Abstract
A seat structure consists of two elongate members 1, 7, the first of which has a slot 3 therethrough and the second of which is of T-shape configuration. Part 9 of the T-shaped member is passed through the slot 3 to form a seat where a portion 10 of the second member constitutes a seat and a portion 1B of the first member constitutes a backrest. Co-operating means 5 and 11 enable the two members to be temporarily secured together in face-to- face relation for carrying purposes. A hand hold 13 may be provided in the member 1. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A seat structure
This invention relates to a seat structure which comprises two members which can be readily assembled and disassembled. The two members can also be temporarily secured together in a manner which permits the two members to be readiiy portable.
According to the present invention, a seat structure comprises an elongate first member having a slot therethrough extending at right angles to the length of the member, the member having a first portion on one side of the slot and a second portion on the other side of the slot; and a T-shaped second member having a first portion of a width slightly less than the width of the slot and a second portion of greater width than the width of the slot; the arrangement being such that, when the first portion of the T-shaped member is passed through the slot in the first member, the second portion of the T-shaped member abuts against the first member to form a structure with the second portion of the second member constituting a seat and the second portion of the first member constituting a backrest.
Preferably, on one side of the second portion of the second member, there is an elongate tongue and, on the second portion of the first member, there is an elongate groove arranged to receive the tongue, thereby enabling the two members to be temporarily secured together by sliding the tongue into the groove.
It is envisaged that the members will be carried by the user in their temporarily secured condition to the site where the chair structure is to be assembled and then the two members are separated by withdrawing the tongue from the groove. The first portion of the second member is then passed through the slot in the first member until the second portion of the second member abuts against the first member, thereby preventing the second member from passing further through the slot. The first portion of the first member and the first portion of the second member then constitute supports for the structure while the second portion of the second member and the second portion of the first member constitute the seat and the backrest, respectively.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, it will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa rear view of a first member;
Figure 2 is a side view of the first member;
Figure 3 is an end view of the first member;
Figure 4 is a rear view of the second member;
Figure 5 is a side view of the second member;
Figure 6 is an end view of the second member; and
Figure 7 is a side view of the assembled seat structure.
Referring to Figures 1,2 and 3, a first member 1 is of elongate form and has a slot 3 extending through it at right angles to the length of the member. The slot serves to divide the member into a first axial portion 1A and a larger second axial portion 1 B. At the outer end of the second portion an axially extending T-shaped slot 5 is formed and this slot extends to the rear side of the first member.
Referring to Figures 4, 5 and 6, a second elongate member 7 is of T-shape with a first axial portion 9 which is of a width slightly less than the width of the slot 3 and a second axial portion 10 which is wider than the portion 9. On the rear side of the portion 10 there is an elongate axially extending tongue 11.
To carry the two members, it is desirable for the tongue 11 on the second member 7 to be slid into the slot 5 on the first member 1 so that the two members lie face-to-face and are temporarily secured together. A slot 13 in the first member serves as a hand hold by which the user can carry the two members. On arrival at a site where the seat structure is to be used, the user slides the second member7 axially with respect to the member 1 to disengage the tongue from the slot. The second member 7 is then assembled to the first member 1 by passing the first portion 9 of the second member through the slot 3 in the first member. The member passes through the slot until the second portion 10 engages against the front face of the first member.
The structure can then be used as a seat with the second portion of the second member constituting the seat and the second portion of the first member constituting a backrest. The assembled seat is shown in Figure 7.
The slot 3 is inclined, conveniently by about 8 , to the faces of the first member and, when the two members are assembled, the weight of the members forces the two members apart so that the edges of the slot 3 bear against the surfaces of the second member 7 to hold the seat in the assembled position. When a user sits on the structure, the weight of the user further serves to hold the two members together.
The members may be of wood but, alternatively, they may be of plastics material, in which case metal inserts may be required for strengthening purposes.
In the arrangement shown, the tongue 11 and the groove 5 are of T-shape cross-section, but other cross-sections, such as V-shape, may be used.
1. A seat structure comprising an elongate first member having a slot extending therethrough between opposite faces, the slot aperture in each face being at right angles to the length of the member, the member having a first portion on one side of the slot and a second portion on the other side of the slot; and a T-shaped second member having a first portion of a width slightly less than the width of the slot and a second portion of greater width than the width of the slot; the arrangement being such that, when the first portion of the Tshaped member is passed through the slot in the first member, the second portion of the T-shaped member abuts against a face of the first member to form a structure with the second portion of the second member constituting a seat and the second portion of the first member constituting a backrest, and co-operating means on the two members for
