Abstract

An artist's portfolio comprises two cover sheets (1 and 2) which are joined to spine (3) whereby they may open and close book-wise. The spine (3) carries on its inside surface a series of snap fastening rings (8) which serve to secure artwork or clear plastics folders (9) into which artwork may be inserted. A support board (10) is secured along the hinge line (4) and a strap (11) attaches one edge of the support board to the edge of the outer cover (1). By this construction the support board is conveniently enclosed within the folder but by opening up the outer boards the support board may be extended to thereby form an easel to facilitate display of artwork contained in the folders (9). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Artist's portfolio This invention relates to an artist's portfolio which, as is known, comprises two stiff cover members, for example of cardboard material covered by an adhered PVC plastics layer and which are hinged together by a spine so as to open and close book fashion. The spine may include a series of rings or other fixture members which secure carrier sheets adapted to receive photographs orthe like artwork.
Usuallythe contents of the portfolio are viewed by turning the sheets therein bookfashion but with portfolios of a larger size it is of advantage to be able to view any particular artworkfrom a distance.
This invention seeks to provide an improved construction of artist's portfolio having a self supporting means enabling the material therein to be presented more effectively.
According to this invention there is provided an artist's portfolio comprising front and back cover sheets hinged to open book fashion along opposed sides of a spine member carrying means such as snap rings orthe like to secure artwork to be displayed, the portfolio further including a support board memberconected by hinge means to one or other sides of the spine and having a free side connected by strap means to a free side of an adjacent cover.
By this construction the portfolio may be opened with one cover sheet folded back into proximity with the other cover sheet and the support board can then be extended to define an easel-like structure with the board being retained atan angle by means ofthe strap. Thus, artwork may be turned over on the easel-like structure so as to be viewable from a distance.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the portfolio further includes zip fastening means extending along the free edges so as to join the cover members when the pofolio is not in use, thus protecting the contents.
In a preferred construction the support board is of a rigid material such as cardboard which is enclosed within a plastics, e.g. PVC, covering one end ofwhich is creased in a creasing machineto form the hinge line between the spine and one of the covers. This enables the construction to be realised in a low cost manner.
Preferably the support board and cover boards comprise a rigid material such as cardboard to each side of which is adhered a plastics layer sealed around all four sides, thereby totally enclosing the board. This is in contrast to known constructions of portfolio where a pocket is provided in a PVC cover into which cardboard is inserted and thereafter high frequency welded.
Two embodiments according to this invention are shown by way of examples only in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a perpective view of a first embodiment of portfolio closed, Figure2 shows the portfolio open, Figure 3 shows the support board, Figure4showsthe portfolio in use, Figure 5shows a side view of a second embodiment of portfolio, Figure 6shows the second embodiment open, Figure 7showsthe support board ofthesecond embodiment, and Figure 8shows the second embodiment in use.
Referring initiallyto Figures 1 to4ofthe accompanying drawings, an artist's portfolio comprises two cover sheets 1 and which are joined to spine 3 whereby they may open and close book-wise. The cover sheets 1 and 2 and spine 3 comprises a rigid material such as cardboard which is sandwiched between sheets of PVC plastics material either adhered thereto or which are high frequency welded around the peripheral edges and also along the junctures between each of the sheets 1 and 2 and spine 3, thereby forming hinges 4 and 5.
The edges of the portfolio may include a plastics reinforced binding 6 which is stitched to the PVC and board.
The spine 3 carries on its inside surface a series of snap fastening rings 8 which serve to secure artwork or clear plastics folders 9 into which art work may be inserted. A support board 10 is secured along the hinge line 4 by high frequency welding at the same time asthe hinges areformed, forexample, and a strap 11 attaches one edge ofthe support board to the edge ofthe outer cover 1. By this construction the support board is conveniently enclosed within the folder but by opening up the outer boards as shown in Figure 4 the support board may be extended to thereby form an easel to facilitate display of artwork contained in the folders 9.
Figures 5to 8 show a second em bodimentwhich in substance is the same as that already described. In this construction, however, the three free edges of the outer covers of the portfolio are each secured by a zip means 12 which serves to protect the contents within the portfolio when closed. The arrangement of the support board 10 with strap 11 is similar and the portfolio may be opened up into the form of an easei for convenience of display ofartwork.
