Abstract
A clip for a bottom-opening bag has two limbs 10, 12 of synthetic plastics material joined by an integral plastics hinge 14, one unit 10 being curved and having a projecting portion 16 disposed longitudinally of the limb and the other limb having an elongate recess 18 therein extending longitudinally of the other unit and over a length greater than that of the projection, additionally a snap-fastener means 22, 24 is located at the ends opposite to the hinge for holding those ends together. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Clipforbottom-opening bag This invention relates to a clip for a bottom-opening bag, e.g. a urostomy bag ora urine drainage bag of any kind.
One clip forthis purpose is disclosed in British
Patent Specification No. 1 213 669. It is an aim of the present invention to provide an improved clip.
According to the invention, a clip for a bottomopening bag has two limbs of synthetic plastics material joined by an integral plastics hinge, one unit being curved and having a projecting portion disposed longitudinally of the limb and the other limb having an elongate recess therein extending Iongitu- dinallyofthe otherunitand overa length greaterthan thatofthe projection, there being snap-fastener means atthe ends opposite to the hinge for holding those ends together.
Preferablythe snap fastener means are formed by a pair of resilient tines on one limb which can be squeezed together to pass between a pair of detents located on the other limb.
Further features of the invention will appearfrom the following illustrative description of one embodi ment thereof, given with reference to:- Figure 1 which is a front elevation of one example of clip according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is a plan view ofthe clip shown in Figure 1.
The illustrative clip for a bottom-opening bag has two limbs 10, 12 of synthetic plastics material joined byan integral plastics hinge 14, one limb 10 being curved and having a projecting portion 16 disposed longitudinallythereof. The other limb 12 is straight and has an elongate recess 18 therein, the hole 18 extending over a length greaterthan that of the projection 16. The end ofthe limb 12 remote from the hinge 14, and the end ofthe limb 10 remotefromthe hinge 14 are provided with snap fastener means for holding these ends together.
As illustrated, the snap fastener means are formed bya pairof resilienttines 20 which are partofthe limb 12, and each of which has an upstanding lug 22. The co-operating part of the snap fastener means is provided by a pair of catches or detents 24, extending upwardly from and one on each side of the free end of the limb 10. Each of these catches 24 has an inwardly extending portion 26. In operation, the clip is folded shutto grip or clamp the end of a bottom opening bag, and the two tines 20 are pressed together by finger pressure, passed between the catches 24, and allowed to spring outwardly due to their own resilience when the portions 26 ovelie the tines 20, so holding the clip closed.During the closing operation, the limb 12 bends gradually into a curve to correspond to the curve ofthe limb 10, and the point of clamping or nip between the two limbs effectively moves along their lengths from the hinge ends to the free ends. This feature, which is preferred but not essential to the invention, results in reliable clamping ofa bag outlet such that liquid escape is precluded under normal working conditions.
It is an advantage ofthe present invention as particularly disclosed herein thatthe clip can be
readily opened and closed with one hand.
As seen in cross section, the projection 16 is
preferably of rectangular shape. The recess 18 as seen
in plan is substantially rectangular, and its width is up to 25% greaterthan the width of the projection 16. The
depth of the recess 18 is greaterthan the height of the projection 16.
Among the advantages ofthe clip disclosed herein is that it is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and performs reliably over a considerable period without deterioration. Moreover, thereare no loose parts to get lost. While the limb 12 is preferably straight, other configurations may be employed.
Claims (4)
1. Aclipfora bottom-opening bag having two limbs of synthetic plastics material joined by an integral plastics hinge, one limb being curved and having a projection portion disposed longitudinally of the limb and the other limb having an elongate recess therein extending longitudinally of the other unit and over a length greater than that of the projection, there being snap-fastener means at the ends opposite to the hinge for holding those ends together.
2. Aclip according to claim 1 in which the snap fastener means are formed by a pair of resilient tines on one limb which can be squeezed together to pass between a pair of detents located on the other limb.
3. A clip substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
4. Any novel combination or sub-combination disclosed and/or illustrated herein.
