Abstract

A moulded plastics panel such as a water tank lid has hollow tubular projections 12, 13 and 14 extending therefrom. Each projection is originally closed by a part 17 which can be removed by cutting to expose an aperture that extends though the panel for receiving a pipe 15, an air filter 14a or other fitting. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A moulded plastics panel TECHNICAL FIELD AND BACKGROUND ART The present invention relates to moulded plastics panel such as a cover or lid of a domestic water tank, particularly a header tank for a central heating system. Lids or covers for domestic water tanks are required to be close fitting to prevent dust and other debris from entering the tank and hence the water system. It is often necessary to provide a pipe (such as an expansion pipe) which enters the tank by way of an aperture formed in the cover. Conventionally covers or lids for water tanks are moulded in plastics and any aperture necessary for the fitting of a pipe is formed on site by cutting through the cover during installation of the tank.Usually an aperture required in the cover is cut by a fitter manually with a pocket or similar knife so that the resultant hole is often other than circular; as a consequence when a pipe is inserted into the aperture gaps may be formed in the cover by way of which debris can enter the tank.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a plastics moulded panel having a facility for forming apertures (of any cross sectional shape) therein and which alleviates the disadvantages of the above described conventional panels.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION AND ADVAN TAGES According to the present invention there is provided a moulded plastics panel having opposed first and second faces and an integral projection or boss which extends from the first face, the projection or boss which extends from the first face, the projection or boss being hollow to have a cavity therein which is continuous with the second face so that an aperture can be formed in the panel when a part of the projection or boss is cut away to expose the cavity in the first face.
The projection or boss will be moulded in the panel during its manufacture and although the projection (or rather its cavity) will usually be cylindrical in profile to conform to a standard diameter of piping, it will be realised that the projection can be of any cross sectional shape (for example to receive a filter through which a tank can breathe). Preferably the projection or boss will have a wall thickness thin enough to be cut easily and manually by, for example, a pocket knife.
Where the panel is a water tank cover or lid, a plurality of bosses or projections of different sizes can be provided at varying locations on the panel to permit pipes and other fittings of a range of sizes to be used with the cover. With a water tank lid or cover the projections or bosses may be internal or external of the lid/tank. It will be realised that although the present invention was-made principally with moulded water tank covers in mind it may have applications in many other forms of moulded plastics panels. Furthermore, the panel may itself form part of a component, for example as a side wall of a plastics moulded water tank.
It will be apparent that by the term "plastics" we include polymer material and/or resin material (as used for example with glass fibre reinforced tanks).
DRAWINGS One embodiment of a water tank having a lid or cover constructed in accordance with the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawings in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the tank and its fitted cover, and Figure 2 shows a sectional view of the tank and cover in Fig. 1 taken on the line l-l.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DRA WINGS The drawings show a water header tank 1 moulded from plastics and having a rectangular base from edges of which extend opposing upstanding side walls 2 and 3 and end walls 4 and 5 to form an open top. The tank 1 is provided with a close fitting moulded panel in the form of a plastics cover or lid 6 which has a substantially flat rectangular sheet 7 with peripheral flanges 8, 9, 10 and 11 extending downwardly therefrom. The flanges 8 to 11 overlap the upper edges of the tank side walls to ensure that debris can not enter the tank 1. Inter-engaging means (not shown) are provided between the cover 6 and the tank 1 to ensure that the cover is securely retained on the tank.
Provided on the sheet 7 are projections or bosses 12, 13 and 14 which facilitate the formation of circular apertures through the sheet and are integrally moulded with the cover 6. In the present example the projection 12 is used to form an aperture through the sheet 7 for the reception of an expansion pipe 15 and the projection 14 is used to form an aperture for the reception of an air filter 14a which permits the tank to breathe with the cover fitted.
The projection 13 is shown in a condition similar to that in which the projections 12 and 14 would be originally formed and comprises a cylindrical tubular portion 16 which extends from the outer face of sheet 7. The tubular portion 16 has its outer end closed by an integral part 17 so that the projection or boss is hollow having a cavity 18 which is continuous with the inner face of the sheet 7.
To form an aperture through the sheet 7 by use of the projection 13 it is merely necessary to remove the part 17 from the tubular portion 16 by cutting through the plastics material as indicated along the broken line 19.
The wall thickness of the tubular portion 16 is such as to be readily cut with a pocket knife.
In the example illustrated three projections or bosses have been provided in the cover 6 but it will be realised that any number of such projections can be formed to provide a convenient selection of sizes and locations for apertures.

Claims (6)

1. A moulded plastics panel having opposed first and second faces and an integral projection or boss which extends from the first face, the projection or boss being hollow to have a cavity therein which is continuous with the second face so that an aperture can be formed in the panel when a part of the projection or boss is cut away to expose the cavity in the first face.
2. A panel according to claim 1 wherein a plurality of said projections or bosses are provided on said panel from which a selection of apertures can be formed.
3. A panel according to either claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the or a projection or boss comprises a cylindrical tubular portion for forming a circular aperture.
4. A panel according to any one of the preceding claims and in the form of a water tank cover or lid.
5. A panel as claimed in claim 4 in which the projection or boss extends from the first face in a direction outwardly of the tank to which the cover or lid is to be fitted.
6. A panel according to claim 1 and substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawings.
