Abstract

An electrical plug comprises a base (10) and a cap (11) attached to the base, the base (10) being provided with an integral flange (18) which projects beyond the edges of the cap (11) so that this flange (18) is engaged by the fingers of the user in order to pull the plug out of a socket. The cap (11) may be formed with inclined surfaces (26) to prevent it being gripped. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electrical plugs This invention relates to electrical plugs and its object is to increase the degree of safety.
Plugs are commonly made with a two-part housing one part or base of which carries all the electrical pins and connections while the other part is merely a cap, the two parts being held together by a single screw, and the capsometimes hasaflangeoverhangingthe base which the user uses to pull the plug out ofthe socket. We have found that this construction has a dangerous disadvantage because the pulling force is carried by the metal and plastics screw th reads and continual pulling on the cap can sometimes loosen the screw th reads which may give away and involve the possibility that an inquisitive young child or even an adult may be able to contactthe live connections.
According to the present invention the base is provided with an integral flange which projects beyondthe edges of the cap so that this flange is engaged by the fingers of the user in order to pull the plug out of the socket.
The flange may be provided around the entire edge ofthe base.
The edges of the cap may be spaced slightly from the edges ofthe flanges.
The cap may also be formed with inwardly inclined outer surfaces so that the user cannot pull outthe plug by pulling on the plug.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE lisa plan view ofthe plug, FIGURE 2 an underplan view, FIGURE 3 a rearview, FIGURE 4 a front end view, FIGURE 5 a side view, and FIGURE 6 a second on A-A with the cover raised.
The plug comprises a base 10 and a cap 11 both made of electrically insulating material. The base carries the pins 12 and the electrical connections including a fuse 13. The base is provided with walls 15 at right angles to a base wall 16. The edges ofthe walls 15 are formed with an outstanding flange 18which extends entirely around the edges exceptwherethe conductor cable enters at 20.
The base is recessed at 21 adjacentthe flange 18.
The cap has a top wall 25 connected to walls 26 which are inclined inwardly from its edges so that they cannot be grasped by the user. The edges ofthewals 26 are provided with a rim 29which can engage in the recess 21. The extreme outer edges 22 ofthe walls 26 are spaced as shown at 27 slightly from the external surface oftheilange 18.
The cap is attached to the base by a single screw 30 which enters an apertured boss 31 formed integrally with the cap.
1. An electrical plug having a base and a cap attached to the base, the base being provided with an integral flange which projects beyond the edges of the cap so thatthis flange is engaged by the fingers of the user in orderto pull the plug out of a socket.
2. An electrical plug as claimed in Claim 1,wherein the flange is provided around the entire edge ofthe base.
3. An electrical plug as claimed in Claim 1 or2, wherein the edges of the cap are spaced slightlyfrom edges ofthe flanges.
4. An electrical plug as claimed in Claim 1,2 or3, wherein the cap is formed with inwardly inclined outer surfaces so that the user cannot pull outthe plug by pulling on the cap.
5. An electrical plug substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
