Abstract

A road traffic cone comprises an inflatable cone portion (1) formed from welded plastics sheet material, a weighted base portion (2), and a light reflecting band (3) comprising a separately formed sleeve fitted on to the cone portion (1). The sleeve (3) is advantageously positively located on the cone portion (1) by an inflating valve (4) which projects from the cone portion (1) and passes through an aperture in the sleeve 3. The base portion (2) is conveniently formed from welded plastics sheet material defining a hollow annulus surrounding the base of the cone portion (1) and secured to it, the hollow annulus being filled with weighting material. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Traffic cones This invention relates to road traffic cones.
In the past it has been illegal for drivers of private vehicles and freight vehicles to use traffic cones as a hazard warning, for example, in the event of a breakdown on a motorway.
However, recent legislation has been passed permitting the use of traffic cones in sets of four by vehicle drivers. There is, therefore, a need for a traffic cone which can be economically manufactured and stored compactly in sets of four. The object of this invention is to provide such a traffic cone.
According to the invention, a road traffic cone comprises a weighted base portion and an inflatable cone portion formed from welded plastics sheet material.
Preferably the base portion is also formed from welded plastics sheet material in the form of a hollow annulus filled with weighting material.
The cone portion is formed from a legally required red plastics material and the required light reflecting band may be fitted on to the cone portion as a sleeve and be positively located in position by the inflating valve for the cone portion which passes through in an aperture formed in the light reflecting band.
One construction of traffic cone in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of the cone, Figure 2 is a section on the line ll-ll of Fig.
1 and Figure 3 is a plan view from above of the cone.
Referring to the drawings, the cone is formed by welding up flexible plastics sheet material, e.g. PVC. It comprises a cone portion 1 and a base portion 2. A band of light reflecting sheet material 3 is fitted on to the cone portion 1 as a sleeve.
The cone portion 1 is formed from a single piece of material cut and welded so that it will form a cone shape when inflated. An inflating valve 4 is provided part way down the cone portion 1. The reflecting band 3 is also cut and welded so that it wedges, so to speak, on the cone portion 1, to leave the requisite bands 5 and 6 of the base material above and below the reflecting band 3. The reflecting band 3 is also positively located on the cone portion 1 by the valve 4 which projects through a close fitting hole in the band 3.
The base portion 2 is formed from two discs 7 and 8 of sheet material joined together at their outer peripheries along weld line 9. The two discs 7 and 8 are also joined together and to the lower edge of the cone portion 1 along a circular weld line 10. The welding is carried out with the sheet material of the base portion 2 laid flat. Thus the base portion 2 is formed into an annular chamber 11 around the outside of the cone portion 1 and a central web 12 of double sheet thickness closing the base of the cone portion 1.
The annular chamber 11 of the base portion 2 has a filling hole 13 with closure cap and is filled with a weighting material such as sand, or liquid or a gel.
Preferably the cone is supplied filled with weighting material, so that all that is required for use in a hazard situation is for the cone portion 1 to be inflated. This can be readily done by mouth or by a pump or compressed air container. Hence the cones can be conveniently packed in sets of 4 and carried in the boot of a car without taking up an undue amount of space.
1. A road traffic cone comprising a weighted base portion, an inflatable cone portion formed from welded plastics sheet material, and a light reflecting band comprising a separately formed sleeve fitted on to the cone portion.
2. A road traffic cone according to- claim 1, wherein said sleeve is positively located on said cone portion by an inflating valve for the cone portion and which projects from said cone portion and passes through an aperture in said sleeve.
3. A road traffic cone according to claim 1, wherein the base portion is formed from welded plastics sheet material defining a hollow annulus surrounding the base of the cone portion and secured to it, the hollow annulus being filled with weighting material.
4. A road traffic cone according to claim 3, wherein the base portion is formed from two discs of plastics sheet material welded to each other at their outer peripheries and also to each other and to the lower edge of the cone along a circular weld line.
5. A road traffic cone substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

In the past it has been illegal for drivers of private vehicles and freight vehicles to use traffic cones as a hazard warning, for example, in the event of a breakdown on a motorway. However, recent legislation has been passed permitting the use of traffic cones in sets of four by vehicle drivers. There is, therefore, a need for a traffic cone which can be economically manufactured and stored compactly in sets of four. The object of this invention is to provide such a traffic cone. According to the invention, a road traffic cone comprises a weighted base portion and an inflatable cone portion formed from welded plastics sheet material. Preferably the base portion is also formed from welded plastics sheet material in the form of a hollow annulus filled with weighting material. The cone portion is formed from a legally required red plastics material and the required light reflecting band may be fitted on to the cone portion as a sleeve and be positively located in position by the inflating valve for the cone portion which passes through in an aperture formed in the light reflecting band. One construction of traffic cone in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of the cone, Figure 2 is a section on the line ll-ll of Fig. 1 and Figure 3 is a plan view from above of the cone. Referring to the drawings, the cone is formed by welding up flexible plastics sheet material, e.g. PVC. It comprises a cone portion 1 and a base portion 2. A band of light reflecting sheet material 3 is fitted on to the cone portion 1 as a sleeve. The cone portion 1 is formed from a single piece of material cut and welded so that it will form a cone shape when inflated. An inflating valve 4 is provided part way down the cone portion 1. The reflecting band 3 is also cut and welded so that it wedges, so to speak, on the cone portion 1, to leave the requisite bands 5 and 6 of the base material above and below the reflecting band 3. The reflecting band 3 is also positively located on the cone portion 1 by the valve 4 which projects through a close fitting hole in the band 3. The base portion 2 is formed from two discs 7 and 8 of sheet material joined together at their outer peripheries along weld line 9. The two discs 7 and 8 are also joined together and to the lower edge of the cone portion 1 along a circular weld line 10. The welding is carried out with the sheet material of the base portion 2 laid flat. Thus the base portion 2 is formed into an annular chamber 11 around the outside of the cone portion 1 and a central web 12 of double sheet thickness closing the base of the cone portion 1. The annular chamber 11 of the base portion 2 has a filling hole 13 with closure cap and is filled with a weighting material such as sand, or liquid or a gel. Preferably the cone is supplied filled with weighting material, so that all that is required for use in a hazard situation is for the cone portion 1 to be inflated. This can be readily done by mouth or by a pump or compressed air container. Hence the cones can be conveniently packed in sets of 4 and carried in the boot of a car without taking up an undue amount of space. CLAIMS
1. A road traffic cone comprising a weighted base portion, an inflatable cone portion formed from welded plastics sheet material, and a light reflecting band comprising a separately formed sleeve fitted on to the cone portion.
2. A road traffic cone according to- claim 1, wherein said sleeve is positively located on said cone portion by an inflating valve for the cone portion and which projects from said cone portion and passes through an aperture in said sleeve.
3. A road traffic cone according to claim 1, wherein the base portion is formed from welded plastics sheet material defining a hollow annulus surrounding the base of the cone portion and secured to it, the hollow annulus being filled with weighting material.
4. A road traffic cone according to claim 3, wherein the base portion is formed from two discs of plastics sheet material welded to each other at their outer peripheries and also to each other and to the lower edge of the cone along a circular weld line.
5. A road traffic cone substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
