Abstract

A sacrificial sheet (1) is screwed or bolted directly on to the bottom of a boat (2) to provide substantially total bottom coverage and protection according to need in use. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Protective bottom for a boat This invention relates to a protective bottom for a boat to protect it from damage by rough ground.
Small boats are regularly run up on beaches and dragged along rough ground. Sometimes boats are provided with replaceable metal orwoodenstrips along the bottom to protect against damage ofthis kind. These strips are readily renewable.
They do not however provide protection for the whole of the bottom, and rocks, jagged pieces and rough slipways can damage the bottom ofthe boat where there is no protection.
According to the present invention there is provided a boat having over substantially all of its bottom a sacrificial sheet of material to protect substantially every part of its bottom from surface damage.
The sheet could be screwed in place; be of any suitable material, thickness and protective quality; and preferably be readily renewable.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows an underview of a boat with a sacrificial bottom beneath it showing how it may be attached.
Referringtothedrawing, asacrificial protective bottom 1 for boat 2 comprises a sheet of material the same size and shape as the complete bottom ofthe boat. It has or may have a slot in it for a centreboard to come through when sailing. Forvery good protection, the material ofthe protective bottom 1 could be a sheet of steel or heavy plywood. For lighter weight and less good protection the sheet could be of plywood of any type orthickness.
The protective bottom 1 is attached to the bottom ofthe boat 2 by countersunk screws or countersunk bolts with nuts passing into orthrough various strong sections of the boat itself- see for example the positions of the dots on the protective bottom which indicate holes four bolts or screws. The actual number and positions of the screws or bolts will be determined according to the design of the boat (and perhapsthe position of something solid to screw into); the weight ofthe bottom 1 itself; and the kind of abrasion that the particular use of the boat will cause.
The protective bottom 1 could be in more than one piece.
1. Aboathaving oversubstantiallyail ofits bottom a sacrificial sheet of material to protect substantially every part of its bottom from surface damage.
2. Aboat according to claim 1,wherein said sheet is in more than one piece.
3. Aboataccordingto claim 1 or2,whereinsaid sheet is screwed or bolted to the bottom ofthe boat.
4. A boat, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
