Description

SPECIFICATION Cutting tools This invention relates to cutting tools adapted for use with the collets disclosed in our Patent Applicaaion No. 8401680 filed 23rd January 1984 (Publication No. 2 138 329).
In our aforesaid Patent Application there is disclosed a collet comprising tool securement devices and/or formations adapted to allow securement within the collet of at least a selected two of cutting tools having "Clare", screw-threaded, "Weldon" or "wistle notch" shanks; a collet comprising a screw-threaded plug for engagement within the narrower end of the collet and elongatedly-slotted to accept and securely receive a "Clare" shanked cutting tool and an internally screw-threaded ring adapted to be non-rotatably located in the collet in-board of the plug to accept and securely receive a screw-threaded shanked cutting tool; a collet comprising at its narrower end an opening in which is non-rotatably received one of a plurality of adapter plates each specific to a cutting tool with a "Clare" latching shanked cutting tool or a screw-threaded shanked cutting tool, and a locking device for securing the selected adapter plate in position; a collet adapted to accept either a cutting tool with a "Weldon" shank or a cutting tool with a "wistle notch" shank, the collet wall being formed with a radial screw-threaded hole and angularly-spaced therefrom an inclined screwthreaded hole, each for receiving an Allen screw respectively to secure the "Weldon" shanked cutting tool and the "wistle notch" shanked cutting tool within the collet; and finally, a collet comprising at its narrower end an elongate latching slot adapted to accept and securely receive a "Clare" shanked cutting tool and having in its wall a radial and/or inclined screw-threaded hole for receiving an Ailen screw respectively to permit the collet to accept and securely receive a "Weldon" shanked cutting tool and/or a "wistle notch" shanked cutting tool.
It is an object of the present invention to provide cutting tools adapted for use with the collets of our aforesaid Patent Application.
According to the present invention there is provided a cutting tool comprising a cylindrical shank having at at least one end a cutting formation and at its other end a second cutting formation or a "Clare'' latching formation or a screw-threaded formation and, between said ends, a "Weldon" notch and/or a "wistIe" notch.
For the sake of clarity, each of these shanks is briefly described.
A "Clare" (latch) shank at one end has op positely-handed angled faces to permit a bay onet type connection.
A screw-threaded shank as will be self-evi dent, is externally screw-threaded at one end.
A "Weldon" shank is radially notched with a parallel face to receive a retaining screw or bolt.
A "wistle notch" shank is radially notched with a 20 angled face for receiving a retaining screw or bolt.
Embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a multi-grip collet according to our aforesaid Patent Application showing two alternative cutting tool end securing formations according to the invention; Figure 2 is a section on line Il-Il of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of an alternative construction of multi-grip collet according to our aforesaid Patent Application showing the same two alternative cutting tool end securing formations; Figure 4 is a part-sectional elevation of a chuck arrangement according to the invention; Figure 5 is a part-sectional view of a collet/ collet adapter and tool combination according to the invention; and Figures 6 to 8 are respectively diagrammatic view of a "Clare" shank, a "Weldon" shank and a ,'wistle notch" shank, the two latter being for double-ended cutting tools.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the collet 10 according to our aforesaid Patent Application is of externally tapered configuration with a cylindrical bore 11. It is axially split as indicated at 12 as is customary and at its larger end is externally screw-threaded as indicated at 13 to receive a differential locking nut (not shown). Such a nut is however, shown in Fig. 4 which also shows a chuck within which the various collets disclosed in our aforesaid Patent Application can be mounted.
The smaller diameter end of the collet is internally screw-threaded as indicated at 14.
Diameter 14 is larger than diameter 11 and inboard of screw-thread 14 the internal diameter indicated at 15 reduces but is still larger than diameter 11.
Thus the internal bore of the collet steps down from diameter 14 to diameter 15 to diameter 11.
A cross bore 16 is drilled across the collet at the junction of diameters 15 and 11, the cross bore 16 lying mainly across diameter 11. As a result two diametricaliy-opposed re cesses 17 are formed in the internal wall 18 of the collet defining bore 11 and are open to the inner region of the collet defined by dia meter 15.
The collet also comprises an end plug 19 formed with an elongate latching slot 20 adapted to accept and securely receive a "Clare" shanked cutting tool 21 according to the present invention. The plug 19 is exter nally screw-threaded as indicated at 22 to en gage with the screw-thread 14 of the collar.
With this plug 19 in position the collet can be used with the "Clare" shanked cutting tool 21. The plug 19 has an end hole 19A to receive a tool (not shown) to permit it to be screwed into and out of the collet.
If it is desired to used the collet with a cutting tool 23 with a screw-threaded shank according to the present invention, the end plug 19 is removed and an internally screwthreaded ring 24 is inserted into the collet from the narrower end. This ring 24 has two diametrically opposed dogs 25 which engage in recesses 17 the end plug 19 is then screwed back into the collet to secure the ring 24 in position. The collet is now ready to accept and securely receive the screwthreaded shanked cutting tool 23.
The shank is also provided with a "Weldon" and/or a "wistle" notch for alternative fixture.
Referring now to Fig. 3, the collet 26 is of externally tapered configuration with a cylindrical bore 27. It is axially split as indicated at 28 as is customary and at its larger diameter end is externally screw-threaded as indicated at 29 to receive a differential locking nut (not shown) but see Fig. 4.
The smaller-diameter end of the collet 26 has an internal hexagonal configuration 30 and outboard of the latter an internally screwthreaded region 31.
The collet 26 is provided with two hexagonal adapter plates 32 and 33 both dimensioned non-rotatably to be received in the configuration 30.
The adapter plate 32 is for a "Clare" shanked cutting tool 34 according to the present invention whereof the well-known "Clare" latch is indicated at 35. The adapter plate 11 has an elongate latching slot 36 into which latch 35 is inserted and then slightly rotated to prevent axial withdrawal.
The adapter plate 33 has a screw-threaded bore 37 adapted to receive the screwthreaded shank 38 of a cutting tool 39.
The selected adapter plate 32 or 33 is locked in position by a nut device 40 which screw engages into the region 31. This screw-engagement is either single or two start and is left handed so that any relative rotation of the cutting tool serves to tighten the locking action between the cutting tool or collet.
The nut device 40 has a spanner-engaging formation 41 to facilitate its disengagement by a spanner (not shown) from the collet.
If this collect were additionally adapted to receive "Weldon" or "wistle notch" shanked cutting tools according to the present invention then a screwing jack (not shown) is fitted into a screw-threaded bore indicated in dotdash line at 42 in the nut device 40.
Either of cutting tools 34 or 39 is additionally adapted to be secured in the manner of a "Weldon" shanked tool (parallel flat in shank) and/or in the manner of a "wistle notch" shanked tool (angled flat in tool shank).
In Fig. 4, a chuck is generally indicated at 43 and the collet or collet adapter at 44.
The latter receives, in this instance, a double-ended cutting tool 45 according to the invention having two cutting heads 46 and an intermediate shank 47.
The cutting tool 45 is notched radially as indicated at 48 in Fig. 7 to provide a "Weldon" shank and at a 2 angle as indicated at 49 in Fig. 8 to provide a "wistle notch" shank. With the latter the angled notched 49 are oppositely handed, while to provide a "Weldon" fixture only one radial notch 48 need be provided.
Reverting to Fig. 4, it can be seen that the double-ended cutting tool 12 is secured in position within the collet or collet adapter 44 by an Allen screw 50. With the "Weldon" radial notches 48, the Allen screw 50 will be received in a radial screw-threaded hole, while with the "wistle" angled notches 49 it will be received in an inclined screw-threaded hole.
Thus, the collet has at least two holes for the Allen screw.
The collet/collet adapter and cutting tool combination 44, 45 is secured in the chuck body 43 by a locking nut or collar 51 in manner known per se, which latter screw-engages the chuck body 43 and the collet or collet adapter 44.
A modified collet or collet adapter 52 is shown in Fig. 5, it being formed with a locating or guide nose 53. The other parts similar to those of Fig. 4 have the same references with the suffix "A".
A cutting tool according to this invention having a "Clare" shank is shown in Fig. 6 at 54. The "Clare" shank 55, as aforesaid, has oppositely-handed angled faces 56 to permit a bayonet type connection in a collet or collet adapter as is well known.
A "Clare" shank cannot be used with double-ended cutting tools but the shank 22 is additionally formed with "Weldon" and/or "wistle notch" configurations (not shown) so that it can be used in the collet adapted to accept and securely receive single-ended "Weldon" and/or "wistle notch" shanked cutting tools.
