Abstract

In a lamp arrangement having a fluorescent lamp 4 and a choke 5 mounted on a support 3, the lamp has at least a portion which is generally "L-shaped" and the choke 5 is dispersed within the angle of the "L". As shown a luminaire has a circular backplate 1 which is apertured for screwing to a wall or ceiling. The backplate 1 has a diffuser 2 screw-threaded or otherwise secured to it so that together the backplate 1 and diffuser 2 define a housing for electrical lighting. The luminaire has a moulded circular cover 3 contoured to receive a fluorescent lamp 4, a choke 5, a terminal block 6, a power factor corrector capacitor 7 and a starter 9 on its outwardly-directed face. The lamp 4 fits neatly within the confines of the cover 3 and the choke 5 fits within one of the D's 11 of the lamp 4 so that it does not extend outwardly from the cover 3 further than the lamp 4. The capacitor 7 fits within the other D 12 of the lamp 4, while the terminal block 6 is disposed between the D's 11 and 12. The starter 9 is also fitted within the extremeties of the lamp 4. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION This invention relates to a luminaire According to the present invention there is provided a luminaire having a support, afluorescent lamp mounted on the support and a chokeforthelamp mounted on the support, the lamp having at least a portion which is generally L-shaped and the choke being disposed within the angle of the L.
By being within the angle oftheLofthe lampthe choke and lamp mayextend outwardlythe same general distancefromthesupport. In priorart arrangements the choke has been disposed on the supportwiththe lamp spacedfurtherfrom the support, so thatthe choke is between the support and the lamp. The disposition in the present invention produces a more compact and flexible design.
The lamp may have a more complex shape than a simple L, for example U-shaped orsquare, but in each case the choke fits within the confines of an angle of the lamp. A particularly suitable lamp is a Thorn 2D 28W lamp which is generally in the form of a pairof D's conjoined; the choke may fit within one of the D-shaped portions. Suitable-sized chokes for use with the Thorn lamp are, for example, Schawabe NG 2û45, Zumtobel EC20 and May and Christie D 18-30-2K4 chokes.
An embodiment ofthe present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :- Fig. lisa part-sectional side view of a luminaire of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe luminaire of Fig. 1 with the diffuser removed; Figs. 3,4 and 5 are respectively a plan view of the cover of the luminaire of Fig. 1, a section on A-A of Fig.
3 and a section on X-X of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a wiring diagram forthe lamp and other electrical items in the luminaire of Fig. t.
Referringtothe drawings, a luminaire ofthis embodiment ofthe invention has a circular backplate î which is apertured (not shown) for screwing to a wall or ceiling. The backplate 1 has a diffuser 2 screwthreaded or otherwise secured to it so thattogether thebackplate 1 and diffuser2 define a housing for electrical lighting as will be described.
The luminaire is double-insulated by means of a moulded polycarbonate circular cover 3 contoured to receive a Thorn 2D-28Wfluorescent lamp 4, a Schwabe NG 2045 chokeS, a terminal block 6, a power factor corrector capacitor7 and a starter 9 on its outwardly-directed face. The cover 3 is secured to the backplate 1 by three screws inserted through apertures 10 into corresponding holes in the backplate The electrical wiring to the electrical items 4to 9 is shownin Fig. 6.
The arrangement of the lamp 4 on the cover 3 is such thatthe lamp 4 fits neatly within the confines of the cover 3. The choke 5 is of a size and shape which allows itto be fitted within one of the D's 11 of the lamp 4 that it does not extend outwardly from the cover 3 furtherthan the lamp 4.The capacitor7 fits within the other D 12 ofthe lamp 4, whiletheterminal block6 is disposed between the D's 11 and 12. The starter 9 is also fitted within the extremities of the lamp 4.
As can be seen from Fig. 1 ,the luminaire ofthis embodiment provides a compact construction of very small depth, which allows the luminaireto befitted to a ceiling or wall with little protrusion eitherforwardly or rearwardlythereof.
Modifications and improvements may be incorpo rated without departing from the scope of the invention.
