Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle Seat Frame The present invention relates to a vehicle seat frame capable of providing height adjustment of the seat whilst a person is sitting on the seat.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle seat frame including a seat cushion frame movably connected on each side to a support by front and rear linkage connections, at least the rear linkage connector being operable to vary the height of the seat. Preferably the front linkages are also operable to vary the height of the seat.
Various aspects of the present invention are hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a seat frame according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along line Il-Il in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line Il-Il in Figure 2.
The seat frame 10 includes a seat cushion frame 11 of generally rectangular shape having a pair of side members 12 (only one of which is visible in the drawings), a front member 14 and a rear member 15.
Each side member 12 is movably connected to a base support 17to enable the heightofthe side member 12 to be adjusted relative to the base support 17. In the illustrated embodiment, each base support 17 is in the form of a slide which in use enables the seat to be slid forwards or rearwards to adjust its position in a conventional manner.
Each side member 12 is provided with a depending bracket 18 which is connected by front and rear linkage connections 20, 22 to a bracket 24 upstanding from the base support 17.
The front linkage connection 20 includes a first lever 26 pivotally attached at one end to bracket 24 by a first pivot 29 and a second lever 28 pivotally attached to bracket 18 by a second pivot 30 and also pivotally attached to the first lever 26 by a third pivot 32.
Lever 28 is provided with arresting means 34 which operate to prevent pivotal movement of the second lever 28 and thereby hold the first linkage connection 20 in a desired position. The arresting means 34 illustrated include a pawl 36 pivotally attached to bracket 18 by a pivot 39. The pawl 36 includes a head portion 37 having a tooth formation 38 which meshes with an arcuate tooth formation 40 formed on lever 28. The pawl 36 is preferably biased by suitable resilient means (not shown) to a position whereat its tooth formation 38 is disgengaged from the tooth formation 40 on lever 28.
A cam 46 which is rotatably mounted on bracket 18 is located adjacent to the head portion 37 of the pawl 36 and is shaped so that in one rotational position it bears against the head portion 37 to hold the tooth formation 38 in meshed contact with tooth formation 40 and so that in another rotational position, it permits the head of the pawl to move under said bias to disengage tooth formation 38 from tooth formation 40.
Preferably the shape of cam 46 and head portion 37 are such that when the cam is in said one position the pawl is effectively locked in engagement with lever 28 by the cam 46. This is achieved in the illustrated embodiment by shaping cam 46 and the head portion 37 so that upward movement of the head portion 37 tends to rotate the cam in a given direction, but such rotative movement is prevented by a shoulder 46a on the cam. The pawl is therefore only released by rotating the cam 46 in the direction opposite to said given direction.
The cams 46 of each linkage connection 20 are connected to one another by a connecting rod 47 so that they rotate in unison and a handle 50 is provided for causing rotation of the cams 46.
The rear linkage connection 22 includes a lever 60 which is pivotally connected to the bracket 24 by pivot 61 and is also pivotally connected to bracket 18 by a pivot 62. The lever 60 is rotated about pivot 62 by means of a train of gears 65 and such rotation causes pivot 62 to rise or fall relative to base support 17.
Thus, lever 60 includes an arcuate tooth formation 68 which meshes with a gear 69 which in turn meshes with a drive gear 70. The drive gear 70 is mounted on a shaft 72 rotatably mounted in bracket 18. The shaft 72 projects from bracket 18 inwardly of the seat frame and is connected with a connection tube 74 which extends across the seat frame to connect with the rear linkage connection 22 formed on the opposite side of the seat frame.
The shaft 72 projects from bracket 18 outwardly of the seat frame to connect with a ratchet mechanism 80 via a clutch 81. The ratchet mechanism 80 includes a toothed ratchet wheel 84 fixedly mounted on a shaft 85 and a ratchet handle 86 rotatably mounted on the shaft 85. A ratchet lever 87 is pivotally mounted on handle 86 and includes first and second pawls 88,89 respectively. The lever 87 is movable between a first position whereat the first pawl 88 is biased into engagement with the ratchet wheel 84 and a second position whereat the second pawl 89 is biased into engagement with the ratchet wheel 84.
When the first pawl 88 is in engagement with the ratchet wheel 84 oscillatory movement of handle 86 about shaft 85 causes advancement of the ratchet wheel in a clockwise direction (as seen in Figure 1) whereas when the second pawl 89 is in engagement with ratchet wheel 84 oscillatory movement of handle 86 about shaft 85 causes advancement of the ratchet wheel in an anti-clockwise direction.
The clutch 81 includes a casing 90 of generally cylindrical shape which is attached at one end to support 18 and is closed at its opposite end by an end wall 91. The end wall 91 is formed with a tubular portion 93 which rotatably supports shaft 85.
Housed within the casing 90 is a coiled spring 94 which is biased outwardly into abutment with the inner cylindrical surface of the casing. The spring 94 is provided at opposite ends with depending end portions 96 which project in a general direction toward the axis of the casing.
As seen in Figure 3, shaft 75 is provided with a pair of generally radially extending arms 97 which project radially beyond the end portions 96, both end portions 96 being located between arm 97. The arms 97 are defined by a generally V-shaped member which is secured to shaft 75 so as to be rotatable therewith. The member has a sufficient axial extent so that rotation of shaft 75 in either direction causes one of the arms 97 to engage one of the depending end portions 96. Such engagement tends to attempt to rotate the spring 94 by pushing on one of the end portions and in so doing urges the spring outwards to bear with greater force against the inner cylindrical surface of the casing. Accordingly the train of gears 65 attempt to rotate shaft 75, such as when someone sits on the seat, the clutch 81 functions to stop such movement.
Shaft 85 is provided with a single radially extending arm 98 which is located between the depending end portions 96. Rotation of shaft 85 in either direction moves the arm 98 into engagement with one of the depending end portions 96 and attempts to rotate the spring 94 by pulling said one end portion, which movementtendsto draw the spring from the cylindrical surface to reduce the force with which it bears against the casing.
Accordin'y such movement is permitted. On continued rotation of arm 98, It aDuts against one of the arms 97 (with the respective end portion located therebetween) and so moves shaft 75 in the same direction.
In use height adjustment of the seat frame is achieved by independently operating the front or rear linkage connections 20, 22. Thus the height of the front and rear of the seat may be each independently adjusted.
Adjustment of the front pair of linkage connections 20 is achieved by firstly moving handle 50 to move cam 46 of each linkage connection 20 to its rotational position whereat its co-operating pawl 36 moves out of engagement with associated lever 28. The operative is then able to lean backwards to cause an upwards movement of the front of the seat frame about pivot 61 or alternatively cause a downwards movement of the front of the seat frame about pivot 61 by leaning forwards, counterbalance springs (not shown) being provided to assist and damp such movement. The upwards or downwards movement of the front of the seat frame causes rotation of levers 28. Accordingly when the front of the seat frame is at the desired height, the handle 50 is used to move cams 46 to lock their associated pawls 36 in engagement with their associated levers 28 to retain them in position.
Height adjustment of the rear linkage connections 22 is achieved by an operative oscillating handle 86 whilst seated on the seat to cause rotation of lever 60 in a desired direction to cause the rear of the seat frame to either rise orfall. The drive to lever 60 is in constant engagement and run back through the train of gears 65 is prevented by the clutch 81.
Accordingly oscillation of the handle 86 causes a gradual increase or decrease in height adjustment which is always under the full control of the operative. To reverse direction of height adjustment, the operative only has to adjust ratchet lever87.
