Abstract

Compulsory differential driving. - Hoisting apparatus movable along rails is provided with means for driving the inner and outer wheels at different speeds at curved portions of the track. The wheels 4, 5, driven from a motor 6. are normally connected by gearing and a clutch 23 so as to rotate together, but on approaching a curve, a guide rail 55 or the equivalent throws over a clutch lever 24, so that the wheel 4 is driven through change-speed gear 25 - - 28. On approaching the next straight portion of the track, the clutch lever is moved back to the normal position. A safety device for cutting off the current if the guide rail fails to throw over the clutch lever comprises a slider 34 connected with the clutch lever, having a projection 35 which is in the path of one of two switches 40, 41 according to the position of the clutch lever. The switch arms 40, 41 are pivoted so as to move freely in one direction and to operate the switches when moved in the reverse direction. The arrangement is such that when the crane &c. is moving from a straight to a curved portion of the track, if the clutch lever is in the correct position, the member 35 engages the switch arm 41 without operating the switch, but if the lever is in the wrong position, the member 35 engages the arm 40 and cuts off the current. With the crane &c. travelling in the opposite direction, the correct position of the clutch lever is such that the member 35 again provides the safety control. The switches may be mounted on the slider 34 upon the travelling structure and co-operate with strikers adjacent to the track at 36, 37.
