Further an external surrounding element 25 embraces and contains the carrier-support and is positioned over the three external flat portions. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Carrier-support for a mobile bar in linear slide and transfer units of operation-performing machines This invention relates to a carrier-supportfora mobile bar in linearslide andtransferunitsof operation-performing machines. For supporting mobile bars of the profiled continuous type such as the so-called shuttle bars in slide and transfer units of operation-performing machines, it is known to use plates which are essentially parallel to them and to which rolling members such as rollers or bearings are fixed, forexample above and belowthebarinan essentially vertical plane.
Supports formed in this manner comprise brackets connected to a base and carrying rolling members, which suffer from the problem of correct assembly in the proper sequence with respect to the continuous mobile bar.
In addition, said series of brackets and bases must be perfectly aligned in order to form a support which does not create friction problems or generate undesirable collateral forces which affect the correct operation of the machine and lead to rapid wear of certain of its components.
It has also been noted that although the known types of support maintain the mobile bar in a reasonably sound state, they do not adequately protect it continuously when used on operation-performing machine tools in which welding or other processes and procedures which can damage the bar surface are carried out. An object of the present invention is to provide a carrier-supportfora continuous mobile barwhich is very simple to position, is ofvery accurate alignment with the mobile bar, and is particularly strong.
Afurther object is to enable itto be more easily positioned relative to any structural element of the machine, even on elements which are themselves mobile and translatable in horizontal orvertical planes.
Afurther object is to enable said support to adequately protect the mobile bar.
These objects are attained according to the present invention by a carrier-supportfor a mobile bar in linearslide and transfer units of operation-performing machines, characterised by consisting of an extruded sectionn of light alloy material having essentially a C-shaped cross-section composed externally of three flat portions one normal to the other.
The structural and operational characteristics and advantages of a carrier-support for a mobile bar in an operation-performing machine will be more apparentfromthe detailed description given hereinafter by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carrier-support with bar according to the present invention; Figure2 is an internal frontview of the carrier-support of Figure 1 alone; and Figure 3 is a section on the line Ill-Ill of Figure 2, with the rolling members and mobile bar mounted.
With reference to the drawings, a carrier-support, indicated overall by 1 1,form mobile bar 12, for example a so-called shuttle bar, is used in a linear slide and transfer unit of an operation-performing machine.
The carrier-support 11 can be obtained by continuously extruding a hardened and tempered light alloy material to any desired length to form a profile the cross-section of which is essentially of C-shape.
On its external surface, the C-shaped cross-section comprises three flat portions 13,14 and 15 disposed one normal to the other, in said three flat portions, namely upper 13, lateral 14 and lower 15, there being provided seats 16 with relative bores 17 which enable the carrier-support 11 to be positioned with respect to further base support elements or bars (not shown). Within the C-shaped cross-section, the profile is composed of a series of portions of a broken line 18 which join up to identify almost a proper continuous surface.
Within both the upper flat portion 13 and the lower flat portion 15 there are provided depressed zones 19 parallel to the cross-section, in which lubricating or greasing means 20 are positioned.
In correspondence with the corners of the carrier-support 11 and at its free ends there are provided further inclined bores 21 and 22 on the same base, their axes extending in mutually perpendicular directions, and in which pivots 23 are disposed for rotatably supporting rolling members 24 such as bearings or rollers. The further bores 22 provided in correspondence with the edges ofthe carrier-support 11 extend as far as the lateral flat portion 14to allowthe positioning and fixing of rolling members 24 or rather of their support pivots 23.
The bores 21 and 22 are disposed in a different planes parallel to the cross-section of the carrier-support 11,so that opposing rolling members 24 disposed in the same plane operate on the surface of the mobile bar 12.
In orderto provide greater rigidity to the carrier-support 11, orto carrier-support portions disposed aligned with each other a certain distance apart, an outer surrounding element 25 formed by extrusion, rolling or bending is provided, which embraces and contains the carrier-support 11 in a complementary manner (Figure 1) and can be fixed so that it faces the external environment. A carrier-support formed in accordance with the present invention is particularly advantageous in systems in which the mobile bar 12 not only undergoes longitudinal translational movement but must also be able to be raised or lowered vertically, so as not only to be able to implement transfer along the line but also to feed workpiecesfor subjection to the operating elements of the individual stations, and then remove them.
It should be noted that the carrier-support is of very small overall size and surrounds the mobile bar to the extent of constituting a valid three-side protection forthe bar. It should be noted that a carrier-support with a profile according to the present invention offers an effective moment of inertia and structural strength against both bending and torsional stresses.
Advantageously, a carrier-support according to the present invention can be provided in the form of aligned portions of varying lengths, each provided with rolling guide members to enable the mobile bar to slide, and spaced apart at distances determined at the design stage in accordance with the stresses involved, a nd fixed to base elements of the individual transfer units.
Full implementation ofthe concept of a continuous support element is attained by forming a continuous carrier-support by mechanically joining together a number of side-by-side portions using joint cover plates (notshown).
However, the same result can be obtained equally validly byfixing at a predetermined distance apart a series of portions of limited length provided with guide bearings within a continuous auxiliary section formed of light alloy or steel and obtained by rolling, extruding or cold-bending. Such a section must mate with the profile of the carrier-support portions to provide the necessary moment of inertia and allow easy fixing to the carrier-support portions.
