Abstract
A joint arrangement is provided between a first member 10 having a hole 12 formed through its width and a second member 16 having an end portion 14 that can be passed through the hole. A recess 18 is formed in an outer surface of the end portion of the second member, the recess being capable of receiving the width of the first member, and a retaining member 20 is provided which, when the first member is engaged fully within the recess, fits snugly between the second member and a wall of the hole that is opposite to the hole wall engaged within the recess. The retaining member preferably has a tongue 22 with a tapering end 24, and is configured to be complementary to the end portion of the second member. The invention may be used e.g. in a wooden table or in articles of equivalent material. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Joint arrangement for articles, e.g. tables, of wood or equivalent material
The invention relates to a joint arrangement for use in articles of wood or equivalent material.
It is an aim of the invention to provide a joint arrangement which enables an article to be assembled without the use of screws, nails, bolts, rivets or adhesive: The invention is particularly described in relation to a wooden table, but is not limited thereto.
According to the invention, a joint arrangement is provided between a first member having a hole therein and a second member having an end portion of a size and shape that can be passed through the hole, the joint arrangement being characterised in that there is a recess in an outer surface of the end portion of the second member, the recess being capable of receiving the width of the first member, and in that a third member herein called a retaining member is provided which, when the first member is engaged fully within the recess, fits snugly between the second member and a wall of the hole that is opposite to that engaged by a wall at the base of the recess.
The retaining member preferably has a tongue with a tapering end. The retaining member is preferably configured to be complementary to the end portion of the second member.
Referring to the drawings filed herewith, Fig.
1 shows a first member 10 having a hole 12 through which can extend an end portion 14 of a second member 16 (Fig. 2). The latter has a recess 18. A third member 20 has a tongue 22 which is tapered or narrowed at one end 24, that is, the end which is inserted into the hole 12 to securely hold the second member therein. The assembled condition is shown in Fig. 3. The vertical height (distance c) of the hole 12 is chosen to be substantially equal to the sum of the height of the tongue 22 (distance a) and the width (distance b) at the necked portion of the end portion of the second member 16.
In use, the end portion 14 of the second member is inserted through the hole 12 until the surface 26, Fig. 2, butts up against the right hand surface of first member 10. Then the second member is moved down so that an edge part of first member 10 at the lower end of the hole extends into the recess 18.
Then the third member 20 is inserted (in a rightwards direction as seen in the Figures) so that its tongue 22 fills the remainder of the hole 12 and holds the parts together. The angled surface 23 and its counterpart 25 help to prevent separation of the first and second members.
A table top 28 or other desired part can then be attached in any convenient manner to the structure formed by the first, second and third members, see for example Figs. 4-6.
One advantageous feature of a preferred embodiment of the invention is that two parallel second members may have projecting wing portions 30 (Fig. 4) which engage in a dovetail manner with groove-defining blocks 32 on an underside of the table surface 28.
The invention is based on the concept of locking a recessed longitudinal "second" member within a suitably-shaped hole in a first member by the use of a retaining member.
1. A joint arrangement in which a first member is attached to a second member by the use of a third member which causes the first and second members to be mutually interlocked so that they cannot be separated without the removal of the third member.
2. An arrangement according to claim 1 in which the second member can be inserted through a hole in the first member, then moved laterally of the direction of insertion into a position in which the first and second members are relativey immovabe in the x and y directions, and are then locked against movement in the z direction by the insertion of the third member.
3. A joint arrangement including a first member having a hole therein and a second member having an end portion of a size and shape that can be passed through the hole, the joint arrangement being characterised in that there is a recess in an outer surface of the end portion of the second member, the recess being capable of receiving the width of the first member, and in that a third member herein called a retaining member is provided which, when the first member is engaged fully within the recess, fits snugly between the second member and a wall of the hole that is opposite to that engaged by a wall at the base of the recess.
4. An arrangement according to claim 2 in which the retaining member has a tongue with a tapering end, and configured to be complementary to the end portion of the second member.
5. An arrangement according to any preceding claim in which the first, second and third members are of wood.
6. An arrangement substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
7. Any novel combination or sub-combination disclosed and/or illustrated herein.

Claims (7)
