The flange is gripped between an end portion (21) of the lever (10) and a seat (17) of the body (15). An opposite end portion (22) of the lever bears on a bearing surface (25) of the body which is inclined to the axis (27) of curvature of a part-cylindrical seat (16) of body (15) which engages tube (11). Seat (16) extends the entire length of body (15) and seat (17) faces away from seat (16). To clamp tube (11) to seat (16) the clamping means includes a curved element (18) pivotally connected to body (15) and a screw and nut mechanism (19). The screw and nut mechanism (24) acts on intermediate portion (23) of lever (20). Description

SPECIFICATION Title: "improvements relating to a scaffold fitting" Description of Invention According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a scaffold fitting comprising a body and clamping means for clamping the body to a scaffold tube and for clamping the body and tube to a flange, wherein the body defines a part-cylindrical seat for receiving the tube and has a bearing surface which faces away from the seat, .wherein the clamping means includes a lever which has a first end portion for engaging the flange, in use, a second end portion which bears against the bearing surface of the body, in use, and an intermediate portion which is subjected, in use, to clamping pressure by a further component of the clamping means to urge the end portions of the lever against the flange and body respectively and wherein the bearing surface diverges from an axis of curvature of the seat in a direction along the lever from the second end portion to the first end portion thereof.
The flange may be a flange of an "I" section beam or post. The postion at which the lever engages the bearing surface of the body depends upon the thickness of the flange with which the first end portion of the lever is engaged. The divergence of the bearing surface from the axis of curvature of the seat renders the fitting particularly suitable for use on flanges having substantially different thicknesses.
The body of a fitting in accordance with the first aspect of the invention preferably has a further bearing surface, said bearing surfaces being substantially co-planar and being spaced apart by a guide formation of the body and the second end portion of the lever having a guide formation which co-operates with the guide formation of the body to control lateral displacement of the second end portion of the lever relative to the body.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a scaffold fitting comprising a body and clamping means for clamping the body to a scaffold tube and for clamping the body and tube to a flange, wherein the body defines a part-cylindrical seat for receiving the tube and a second seat which faces away from the part-cylindrical seat and engages the flange, when the fitting is in use.
The second seat may have spaced projections which contact the flange in use.
The first and second aspects of the invention are preferably embodied in one fitting.
The second seat facilitates the establishment of a stable, non-slipping relation between the body and flange.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of attaching a scaffold tube to a flange by means of a scaffold fitting wherein the tube is clamped to a seat of the fitting and the flange is clamped between opposed seating surfaces of the fitting.
There is also provided in accordance with the invention a structure comprising a scaffold tube, a flanged member and a fitting according to the first aspect and/or the second aspect of the invention, the tube being attached to the flanged member by the fitting.
An example of a fitting embodying both the first and the second aspects of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows diagrammatically a side view of the fitting in use to attach a scaffold tube to a flange of a beam.
The structure illustrated in the drawing comprises a flanged member 10 which, in the particular example illustrated, is a horizontal beam 10 having a "l"-shaped cross-section. The structure further comprises a scaffold tube 11 which is attached to the beam by a pair of fittings (one only of which is shown in the drawing at 12) and which is spaced a short distance downwardly from the lower surface of the beam 10.
The fitting 12 is engaged with one lower flange 14 of the beam and with the tube 11.
The fitting comprises a body 15 which defines a part-cylindrical seat 16 engaged by the tube and a second seat 17 engaged by the underside of the flange 14. The seat 17 faces away from the seat 16 and is relatively short, lying adjacent to one end of the body 15; whereas the seat 16 extends along the entire length of the body.
Clamping means is provided for clamping the tube 11 to the seat 16 and for clamping the flange 14 to the seat 17. The clamping means comprises a curved element 18 which presents a part-cylindrical surface towards the tube 11, is pivotally connected with the body 1 5 adjacent to one of its ends and is releasably connected with the body adjacent to its opposite end by a screw and nut mechanism 19. The element 18 and the body collectively form a clamp which can embrace the tube 11 tightly and which can be released from the tube and opened to allow the fitting to be removed from the tube.
The clamping means further comprises a lever 20 having a first end portion 21 for engaging the flange 14, to grip the flange between the seat 17 and the end portion 21, a further end portion 22 and an intermediate portion 23. The intermediate portion 23 defines an aperture through which there extends the screw of a further screw and nut mechanism 24 which can be operated to drive the intermediate portion 23 of the lever towards the body 15.
The body 1 5 further defines a pair of bearing surfaces 25 and 26 which face generally away from the seat 16 and lie adjacent to an end of the body remote from the seat 17.
The bearing surfaces 25 and 26 are substantially parallel to each other and diverge from the axis 27 of curvature of the seat 16 in a direction along the lever 20 towards the first end portion 21 thereof. The angle of divergence is preferably within the range 5"-15".
The bearing surfaces 25 and 26 are spaced apart and between them lies a recess 28. The second end portion 22 of the lever 20 has a projection 29 which extends into the recess 28 when the end portion 22 is engaged with the bearing surfaces 25 and 26. The projection thereby prevents substantial displacement of the end portion 22 relative to the body 15 in a direction laterally of the lever.
The seat 17 preferably has a number of spaced projections, for example a pair of ribs, for engaging the downwardly facing surface of the flange 14. The body 15 can be clamped, by means of the lever 20, to the flange 14 before the tube 11 is clamped to the fitting.
However, the fitting will usually be attached first to the.tube 11 and then to the flange 14.
As the screw and nut mechanism 24 is tightened, the second end portion 22 of the lever is driven into pressure contact with the bearing surfaces 25 and 26. The exact position along these bearing surfaces at which the surfaces are contacted by the end portion 22 depends upon the thickness of the flange 14.
In a case where the fitting is applied to a relatively thick flange, the lever contacts the bearing surfaces 25 and 26 at a position which is somewhat nearer to the screw and nut mechanism 24 than is the case when the fitting is attached to a relatively thin flange 14.
The other fitting is substantially identical with the fitting 12 and is used in a corresponding manner to attach the tube 11 to the other lower flange 30 of the beam.
The- features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the accompanying drawings expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
