Description

SPECIFICATION Refrigeration system for a vehicle body This invention relates to a refrigeration system fora vehicle body, such as a rail vehicle, used fortransporting goods, and to a vehicle provided with such a refrigeration system.
There is a need for a refrigeration system that can produce and maintain a selectedtemperaturewithin the vehicle body over a wide temperature range and for maintaining the selected temperature when the refrigeration unit is inoperative for long periods of time, such as when the vehicle is stationary.
According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided a refrigeration system for a vehicle body, comprising a refrigeration unit, meansforconducting the refrigerant from the refrigeration unit through a plurality of tubers surrounded by a eutectic substance contained within concentric tubes, said concentrictubes being located within a liquid having a low freezing point, a heat exchanger provided with means for circulating therethrough air supplied to the interior of the body, conduit means for circulating at least part of the liquid through the heat exchanger to cool the air, said conduit means including a valve forcontrolling the amount of said liquid circulated through the heat exchanger, and a temperature sensing device for controlling the valve.
Preferably the refrigeration unit is driven from an axle of a wheel of the vehicle.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa diagrammatic illustration of a rail vehicle provided with a refrigeration system according to the present invention; and Figure2 is a diagrammatic illustration ofthe refrigeration system.
The vehicle shown in Figure lisa railway waggon having a body 10 which may be insulated and wheels 11. Provided on the vehicle is a refrigeration unit 12 which is driven by a drive transmission 13 from an axle of one of the wheels 11. Such a drivetransmis- sion 13 and refrigeration unit 12 may be as described in my published applications GB 2 116302 A and EP 0 087885.
Provided on the body 10 is a heat exchanger unit 14 having a a n 1 5 fan 15 forcirculating airthrough the heat exchanger unit 14. The fan 15 is preferably driven by an electric motor 16.
As will be seen more clearly from Figure 2, there- frigerantfrom the refrigeration unit 12 is pumped through a conduit 17, by a pump (not shown) driven from the transmission 13, to a plurality oftubes 18 and returned through a conduit 19 back to the re frigeration unit 12. Each of the tubes 18 containing the refrigerant is surrounded by a concentric tube 20 and the space between the tubes 18 and 20 is filled with a eutectic substance 21 having a low freezing point. The tubes 18, 20 are located within an insulated container 22 containing a liquid 23 having a low freezing point.
The liquid 23 is conveyed by a pump 24, preferably electrically driven, through a conduit 25 to the heat exchanger 14 and after circulating through the heat exchanger 14 in heat exchange with the air drawn therethrough bythefan 15, it is returned bya conduit 26 to the container 22. The conduits 25 and 26 are interconnected by a by-pass conduit 27 and a valve 28 is provided for controlling the amount of liquid flowing to the heat exchanger 14. The valve 28 is controlled by a temperature sensiiig device 29. An adjustable temperature setting device 30 is provided for setting the temperature required in the body 10.
The system can include means for ducting heated air into the body 10so that a wide temperature range can be achieved within the body 10. The temperature range may be70Cto minus260C.
The eutectic substance 21 provided in the space between the tubes 18 and 20 enables latent heat to be stored andthusthe body 10can be maintainedatthe selected temperature for long periods oftime when the refrigeration unit 12 is inoperative, such as when thewaggon is stationary.
The liquid 23 may comprise an ethylene based liquid such astrichlorethylene ora brine.
It is possible to defrost the heat exchanger 14 without destroying the reservoir of lowtemperature stored by the eutectic substance 21 and the liquid 23.
This is done by passing warm liquid through the heat exchanger 14 with the valve 28 causing the liquid 23 to by-pass the heat exchanger 14 or by topping the pump 24.
Preferably the amount of eutectic substance 21 is sufficient to maintain the temperature within the body 10 at the lowest selected temperature with the refrigeration unit 12 inoperativefora period of eighteen hours.
