Abstract
In a washing process wherein the detergent and bleaching agents are separately dosed to the wash liquor by means of an automatic and sequential dosing programme, better detergency performance is achieved by separately adding an alkalibooster to the wash liquor, prior to the addition of the bleach system and after or together with the addition of detergent. Preferably the bleach system is added delayedly after the addition of the alkalibooster, and, if the bleach system comprises a peroxytype bleaching agent and a bleach precursor, the latter is added after the former has been added.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improved washing and bleaching process
The present invention relates to an improved washing and bleaching process for fabrics, based on the principle of automatic/sequential dosing of various ingredients to the wash liquor during the washing process.
Washing processes, whereby the various ingredients are automatically and sequentially dosed to the wash liquor have already been described in the prior art, e.g. US Pat. 4,188,807 and 4,110,075. By such automatic and sequential dosing, more efficient use can be made in a washing machine adapted for such automatic/sequential dosing, of the various ingredients of a washing and bleaching composition and the energy consumption can be reduced.
Other proposals include continuously monitoring alkali and detergency values and automatically adding alkali or detergent in response to the monitoring signal to the wash liquor (GB Pat.
1,439,602), or controlling and sequentially dosing of additives to the wash liquor (GB Pat.
1,423,502) or dispensing separate unit doses of detergent components to the wash liquor (US
Pat. 4,365,853) but these proposals do not refer to a washing process combining the automatic and sequential dosing of the ingredients.
We have now found, that the performance of the above washing processes, which operate according to the automatic and sequential dosing principles as described e.g. in the above US
Patents 4,188,807 and 4,110,075 can be significantly improved by using a separate alkalibooster to be added automatically at the beginning of the wash cycle, after or together with the addition of a detergent composition but before the addition of a bleach system.
By this addition of a separate alkalibooster the pH profile in the beginning of the wash cycle can be adjusted as a function of the time which, when subsequently a bleach system is added, results in a significantly better bleach delivery and performance. As alkalibooster any suitable alkaline material can be used, sodium hydroxide being a preferred material.
It has furthermore been found that if the detergent composition which is added before or together with the addition of the alkalibooster contains enzymes, it is of significant advantage to delay the dosing of the bleach system after the addition of the alkalibooster. Thus, if the main wash cycle is carried out at 40"C, the bleaching system should be delayedly added, sometime after the addition of the alkalibooster, e.g. 5 miutes thereafter; if the main wash cycle is carried out at 60"C the bleach system should be added after the wash liquor has reached a temperature of abt. 50"C, and for a 90"C main wash cycle the bleach system should be added when the wash liquor has reached a temperature of abt. 60"C.
If the bleach system is a low temperature bleach system, consisting of a peroxy type bleaching agent and a bleach precursor, the bleach precursor is added after the peroxy type bleaching agent has been added; this will usually be the case for the main wash cycles at 40 and 60"C; for the 90"C main wash cycle a bleach precursor need not be used. A typical example of a suitable bleaching agent is hydrogenperoxide, and a suitable bleach precursor is Nacetylcaprolactam.
The above process is particularly suitable if the various ingredients are used in a liquid, pumpable form, but of course with the aid of appropriate dosing devices other physical forms such as powders, granules, tablets, pastes etc. can also be used.
The invention will further be illustrated by way of Example.
Example
In an automatic washing machine of the type as described in the above-mentioned US Patent 4,188,807 washing experiments were carried out using 4 kg clean wash load + several types of artificial soil, using water of 10" German hardness.
First a heavy duty liquid detergent was dosed, then sodium hydroxide as alkalibooster, subsequently the bleach system (H202 or H202 + acetylcaprolactam) and finally in the rinse cycle a fabric softening composition. For comparison purpose a single dosing system using a conventional heavy duty detergent powder was also included in the washing experiments. The moment of addition of the bleach system was varied, as was the wash temperature, as is shown in the table below. The data represent detergency values expressed as the difference in % reflectancy measurements before and after washing. The amounts of the ingredients dosed in all experiments were identical, and the amont of detergent powder used in the comparison was equivalent to the amounts, used in the multidosage system. The following results were obtained:
Wash temp. time of dosing of: % detergency on artificial soil: "C H202 acetylcaprolactam AS-10 AS-12 WFK 10C EMPA EMPA
114 116 60 directly at start directly at start 34.0 36.0 30.0 38.0 13.0 60 after 5 minutes directly after 34.0 35.0 30.0 34.0 28.0
addition of H202 60 at 50"C directly after 35.5 36.0 30.0 38.0 35.0
addition of H202 90 at 60"C no addition at all 38.5 38.5 33.0 39.0 41.0 comparison 60 at the start 33.0 33.0 32.5 36.0 18.0 90 at the start 37.0 37.0 34.0 42.5 21.5
The improved detergency is particularly pronounced on the EMPA 116 type of soil, which is a blood containing soil. In comparison with the first test and with the comparison test, the process of the invention showed unexpected benefits when first the alkalibooster is added, and subsequently after an interval the bleach system is added.
