Abstract

Two panels are butt-joined together edge to edge by a panel fastener consisting of halves (1A, 1B) having respectively a rotatable hook (2) and a fixed pin (3). Each half (1A & 1B) comprises two stamped sheet metal parts joined together face to face at peened securement points (8) arranged around a cavity (11), in which the hook (2) or pin (3) respectively is mounted. Each peened securement point (8) has an opening. At least one of the two halves (1A, 1B) has at least one square opening (10) formed between an end wing (4) and the cavity-defining portion (11). The openings noted above are occupied by foamed and hardened resin which forms the core of the panel and in which the fastener half (1A or 1B) is embedded. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Panel fastener This invention relates to a panel fastener com- prising panel fastener halves, which are to be encastered in butted edge portions of two panels, each of which comprises a pair of opposed facing sheets and a hardened resin core therebetween.
United States patent specification No.
3,671,006 discloses a panel fastener, which comprises panel fastener halves coupled together by a hook plate and a pin provided respectively in the two panel fastener halves.
To withstand the tensile force acting between the two panel fastener halves coupled together and also increase the coupling force between the metal parts and the hardened resin core of the panels, each panel fastener half is provided with an end wing and also with circular apertures or openings formed between the end wing and a cavity-defining portion, in which the hook plate or pin is accommodated. These openings are occupied by foamed and hardened resin of the panel core.
Further, each panel fastener half consists of two stamped sheet metal parts which are welded together by spot welding.
In this method of joining two stamped sheet metal parts, however, the securement points have no opening. This means that the securement points have nothing to contribute to the area of opening to be occupied by the hardened resin of the panel core and hence cannot contribute to the transmission of the coupling force between the metal parts and the panel core. Further, to provide an increased area of opening, the shape of the opening to be occupied by the hardened resin is important.
An object of the invention is to provide a panel fastener, which provides a high coupling force between it and the hardened resin of the panel cores and can withstand a high tensile force.
According to the invention, there is provided a panel fastener, consisting of two panel fastener halves each of which comprises two stamped sheet metal parts joined together face to face, each panel fastener half having an end wing and a cavity-defining portion open at the other end, one of said two panel fastener halves including a hook plate accommodated in the respective cavity-defining portion, the other one of said two panel fastener halves having a pin accommodated in the respective cavity-defining portion, said two stamped sheet metal parts being joined together at peened securement points distributed around the cavity-defining portion, each peened securement point having an opening and at least one of said panel fastener halves having at least one square opening formed between its end wing and its cavity-defining portion.
The invention is further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an elevational view showing one embodiment of panel fastener according to the invention; Figure 2 is a right-hand side view of the panel fastener shown in Fig. 1; Figure 3 is a bottom view of the panel fastener shown in Fig. 1; Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line A-A in Fig. 5; Figure 5 is a sectional plan view showing the panel fastener of Fig. 1 encastered in panels with hardened resin core; Figure 6 is an elevational view of a modification of the panel fastener shown in Fig. 1; Figure 7 is a plan view of the panel fastener shown in Fig. 6; and Figure 8 is a sectional view of a peened securement point of the panel fastener shown in Fig. 1 or 6.
Figs. 1 to 5 illustrate one embodiment of a panel fastener according to the invention. The panel fastener comprises two panel fastener halves 1A and 1B. Each panel fastener half comprises two stamped metal sheet parts jointed together face to face. Each stamped metal sheet part has an end wing of channelshaped sectional profile and a cavity-defining portion 11 open at the other end. The two stamped metal parts of each panel fastener half are jointed together at caulked or penned over securement points 8 (see also Fig. 8) which are formed around the cavity-defining portion 11. A hook plate 2 is rotatably mounted in the cavity-defining portion 11 of the panel fastener half 1A. A pin 3 is mounted in the cavity-defining portion 11 of the other panel fastener half 1 B.
The panel fastener halves 1 A and 1B having the above construction are buried or encastered in butt edge portions of corresponding panels 12A and 12B, each of which comprises a pair of opposed facing sheets 9 and a hardened resin core 5 between the facing sheets 9. The two panels 12A and 12B are couplrd together edge-to-edge by the hook plate 2 and the pin 3. The hook plate 2 is mounted on a cam member or eccentric 6 having a hexagonal hole 6a. The hexagonal hole 6a is aligned with a hole 7 of a sleeve member which is also buried or encased in the panel fastener half 1A.
In this embodiment, the panel fastener half 1A has two square apertures or openings 10 formed between the cavity-defining portion 11 and the end wing 4. Figs. 6 and 7 show a modification of the above embodiment. In this instance, the other panel fastener half 1B also has two square apertures or openings 7 formed between the cavity-defining portion 11 and the end wing 4.
With the above construction, to couple together the butt edges of the two panels 12A and 125, a tool is inserted through the hole 7 of the sleeve and engaged in the hexagonal hole6a of the eccentric 6 and is turned in a direction to swing the free end of the hook plate 2 (clockwise in Fig. 4) out of the cavitydefining portion 11 of the panel fastener half 1 A into the cavity-defining portion of the panel fastener half 1B to be hooked on the pin 3.
By further turning the eccentric 6, the two panels 12A and 12B are drawn towards each other to be tightly coupled together by the hook plate 2 and the pin 3. At this time, the tensile forces exerted on the panel fastener halves are received by the foamed and hardened resin occupying the square openings formed in either one or both of the panel fastener halves. The tensile force is also received by the foamed and hardened resin occupying holes in the peened securement points 8, as shown in Fig. 8.
As has been described in the foregoing, according to the invention the panel fastener is provided with square apertures or openings.
The square opening has an increased area compared with a prior art circular opening having a diameter equal to one side of it, so that the opening can be occupied by an increased quantity of resin. Thus, the coupling force between the fastener and hardened resin can be increased.
In addition, since the peened securement points are provided with holes or openings, the total area of openings is increased to promote the above effect.
