Abstract

A device to indicate you have overtaken other vehicles comprises two units which are connected by electric cable, one unit being placed at the back of the vehicle to pick up information by interpreting light intensity from other vehicles. This information is then displayed on the other unit which is inside the driving compartment and within view of the driver. Each unit consists of electronic components fixed inside the unit housings, the first unit including windows 4 and 7, filter 6, and a reflector to direct light onto a photodetector 7. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Safe over light This invention relates to an indicatory devise for use in overtaking.
The invention is for articulated lorries or any long back vehicle. The idea or invention is to indicate to the driver, at what point he has cleared the front end of a vehicle he may have overtaken.
One of the hazards of driving is in the area of overtaking other moving vehicles at night (i.e. when headlights are required). It is envisaged that the device or devices would be used to improve the safety of overtaking by indicating to a driver via a cab display that he has overtaken and cleared the front of a vehicle, and therefore he can safely change lane.
The invention consists of two different units, forming one overall unit. Within these units are several parts - description to follow: The safe overlight comprising a protective housing cover of plastic or metal in which is positioned a photo-sensitive devise (white light activated),thiswould be activated when light from a beam passes onto the photo sensitive cells. To eliminate the possibility of stray light activating the photocell orcells, ascreening devisewiil be used.
This devisewill allow lightfrom only the required angle necessaryto activate the photo sensitive cell to pass through. This will be hereafter referred to as Unit 1. Connected to Unit 1 via an electronic medium i.e. electrical cable, will be a display devise for use in the driving compartment of the same vehicle. This devise will be within view to the driver of the vehicle when he is positioned for normal driving activities.
This cab display devise will be housed in a plastic or metal unit. Internallythis unit consists of indicatory lights which will interact with Unit 1,when in operation. To inform the driver of his present safety position for returning to lane after overtaking. All the electronics of the following nature to be housed in this unit, i.e., resistors, capacitors, fuses, indicatory lights, fail safe warning devise, and this Unit to be called Unit 2.
Specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Listing for Fig ure 1 1. A housing unit made of either plastic or metal (not decided yet).
2. The internal housing for the photo sensitive device, connected in a stable manner.
3. Electronic connection box forthis unit.
4. Transparent device plastic or glass (not decided yet) with filter to eliminate stray light.
5. Reflective mirror. This reflects filtered light passing through device 4 onto second filter device 6.
6. Second filter device made oftransparent plastic orglass (not decided yet) with filterto eliminate stray light, fixed to housing unit by means notshown.
7. Transparent device covering photo sensitive cell 5, made of plastic or glass (not decided yet).
8. A photo sensitive device, sensitive to white light as omitted from a vehicle head lamp.
9. Photo sensitive devices electronic connections.
10. Wiring connecting photo sensitive device to 3.
11. A holding device for the wiring entering the unit.
12. Hole to allowwiring to enter unit 2.

1. A safe Overlight device, comprising of two units Figure 1, Figure 2, each unit being attached to the vehicle Figure 1 to the rear end there of and being fixed to a location sufficient to allow its actification when in operation. Figure 2to be attached inside the driving compartment within view of the driver whilst he is driving.
2. A safe overlight device as claimed in claim one, wherein Figure 1, and Figure 2 are connected together by an electronic medium, electric cable.
3. A safe overlight device as claimed in claim one or claim two wherein each unit Figure 1 or Figure 2 will be attached to the vehicle by means offixing bolts.
4. Asafe overlight device as claimed in claim three, where in each unit Figure 1 or Figure 2can have its component electronics removed for inspection or replacement. Afterthat unit is removed from the vehicle through the release of fixing bolts.
5. A safe overlight device as claimed in claim one orclaimtwo orclaim three orclaim fourwherein the electronics ofthe unit Figure 1 or Figure 2 are contained inside each unit.
6. Asafe overlight device as claimed in claim one orclaintwo or claim three or claim four or claim five wherein electric power to operate the unit Figure 1 or Figure 2 will be supplied by the vehicle the unit is attached to.
7. A safe overlight device as claimed in any proceeding claim wherein after the unit Figure 1 has been switched on the unit Figure 2 will startto operate. The unit Figure 2 will continue to operate until the unit Figure 1 is switched off.
8. A safe overlight device as described herein with reference to Figure 1 and Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
