Abstract
Carbonating apparatus for preparation of carbonated drinks includes a water reservoir 1 having an opening 2 closed by a lid 3. Front part 4 of the apparatus casing accommodates a pressure chamber which is filled with a predetermined quantity of water from the reservoir 1 for carbonation. Once carbonated, the water is dispensed through spout 5 into a vessel 6. A replaceable filter 14 consisting of an activated carbon material 15 contained in a holder 16 ensures that all fresh water poured into the reservoir 1 is filtered prior to carbonation to remove undesirable tastes, odours and/or chlorine, etc. from the water. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Carbonating apparatus
This invention relates to carbonating apparatus and in particular, though not exclusively, to domestic carbonating apparatus for carbonating waterto makefizzy beverages.
One such type of carbonating apparatus is described in ourcopending European Patent
Application No. 85304441.0 (Publication No.
0168990) wherein a reservoirforstoring fresh water is connected to a pressure chamber, so that a predetermined quantity ofthe water can flow from the reservoir into the chamber. A replaceable gas cylinder, with an associated valve assembly, is connected to a gas nozzle in the chamber, so that pressurised gas from the cylinder can be introduced into the water in the chamberto effect carbonation of the water, which can be subsequently dispensed and mixed with a flavoured concentrate, as required.
Carbonating apparatus ofthis type is advantageous because a relatively large quantity of water can be stored in the reservoir and a smaller quantity thereof can be carbonated and stored in the pressure chamber and subsequently dispensed as it is needed. However, the quality of some beverages produced can be notably reduced by the presence of undesirable tastes, odours, chlorine, etc. in the fresh water stored in the reservoir.
It is therefore an object ofthe present invention to provide a carbonating apparatus ofthe afore-mentioned type, which provides a substantial improvement in the quality of fizzy beverages produced.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided carbonating apparatus including a reservoir for retaining liquid to be carbonated, means for introducing pressurised gas into a quantity of the liquid to effect carbonation ofthe liquid, and means for dispensing the carbonated liquid, the apparatus further including meansfor filtering the liquid priorto said carbonation.
The filter means preferably consists of an activated carbon filter material retained in a suitable holder and supported within the reservoir, so that liquid poured into the reservoir is constrained to pass through the filter before being carbonated.
Preferably, the apparatus is also arranged so that liquid retained in the reservoir is capable of being dispensed, after filtering thereof, without being carbonated.
The invention will now be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the invention, and Figure2shows an enlarged cross-sectional view through I-I of part of the embodiment in Figure 1.
Figure 1 showsacarbonatingapparatusincluding a water reservoir 1 having an inlet 2, through which the reservoir is fiiled with fresh water and which is closed by a lid 3 (shown in Figure 1 in the open position). Front part 4 of the casing of the apparatus accommodates a pressure chamber (not shown), which is filled with a predetermined quantity of waterfor carbonation from the reservoir 1 .The pressure chamber has an outlet spout 5, through which the water, when carbonated, is dispensed into a vessel, such as a glass 6, positioned on a platform 7. Rear part 8 of the casing accommodates a replaceable gas cylinder (not shown), which is connected to the pressure chamber, to introduce gas into the chamber to effect carbonation of the water therein. The carbonated water can be dispensed, via spout 5, as it is required, and when the pressure chamber is empty, it can be replenished with fresh water for carbonation from the reservoir 1.
User-operable rotary control 9 and slideable control 10 are provided to effect replenishment ofthe pressure chamberwith fresh water, carbonation of the water in the chamber, release of excess pressurised gas from the chamber prior to dispensing, and dispensing ofthe carbonated water via the spout 5.
Figure 2 shows an enlarged cross-sectional view of the reservoir 1, shown in Figure 1. Referring now to
Figures 1 and 2, the apparatus also includes a support 11, located within the reservoir 1 and connected to, or rested upon, upper periphery 12 of the reservoir. The support 11 is shaped at its base portion 13 to retain a filter 14, which consists of an activated carbon material 15 contained in a holder 16.
As can be seen from Figure 2, the inlet 2 (closed by the lid 3 in Figure 2) is formed in the top ofthe support 11. The base portion 13 ofthe support 11 is provided with an opening 17, overwhich the filter 14 is positioned, so that fresh water poured into the support 11 in the reservoir 1,through the inlet 2, is constrained bythesupport 11 to passthroughthe filter 14andthe opening 17 before it is passed to the pressure chamber for carbonation.
This arrangement therefore ensures that all fresh water, which is used for carbonation bythe apparatus, is filtered prior to carbonation to remove undesirable tastes, odours and/or chlorine, etc. from the water, thereby substantially improving the quality of fizzy beverages made with the carbonated water.
The filter 14 is preferably removable from the support 11 so that it can be replaced when the filter material 15 becomes blocked due to repeated use.
Thefilter 14may be cylindrical ordisc-shapedand may contain any other suitable filter material as an alternative to activated carbon material.
As an alternative embodiment to that shown in
Figures 1 and 2, the support 1 1,with thefilter 14 in its base, may be positioned above, rather than inside, the reservoir 1,so asto form a further reservoir.
Fresh water poured into the support 11 therefore passes through the filter 14 and opening 17 into the reservoir 1, where it is stored until it is required to be carbonated.
In addition to producing filtered fizzy beverages, the apparatus may be used simplyto dispense filtered fresh water by by-passing operation of the carbonating mechanism. This may be achieved, for example, by using rotary control 9 only to fill the pressure chamber with filtered waterfrom the reservoir and slideable control 10 onlyto dispense the filtered water from the chambervia the spout 5.
The apparatus may also inciude a concentrate dispensing arrangement, wherein a predetermined quantity of a flavouring concentrate may be dispensed into the carbonated or fresh filtered water, before orduring dispensing ofthewater, thereby removing the necessity of mixing concentrate with the carbonated orfresh filtered water afterthewater has been dispensed.
