Abstract

To make it easier to extract the content and to use it as a presentation and sales container, a folding carton is equipped, in the region of a front wall (12), with an opening flap (19) which is delimited by perforation lines (21,22) and which can be brought into an inclined opening position and can be fixed in this by means of hinge tabs (25) with stop bosses (26). The extraction of the content can be made even easier if the folding carton is inclined so as to descend in the direction of the extraction orifice (28). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Folding carton with a pivotal opening flap The invention relates to a folding carton with bottom, top, side, front and rear walls and with an opening flap which, in the region of the front wall, is movable into an opening position as a result of pivoting about a hinge edge formed with the bottom wall, and which can be fixed in this opening position by means of lateral hinge tabs with a projecting stop boss.
Various designs of folding cartons made of cardboard, corrugated cardboard, etc., and having a pivotable opening flap are known.
When the opening flap is in the opening position, the pack content can be extracted, and then the folding carton can be closed again. In one of these known folding cartons (German Utility Model 78.37,154), the front wall consists of two separate parts. The lower part forms the pivotable opening flap which, in the closing position, slightly overlaps the upper part of the front wall. In the opening position, the opening flap is directed approximately horizontally, that is to say in the plane of the bottom wall, as a result of an appropriate arrangement of stop bosses on the hinge tabs.
The blank for this folding carton is designed so that a top wall with carrying handles is formed from a separate blank and has to be joined to the side walls bf the folding carton.
The object on which the invention is based is to develop further a folding carton of the type mentioned in the introduction, in such a way that the folding carton intended for specific packaged articles is at the same time also suitable as a presentation and sales container (display), but can nevertheless be produced economically, in particular in a way which saves material.
To achieve this object, the folding carton according to the invention is characterized in that the opening flap is designed as part of the front wall and is delimited relative to a fixed front-wall top part by means of punchings, perforations or the like.
Because the front wall of the folding carton is designed according to the invention, it is possible to produce this from a simple material-saving one-piece blank which includes all the carton walls. To open the folding carton, a gripping tab in the region of the transversely directed perforation lines is grasped and the opening flap is separated from the front-wall top part in the region of the perforation lines.
The opening flap can now be pivoted into an opening position. In this, the opening flap is directed at an angle to the bottom wall, that is to say obliquely, as a result of an appropriate arrangement of the stop bosses which determine the opening position. Thus, in the opening position, the opening flap prevents the packaged articles from sliding out or rolling out. The blank for forming the complete folding carton is approximately rectangular. A rear wall, bottom wall, front wall and top wall are arranged in succession in the longitudinal direction. Approximately rectangular folding tabs for forming the side walls extend laterally. The (longer) folding tabs of the bottom wall and top wall are on the outside, whilst the folding tabs of the rear wall and front wall, the latter in the region of the frontwall top part, are arranged on the inside.
According to a further feature of the invention, the folding carton, when functioning as a display unit, is brought into an inclined position by means of supporting elements located on the side of the bottom wall distant from the opening flap. According to the invention, the supporting elements are formed from supporting tabs which, as punched parts, are erected from the bottom wall and/or rear wall.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is explained in detail below with reference to the drawings.
In these: Figure 1 shows a folding carton in perspective, in the closing or initial position, Figure 2 shows the folding carton according to Fig. 1 in the opened position, Figure 3 shows a side view, on an enlarged scale, of the folding carton according to Fig.
2, Figure 4 shows a blank for the folding carton in the spread-out position.
The folding carton illustrated is cuboid, with a rear wall 10, a bottom wall 11, a front wall 12 and a top wall 13. Side walls 14 are formed from folding tabs 15, 16, 17 and 18 which partially overlap one another.
In the lower part region, the front wall 12 is designed as an opening flap 19. This is delimited relative to the upper part of the front wall 12, in particular a fixed front-wall top part 20, by transversely directed sloping perforation lines 21, 22. The perforation lines 21, 22 pointed towards one another in a roof-like manner merge into a punched gripping tab 23 in the centre of the front wall 12.
To open the folding carton, the gripping tab 23 is grasped and pulled off from the front wall 12. The perforation lines 21, 22 are thereby severed. The opening flap 19 extending over the entire width of the folding carton is freed from the front-wall top part 20. At the same time, the opening flap 19 is pivoted about a hinge edge 24 which at the same time is a folding edge between the bottom wall 11 and the front wall 12.
Hinge tabs 25 are arranged laterally on the opening flap 19 and, by being folded in an appropriate way, lie in the plane of the side walls 14 on the inside of these. When the opening flap 19 is pivoted, the hinge tabs 25 shaped in the form of an arc of a circle at the free edge are consequently pulled out of the folding carton, until an upward-projecting stop boss 26, attached in each case to the end distant from the opening flap 19, comes up against the inside of the front-wall top part 20 and thereby limits the opening movement of the opening flap 19. As is evident especially from Fig. 3, the lateral hinge tabs 25 are so limited or the stop boss 26 is so arranged that the opening flap 19 is stopped in an inclined position, that is to say directed at an angle to the bottom wall 11.Because of this inclined end position of the opening flap 19, articles, especially cylindrical (biscuit) packs 27, are prevented from rolling out of an extraction orifice 28 exposed by the opening flap 19 and extending over the entire width of the folding carton in the lower region of the front wall 12.
To make it easier to extract the contents from the folding carton, the latter can be brought into an inclined position (Fig. 3). For this purpose, supporting elements are arranged on the side distant from the extraction orifice 28 under the bottom wall 11, so that the latter is inclined in the direction of the extraction orifice 28. In the present exemplary embodiment, the supporting elements are formed from the folding carton itself. Prepunched supporting flaps 29 can be pressed out of the bottom wall 11 and rear wall 10.
The arrangement is such that a longer supporting leg 30 is marked in the region of the bottom wall 11 and a further supporting leg 31, arranged at right angles to the former, is marked in the region of the rear wall 10. The longer supporting leg 30 remains connected to the bottom wall 11 via a folding line 32 running in the bottom wall 11. In the angular position, the supporting flap 29, which is otherwise pressed out of the rear wall and bottom wall, is erected, in such a way that the two supporting legs 30 and 31 extend underneath the bottom wall 11 in the upright position and thus support the latter. The supporting leg 30 is of trapezoidal shape, that is to say with an overall height which decreases in the direction of the extraction orifice 28.
A V-shaped trough, in which the particular article to be extracted rests, is formed in the region of the hinge edge 24 as a result of the inclined position of the bottom wall 11, on the one hand, and of the opening flap 19, on the other hand.
The preferred embodiment of an integral, one-piece, essentially rectangular blank for the complete folding carton is shown in Fig. 4.
The rear wall 10, bottom wall 11, front wall 12 and top wall 13 are successively delimited in the longitudinal direction of the blank by means of folding lines directed longitudinally and traversely. The folding tabs 15 to 18 arranged on both sides of the above-mentioned blank parts are predominantly likewise of approximately rectangular shape. In the region of the front wall 12, the folding tab 17 is assigned to the front-wall top part 20. The hinge tabs 28 are provided at the sides of the opening flap 19 here. The bottom wall 11 and top wall 13 are to be connected to one another by means of an edge strip 33. The side walls 14 are formed by the horizontally directed folding tabs 16 and 18 which come together, leaving a gap. On the inside, these are partially covered by the folding tabs 15 and 17 extending vertically.
