Abstract

A food processor is provided with a bowl 8, which has a central conical portion 13 housing a motor- driven, rotary drive shaft 4. The drive shaft 4 imparts rotation to an attachment 14 for processing food introduced into the bowl 8 through a feed-tube 11. The attachment 14 includes a hollow hub 17, the inner surface of which is fluted (Figs. 2, 3, 5, 6) to provide grooves which interengage with longitudinal grooves formed on the upper region of the shaft 4, thereby inhibiting rotational movement of the attachment 14 relative to the shaft 4. The height of the attachment 14 on the shaft 4 is dependent upon the depth of 8 depression 16 formed in the central portion of the attachment. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A food processor This invention relates to a food processor.
A conventional food processor includes a motor-driven rotary output located centrally in a support for a bowl, within which food to be processed is retained. The base of the bowl is formed with a central conical portion, which is located over the rotary output when the bowl is positioned on the support, and a drive shaft, attached to a food processing attachment, such as a cutter blade, is inserted down the conical portion and into the output.
However, such attachments, each being fixedly mounted on a substantially long drive shaft, are generally cumbersome to store, when not in use, particularly if there are a substantial number of such attachments, each for implementing a different processing operation.
Furthermore, some food processors are advantageously provided with braking means for stopping rotation of the attachment as quickly as possible, when the processing is complete.
This is usually implemented by reversing the rotational drive to overcome the inertia of the rotating attachment. It is, however, necessary in such processors to ensure that the shaft does not become separated from the output upon reversal of the output drive, which tends to cause the rotating attachment to be released.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved food processor, which alleviates the above-mentioned problems associated with food processors known hitherto.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a food processor including a rotary motor-driven shaft for imparting rotational drive to an attachment for processing food, said attachment being provided with a hollow hub portion to be removably located over the top of said shaft, the inner surface of said hub portion and the upper region of said shaft each being fluted to form a number of interengaging longitudinal grooves co-operable, when said hub is inserted over said shaft, to inhibit rotational movement of said attachment relative to said shaft.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a sectional view of a food processor, in accordance with the present invention, Figure 2 shows an enlarged plan view of a cutter disc shown in Fig. 1, Figure 3 shows an underside view of the cutter disc shown in Fig. 2, Figure 4 shows a sectional view through X-X in Fig. 2, Figure 5 shows an enlarged side view of the upper part of a drive shaft shown in Fig. 1, and Figure 6 shows a plan view of the shaft shown in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 1, a food processor includes a base 1 supporting a housing 2 accommodating a motor 3, which drives a rotary drive shaft 4 via a belt 5 and a suitable gearing arrangement 6. The shaft 4 is positioned centrally on a support pedestal 7, which provides support for a bowl 8 for containing food to be processed.
The bowl 8 has a side handle 9 and is provided with a locking lid 10 with a feedtube 11 formed therein. Base 12 of the bowl 8 is formed with a central conical portion 13, through which the shaft 4 extends when the bowl 8 is positioned on the support 7.
One or more attachments, such as a cutter disc, shown generally at 14, are secured to the top of the shaft 4 to be rotatably driven by the shaft to process food, either being fed into the bowl 8 via the feed tube 11 or already contained within the bowl.
The cutter disc 14 basically consists of a metal plate 15, formed with a centrally positioned depression 16 having a central aperture through which a metal hollow hub 17 is located. The hub 17 is located over the top of the drive shaft 4 to correctly position the cutting plate 1 5 and to enable rotational drive to be imparted to the plate.
The cutter disc 14 is shown in more detail in Figs. 2 to 5, wherein like parts are labelled with like reference numerls with respect to Fig. 1.
The hub 17 is formed with a flange 18 which is located under the depression of the plate 15, so that the upper end 19 of the hub 1 7 passes through the aperture in the depression 16. The hub 17 is then secured to the plate 1 5 by screws or rivets 20 through the flange 18 and plate depression 1 6. The plate 15 is also provided with a number of channelled depressions 21, which strengthen the thin metal plate 15 and a number of cutting edges or apertures, such as at 22, to provide shredding, grating, slicing, etc., of food pushed down the tube 11, before it passes into the bowl 8. The plate 15 is further formed with a depending skirt 33 around the periphery thereof.
The upper region of the shaft 4 is shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 6, wherein it can be seen that region 23 of the shaft 4 is fluted so as to form three longitudinal grooves 24, 25, 26.
This fluted region of the shaft 4 is arranged to interengage with the inner surface of the hollow hub 17, which is similarly fluted to provide inverted grooves 27, 28, 29, which, when correctly fitted over the top of the shaft 4, co-operate with the grooves 24, 25, 26 of the shaft.
The present invention thus provides a simple construction for removably securing the at tachment, for example the cutter disc, to the top of a drive shaft, so as to inhibit rotational movement of the attachment relative to the shaft. It can thus be envisaged that, when the rotary drive to the attachment is suddenly reversed to provide a brake for the rotating attachement, the attachment is inhibited from releasing itself from the top of the shaft 4.
Furthermore, the shaft 4 is intended to be permanently fixed into the output of the gearing arrangement 6, and the respective attachments for implementing different processing operations can be removably attached to the top thereof. The attachments to be stored, when not in use, are therefore only provided with a relatively short hub, rather than a substantially longer drive shaft, thereby alleviating the problem encountered with storage of known food processor attachments.
The present attachments are further advantageous in that the vertical distance, shown as h in Fig. 1, between the cutting plate 15 and the opening of the feed-tube 11 may be easily adjusted, during manufacture of each attachment, to suit the particular function of the attachment. This is implemented by simply adjusting the depth of the depression 16 of the plate 15, which sets the height of the plate 15, for each attachment.
The upper region 23 of the shaft 4 may be fluted to provide any suitable number of grooves and the inner surface of the hub 17 should be correspondingly fluted.
The hub 17 may also be adapted to support any type of food processing attachment required to be driven by the shaft 4.
A further feature of the present food processor is the shaping of the base 12 of the bowl 8, as shown in Fig. 1. The base 12 is shaped so as to provide a substantially flat base part 30 and side base parts 31, 32, joining the side wall and conical part 13 of the bowl, each part 31, 32 having a relativeiy large radius of curvature.
This shaping of the base 12 of the bowl enables food to be easily scraped from the bowl after processing and also enables the bowl to be easily cleaned.
If an attachment, such as cutter blades, positioned adjacent the base of the bowl is used, it may be advantageous to curve the blades slightly so as to follow the shaping of the bowl base.
