. In the construction shown in section in Fig. 1, metal flows from a tank 21 into a bowl-shaped receptacle 24 which has an outlet 25 and is supported on a circular track 30 by rollers 29. The receptacle is rotated about a vertical axis by means of bevel gears 37, 38 and a. driving-shaft 35. The discharge of metal through the outlet 25 is controlled by a plug 42 which is reciprocated vertically by a cam mechanism and is rotated, preferably at the same angular speed as the receptacle, by means of gearing connected with the driving shaft 35. The charges of metal are severed by shear blades 69 mounted below the aperture 25 and operated periodically in synchronism with the plug. The shear blades are opened and closed by a rocking-arm 78 which is actuated by stationary cams 79, 80. The rotation of the receptacle cause an even distributions of metal around the plug and secures an even distribution of temperature in the column of metal discharged from the orifice. In a modification, the plug is formed with an axial bore which terminates at the lower end of the plug in a cup-like cavity. The bore is periodically connected to a source of partial vacuum which serves to retard the flow of metal through the orifice 25 at about the timethe shearing-device operates. In another form of this construction, the plug is not reciprocated but the axial bore is alternately connected with a source of partial vacuum and with an air pressure supply. The suction retards the flow of metal through the outlet 25 and the air pressure assists in expelling the metal and forming a gob of suitable form.
