Abstract

A step edge extrusion 1 with a front recess containing a clear polycarbonate tube 2 within which are light sources 4 positioned along its length. Light guides 3 are provided within the step edge along its length adjacent to each light source to transmit the light from the source to the top of the step edge. The step edge being illuminated both top and front from one light source. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Illuminated step edging This invention relates to an illuminated step edge.
Step edgings for stairs and raised floor areas have been designed with a recess to the front of the step edge to accept a tube containing light sources to provide illumination. The illumination thus provided is only visible from the front of the step edge. For safety and aesthetic reasons it is an advantage to illuminate the top of the step edge. To provide illumination to the top of the step edge it is at present necessary to add additional light sources, which adds to the complexity of construction, power consumption and overall cost.
According to the present invention there is provided a step edge with a recess to the front to accept a tube containing light sources set at regular intervals along its length. Light guides are provided within the step edge along its length adjacent to each light source to transmit the light from the source to the top of the step edge.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a cross section of the illuminated step edge showing the position of the light guide; Figure 2 shows a front elevation of the illuminated step edge; Figure 3 shows a front elevation of the illuminated step edge; and Figure 4 shows a cross section of an illuminated step edge with light guides using an alternative form of step edge.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, the illuminated step edge consists of a step edge extrusion 1 such as that sold as GRADUS Hardnose u.P.V.C. stair edging RN718. The front recess of the step edge contains a clear polycarbonate tube 2 the cross section of which may be circular or rectangular. This tube contains light sources 4 which are positioned along the tube at equal distances.
The light sources 4 may take the form of incandescent lamps, light emitting diodes, neons, fluorescent lamp, fluorescent material or photo-luminescent material.
Holes are taken through the step edge 1 at points adjacent to the light sources 4 contained in the tube 2, from the front recess to the top of the step edge. These holes contain light guides 3 by which the light is transmited from the source 4 to the top of the step edge. The light guides 3 may take the form of a fibre optical cable, glass rod, plastic rod or any material which is capable of transmiting light. The light guides 3 may be circular, square, rectangular or any form which may be accommodated within the step edge.
Fig. 4 shows the use of an alternative step edge extrusion 1 sold as GRADUS Aluminium stair edging CT728. The use of light guides to transmit light to the top of the step edge may be used in any other step which contains a front recess carrying an illuminated light tube.
1. A step edge with a recess to the front accept a tube containing light sources set at regular intervals along its length. Light guides are provided within the step edge along its length adjacent to each light source to transmit the light from the source to the top of the step edge.
2. An illuminated step edge as claimed in Claim 1 where the light tube consists of light emitting diodes optically coupled to the light guides within a solid opaque tube.
3. An illuminated step edge substantially as described here in with reference to Figs. 1-4 of the accompanying drawings.
