Abstract

A container (2, 3) for a source (1) of high voltage, comprises at least first and second parts (2, 3), wherein the surface distance over the surfaces (2a, 3a) between a cavity (1a) and an external surface (8) is substantially greater than the linear distance between said cavity (1a) and said external surface (8). In the embodiment the surfaces (2a, 3a) are formed by concentric rings and grooves which may be moved together by supports (not shown) on the parts of the container. The container is preferably nylon and the source is an electrostatic power supply for spray equipment. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Container for containing a source of high voltage In order to isolate a high-voltage source from the ground, various techniques have been used. Included in these techniques are the containment ofthe source in a container and the use of an O-ring orsimilarseal to seal any gaps in the container. Also a grease or oil or other high dielectric strength material has been used to fill the gaps in the container. Lastly, the high-voltage source has been completely em bedded in a high dielectric material such as nylon.
According, however, to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a containerforcontain- ing a source of high voltage, said containercomprising at least first and second parts which adjoin each other, a n i nterio r cavity an interiorcavityforcontaining said source, and an external surface; andjointsurfaces on each of said parts located atthejuncture of said parts, the surface distance over said joint surfaces between said cavity and said external surface being substantially greaterthan the linear distance between said cavity and said external surface.
Preferably, the container has an air passage be tween the said jointsurface ofthe respective parts.
Preferably said joint surfaces are provided on complementary interlocking rings.
Preferably, each said part comprises a plurality of concentric rings.
The container is preferably comprised of a material having a high dielectric strength.
A source of high voltage is preferably disposed within the said cavity, the said source being such that it will are to ground when positioned a pred- etermined distance from the ground, the minimum surface distance between the cavity and the said external surface being greaterthan said predetermined distance.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a container in combination with a source of high voltage, where said voltage source will arcto ground when positioned a predetermined distance from ground, said container comprising: at least first and second parts; a cavity containing said source, said cavity being formed with said parts; an external surface; and joint surfaces on each of said parts located atthejuncture of said parts, the minimum surface distance between said cavity and said external surface being greaterthan said predetermined distance.
The high-voltage source may be that of an electro staticpowersupplyto be used with an electrostatic spray equipment.
The invention is illustrated, merely byway of example, in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional view of a container according to the present invention.
An example of the present invention is shown in the drawing. As shown therein, a high-voltage source, designated 1, is located within an interior cavity 1 a formed in a container which is formed of first and second parts or body portions 2, 3, respectively, the high voltage source 1 being connected to a lead 5 which extends externally of the body portions 2, 3. The container is formed of a material having a high dielectric strength, e.g. nylon. Each of the body portions 2 and 3 is supported by respective support means (not shown) and has a series of concentric rings and grooves which interlock within one another at the juncture of the body portions 2,3, as shown in the drawing, to form a containerforthe present invention.
By relative adjustment of said support means so as to effect appropriate control of the clearances between rings 2a on the body portion 2 and rings 3a on the body portion 3, a path can be provided for air to pass between the voltage source 1 and a possible external ground 4. The actual path length is designated by a dotted line 6 shown in the drawing. The length of the dotted line 6, if straightened out, is many times longer than the shortest path connected between point 7 on the surface of the voltage source 1 and the external ground 4 on the external surface 8 ofthe container 2, 3. For a given voltage, there is a minimum air distance between the high voltage source 1 and the ground 4 such that arcing will occur. As long as the actual air path for a given voltage is longer than the minimum required air distance, no arcing will occur. The construction described above thus provides a way of substantially increasing the air path in a relatively compact container, such as shown in the drawing, to eliminate arcing. If the concentric rings were eliminated by making the body portions 2 and 3 merely butt together, arcing will occur between voltage source and ground 4. However, with the construction shown, the electrons have to travel through the air gap formed between the concentric teeth 3a and 2a.
