Abstract
A device for mounting a label, e.g. a vehicle licence disc 3, on a window, e.g. on the inside of a vehicle windscreen, is a sheet 1, for example of transparent flexible plastics material, having a first marginal portion 5 treated, e.g. coated, to cause it to adhere to a window and defining an untreated area 7, 10 which, when the device is adhered to the window, forms a pocket into which a label may be inserted. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Mounting a label on a window
It is frequently necessary to mount a label on a window so that the label is safely retained against loss and/or protected against damage and so that information on the label may be seen without dismounting it, either through the window or from the side of the window on which it is mounted, or both. By a label we mean a small piece of paper, card, plastics film of the like carrying visible information on one or both sides. Examples are price tickets, vehicle parking and security passes, club badges, vehicle licence discs, labels carrying sales information and tourist souvenir labels.
By a window we mean a glass or other substantially rigid transparent sheet element in a building, a vehicle, a container or other structure.
Many devices have been proposed and are in use for mounting a label on a window, but none known to the Applicants provides for immediate removal and replacement of the label without either dismounting the device from the window or disassembling the device.
Known devices which have to be dismounted from the window in order to give access to the label are often difficult or impossible to remount.
According to this invention, a device for mounting a label on a window comprises a sheet of material having a first marginal portion or portions treated to cause adhesion to a window and defining an area, including a second marginal portion, which is not so treated.
In use, the sheet is applied to the window so that the first marginal portion or portions adhere to it. The area defined by the first marginal portion or portions then forms with the window surface a pocket into which at least a part of a label may be inserted between the window surface and the second marginal portion. Information on the side of the label adjacent to the window can be seen through the window and, if the sheet is transparent or translucent, information on the opposite surface of the label may be seen through the sheet.
The first marginal portion or portions may be coated with an adhesive or otherwise treated to cause adhesion to a window, for example by electrostatic force. To avoid unintentional adhesion to adjacent objects prior to use, the first marginal portion or portions may be covered by protective release material which can be removed immediately before use.
Preferably the first marginal portion is continuous around the major part of the boundary of the area which is to form the pocket when the device is in use. The area will, of course, be of suitable size and shape to receive a sufficient part of the label to retain it in position against the window as desired. If the label is to be removed from the pocket frequently it is desirable that a part of it should project from the pocket so that it can easily be gripped with the fingers, and in this case the dimension of the pocket from the second marginal portion should be somewhat less than the corresponding dimension of the label.
For more secure mounting, or when the label is unlikely to be removed once mounted, the area will have all dimensions greater than the corresponding dimensions of the label, which can then be inserted wholly into the pocket when the device is in use.
The sheet of material may be rigid, but is preferably flexible. It is flexible if the window on which a label is to be mounted is other than flat, such as a curved windscreen of a vehicle. Preferably the sheet is of flexible plastics film or sheet material.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example by the accompanying drawing, which is an elevation of a device for mounting a British vehicle licence disc (which is a circular disc of paper) on the inside surface of a vehicle windscreen, showing the disc in the position it will occupy when the device is in use.
The device comprises a-rectangular sheet of transparent flexible plastics sheet material 1 having a major dimension 2 which is greater than the diameter of the licence disc 3 and a minor dimension 4 somewhat less than that diameter. A first marginal portion 5 of the sheet 1, extending from one end of the major edge 6 along the other three edges to the other end of the edge 6, is coated with a tacky adhesive. This marginal portion 5 defines a central area 7 of the sheet on which there is no adhesive, having a boundary with a semi-circular portion 8 on a diameter parallel to the edge 6, slightly greater than the diameter of the disc 3, merging into two tangen tial straight portions perpendicular to the edge 6. Prior to use, the sheet 1 is covered by a release paper (not shown) of similar dimensions adhered to and protecting the tacky first marginal portion 5.
In use, the release paper is removed and the sheet 1 is is applied to the inner surface of a vehicle winscreen in the position in which the licence disc 3 is to be mounted and with the major edge 6 uppermost. The first marginal portion 5 is pressed against the windscreen so that the tacky adhesive adheres to it. The central area 7 of the sheet, including a second marginal portion 10 along the major edge 6, does not adhere to the windscreen and forms a pocket into which the disc 3 can be inserted between the second marginal portion and the windscreen surface. A part 11 of the disc projects above the edge 6 of the sheet 1 so that it can be removed easily without dismounting the device from the wind screen.
Claims (5)
