Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for conveying bottles The present invention relates to an apparatus for conveying bottles, more especially plastics material bottles, which are provided with a supporting collar in the mouth region, such an apparatus including a guide track and a compressed-air nozzle duct which co-operates with said guide track.
Apparatus are known which are utilised for the rapid conveyance of lightweight plastics material bottles between the region of a supply station and subsequent processing machines. Such conveyors include a guide track and a compressed-air nozzle duct which is in direct abutment with the guide track and is directed towards the mouth region of the bottles to be conveyed. In such arrangement, the compressed-air flows directly towards the mouth or shoulder region of the bottles to be conveyed and has a relatively small area of contact here, with the result that a strong current of air is required to move the individual bottles. On the other hand, because the air nozzles are provided so as to lie directly in the mouth region of the bottles, especially in operations relating to the beverage industry, it is impossible to eliminate the risk of infecting the contents of the bottles.Considerable problems may result, especially when sensitive beverages are concerned, which are decanted into the bottle in a subsequent filling machine.
'The present invention seeks to overcome these disadvantages, and the following objects are to be individually or jointly achieved: -the avoidance of infection, the mouth openings of the bottles should be as far away as possible from the nozzle region directing the compress-air onto the bottle surface; -a single apparatus should be capable of dealing with bottles of different sizes (length, diameter, configuration) simultaneously.
-if the entire apparatus needs to be adapted to different bottle sizes or configurations, this operation should, where possible, be unnecessary or, if in fact needed, should be carried out by simple means.
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus for conveying bottles which are provided with a supporting collar in the mouth region, with said apparatus including a guide track and a compressed-air nozzle which co-operates with said guide track and wherein said guide track is disposed above, and at a distance from, a respective compressed-air nozzle duct provided on either side of the conveyer path for the bottles, and said nozzle ducts are spaced from one another at a distance which is considerably greater than the diameter of the bottles to be- conveyed; guide rails being disposed below the nozzle ducts to limit lateral displacement of the bottles.
In such an arrangement, it has proved advantageous for a respective compressed-air supply duct to be disposed beneath each nozzle duct, and for the guide rail to be mounted on said supply duct.
Finally, within the scope of the invention, it is proposed that at least one end of the nozzle and/or supply duct be provided with retaining clamps or support arms for mounting the guide track, said support means being adjustably mounted both in the region of the ducts and in the region of the guide track in associated securing members.
The above-described objects are amply/fully achieved by the embodiment according to the invention. In particular, one and the same apparatus may be used to deal with different bottles of any desired size, shape and without compressed-air impinging directly on the mouth region of such bottles, Furthermore, a simple adjustment operation to adapt to different bottles, if necessary, can be readily carried out.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view through a main part of a plastics material bottle conveying apparatus; and Figure 2 is a simplified perspective view of the apparatus of Fig. 1.
An apparatus for conveying plastics material bottles is illustrated in Fig. 1, and includes a guide track 1 which is advantageously formed from two straight angled rails 2 which are spaced from each other, and which guide track 1 serves to receive a supporting collar 3 of plastics material bottles 4. Compressed-air nozzle ducts 5 and 6 disposed beneath track 1 and are spaced apart and disposed on opposite sides of the travel path for the bottles 4. The compressed-air ducts 5 and 6 have outlet apertures or nozzles such as to direct compressed air towards bottles 4 in a direction to cause such to be displaced in the direction of conveyance. The ducts 5 and 6 advantageously include an upper nozzle duct part having inclined apertures 7, as mentioned, through which the compressed-air can be discharged towards the bodies of the bottles 4 for the purpose of advancing the bottles.A respective distribution manifold or supply duct 8 is disposed beneath each nozzle duct 5 in communication therewith.
Guide rails 9 and 10 are provided beneath said supply duct 8 to limit the actual travel or displacement of the bottles. These guide rails 9 and 10 are adjustably retained on the pertinent supply duct 8 for optimum adaptation to the parameters of the particular bottles. For mounting or retention of the guide track 1, retaining arms or clamps 11 are provided which are screw-connected to securing members 12 of the compressed-air nozzle ducts 5, 6 in a vertically adjustable manner. Securing members 13 are also disposed on the guide track 1 and likewise permit the guide track to be adjusted, or respectively, permit the guide track to be associated with the conveyor region of the compressed-air nozzle ducts.
As can be seen particularly from Fig. 1 with the bottle illustrated therein, a considerably large spacing exists between the bottle casing and the internal surfaces of the compressedair nozzle ducts 5 and 6, and such a spacing permits bottles of different sizes, or even bottles with thickened portions on the body, to be accommodated without any obstruction.
In such a case, the guide rails 9 and 10 may effect the actual lateral guidance, without the actual conveyor path being constricted in the region of the ducts. A generous spacing also exists between the guide track 1 and the surface 14 of the compressed-air nozzle ducts 5 and 6, such a spacing permitting the air masses to flow away outside of the mouth region of the bottles.
Fig. 2 additionally illustrates the compressed-air feed ducts 15 and 16 which extend from the source of compressed-air 17 to the supply ducts 8 associated with the compressed-air nozzle ducts 5 and 6.
