Abstract

A shelf display pack comprises a one-piece rectangular case with flaps 3 extending top and bottom from the sides 1, 2. To facilitate removal of an upper part to display goods, a through cut 4 is provided in the material of the case, which cut gives a clean display edge and is continued by way of a tear strip, line of perforations or other means 5 substantially retaining the transit strength of the case but allowing ready removal of the upper part of the case along a predetermined line. Branch cuts may define a front fold- down flap. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Display packs The invention relates to display packs.
The use of packs which not only protect goods in transit but form part of the sales display is growing. Such packs need to be particularly simple and quick to open, or they will not be used to best advantage by staff whose primary concern is getting shelves restocked.
Two part packs are available but are more expensive than one piece packs and the usual approach is to tear the pack open in various ways. For example packs are known in which perforations and tear strips allow for easy opening, the base of the pack going on the shelf and the top being discarded. With the usual corrugated laminate however this does not give clean opening, as the outer liner, usually printed with display or advertising material, is subject to random tears spoiling the appearance and negating a great part of the purpose of the pack.
We have realised that display packs particularly the simple one piece cases that are made in millions on basic case making equipment, can retain ample strength for transit if the face that will be the front as shelved, and the sides to part way along, e.g. 15/20%, have the material of the case ready cut through for removal of the top of the case, and the usual forms of separation by perforation, tear strips and the like are applied along the rest of the sides and the back where they will not show.
The pack may open to a uniform height tray or for example have sloping perforations or more preferably knife cuts from part way along the sides up to the full height at what will be the back of the pack when shelved.
The flap at this end can itself be perforated for removal or be left on, folded down the outside of the pack.
Another refinement, for better display, is a window at what will be the display end of the pack made by cuts downwards from the main through cut with the resulting flap folded inside before the pack is filled, or by a complete cut out, optionally with a loose piece of material behind the window removed when the pack is prepared for display or with the end flap of the pack folded down to cover the window in transit but removed with the discarded part of the pack for display.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings of embodiments thereof wherein Figure 1 shows a simple erected case according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a high back case ready for display; Figure 3 shows the front end of this case erected and with the top flaps open; Figures 4a and 4b show details of a window flap before folding (Fig. 4a) and afterwards (Fig. 4b, in the as displayed form); and Figure 5 shows a case with an alternative loose piece.
The case of Fig. 1, of standard corrugated laminate, is of generally standard design with display end 1, side 2 and top flaps 3 visible.
It has a through cut 4 running across the display end and part way along the sides and a line of perforations 5 the rest of the way along the sides and around the back to allow the whole top of the case to be ripped off for display.
The case of Fig. 2, a high backed design shown in display form has cut edges 6 and 7, and edges 8 are formed by ripping along perforations. At the rear 9 the top flap has been folded back behind. At the front a window 10 has been formed by folding down a flap 11 inside, freed by downward cuts 12.
Fig. 3 shows a case in which there is a window as in Fig. 2 but formed by complete removal of material. Behind it, part 13 of the front top flap of the case, which has been folded down inside, is seen. Along the sides, in place of perforations 8 of Fig. 2, is the line 14 of a tear strip 15 started by a tab 16. The tear strip in fact runs right round the inside of the box being incorporated in the full length of the laminate as manufactured, but the cuts 4 etc. run along it so it is effective only where required.
Figs. 4a and 4b, and Fig. 5, show details, Fig. 4a showing a window flap 17 before folding down and Fig. 4b the flap in position held by tabs 18 in the flap and cut outs 19 in the floor of the case. A friction fit of the flap is also suitable. Fig. 5 shows an alternative of a window completely cut out as in Fig. 3 but with a loose sheet 20 of the same laminate as the case or something lighter dropped in to cover it in transit.
All these case, particularly suitable for example for rolls of biscuits, are readily shelved, and give neat displays without loss of necessary strength in transit.

1. A shelf diplay pack, particularly a onepiece rectangular case with flaps extending top and bottom from the sides and folded together to form the top and bottom of the case, wherein at one end (the one that will be seen when the pack is used with the upper part removed to display goods) and part way along the sides, there is a through cut in the material of the case, which cut gives a clean display edge and is continued by way of a tear strip, line of perforations or other means substantially retaining the transit strength of the case but allowing ready removal of the upper part of the case along a predetermined line.
2. A pack according to claim 1 wherein the material of the case has a continuous tear strip applied in manufacture along the face that will form the inside of the case, the cut being made generally along the line of the tear strip (which is severed at the ends of the cut) and there being a thumb tab or other means at one or both ends of the cut to allow the strip to be seized for removal of the upper part of the case.
3. A shelf display pack substantially as herein described and shown in Fig. 1, 2, 3, 4a and 4b, or 5 of the drawings.
4. The pack of claim 1, 2 or 3 in the form of a blank adapted to be made up into said pack in fold flat or erected form.
