Abstract

A plate 12 or 23 is connected to a surface of the door frame by a fixing member 6 or 26 comprising a head 7 and a shank which passes through the frame and is anchored in the building structure, thereby strengthening the frame. The plate 12 constitutes one leaf of a hinge whose other leaf 3 has a hole 14 through which the head 7 projects into the closed door 1, thereby securing the hinged edge of the closed door against removal if the hinge pin 19 is removed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to doors and door frames This invention relates to doors, door frames, and door hinges, primarily, but not solely for security doors.
In an outward opening door the hinge pins are exposed. It is therefore possible either to remove the hinge pins or to grind off the hinge knuckle so that the door can simply be removed by pivoting it on the lock bolts.
What is therefore desired is a means for preventing removal of the hinged edge of the door from the rebate in the door post.
Such a means may, as is known, comprise a pin and a plate fixed on the door post and the hinged edge of the door, respectively.
When the door is closed the pin enters a hole in the plate and thus prevents removal of the hinged edge from the door frame if the hinged connection is destroyed. However, the device is weak and will, for example, not withstand a violent attack on the door, e.g. with a sledgehammer.
An existing door frame will generally have been fixed to the building structure with nails or screws. Consequently, a violent attack may dislodge the frame, or the frame itself may break down if it is of light construction, as will usually be the case. It would therefore be desirable to be able to strengthen a door frame.
In one aspect the invention provides a device for strengthening a door frame mounted in a building structure, the device comprising a plate which is connected to a surface of the frame by a fixing member comprising a head and a shank which passes through the frame and is anchored in the building structure.
In another aspect the invention provides a device for securing the hinged edge of a closed door, comprising a first plate adapted for connection to the edge surface of the door, a second plate adapted for connection to the surface of a rebate in a door post to which the door is hinged, and a fixing member having a head and a shank which is to pass through the second plate and the door post in order to secure them to the building structure, the first plate having a hole through which the head is to project into the door when the door is closed.
In yet another aspect the invention provides a door hinge comprising a first leaf adapted for connection to the edge surface of a door, a second leaf adapted for connection to the surface of a rebate in a door post, pivotal connection means connecting adjacent longitu dinal edges of the leaves, and a fixing member having a head and a shank which is to pass through the second leaf and the door post in order to secure them to a building structure, the first leaf having a hole through which the head is to project into the door when the door is closed.
Thus, if the pivotal connection is destroyed, the fixing member and the first plate or leaf cooperate to prevent removal of the door from the rebate. There is an additional advantage in that the fixing member, in conjunction with the second plate or leaf will strengthen the door post by connecting it more firmly to the building structure. By fixing the hinge to the building structure the strength of the hinged mounting of the door can be made independent of the strength of the door frame and its fixing. Thus there is no need to remove the frame in order to replace it with a stronger frame and/or to re-fix it more securely.
The fixing member may, for example, be a bolt or a screw or any wall fixing having a head and a shank. The shank may be anchored in the wall in any convenient way, e.g.
by cooperation with an expansible plug or by grouting.
Preferably the shank passes through an annular spacer interposed between the head and the second plate or leaf, to enhance the extent to which the head projects into the door.
The size of the spacer is preferably such that it lies in the hole in the first plate or leaf when the plates or leaves are facing one another and mutually parallel, i.e. when the door is closed. The spacer may be metallic or non-metallic material. It preferably extends into a hole in the second plate or leaf so as to centre the shank in the hole. In order to dissipate impacts applied to the door (e.g. if it is attacked with a sledgehammer), the spacer may comprise resiliently deformable material, e.g. hard rubber, synthetic rubber, or resilient plastics such as nylon.
Preferably, at least two fixing members are provided. The first plate or leaf may be fixed to the door by conventional means, e.g. wood screws, and such means may also be used for fixing the second plate or leaf to the door post in addition to the fixing member(s).
In a preferred embodiment the first and/or second plate or leaf has a flange which is to project into a slot in the door or door post, respectively, at least one side of the flange being in contact over a major part of its area with resiliently deformable material, for dissipating impacts, which material may, for example, be rubber, synthetic rubber, resiliently deformable plastics material such as nylon, a visco-elastic material (e.g. a visco-elastic adhesive), or cork.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the sole Figure is a fragmentary horizontal section through a door and a door post, with a locking device and a hinge.
The hinge illustrated is longer than the conventional door hinge, being more than 10 cm long, preferably at least 30 cm, and most preferably extending over almost the whole height of the door 1 The door 1 is of wood; it may be a security door of laminar constructions, incorporating reinforcing and shock absorbing layers, for example, and is preferably at least 45 mm thick. The door 1 is mounted in a rebate in a wooden door frame, the door be ing hinged to one door post 2. The frame is fixed in a wall or other building structure (e.g.
of concrete, bricks, or building blocks) by any convenient means (e.g. nails).
A first metal plate or leaf 3 of the hinge is connected to the edge surface of the door 1, e.g. by screws (not shown). The leaf 3 has a crimped flange 9 which extends along the whole of its length and projects into a slot in the door; on one side the flange 9 is in contact with a strip 11 of rubber or other resili ently deformable material. The elongate leaf 3 serves to strengthen the edge of the door, resisting breakdown of the edge of the door if subjected to violent attack, impacts being dis sipated by the strip 11.
A pivotal connection between the first leaf 3 and a second metal plate or leaf 12 is provided in the usual way by a hinge pin 19.
The leaf 12 is connected to the surface of a rebate in the door post 2 by means of a wall bolt 6 which passes freely through a hole bored in the post and which is anchored in the building structure (not shown). The bolt 6 is one of a number of similar bolts spaced along the leaf 12. The head 7 of the bolt bears against the leaf 12 via a metal or plastics spacer 8 in the form of a collar having a narrow end 13 which fits in a hole in the leaf 12. When the door 1 is closed (as shown) the spacer 8 lies in a hole 14 in the first leaf 3 and the head 7 is received in a round re cess 16 in the door 1. In this way the bolt 6 anchored to the building structure prevents re moval of the door 1 from the rebate in the door post 2 if the hinge pin 19 is removed or if the pivotal connection is otherwise de stroyed.
The free edge of the leaf 12 has a flange 18 received by a slot 17 in the door post, a strip 20 of rubber or other resiliently deforma ble material being sandwiched between the flange 18 and a wall of the slot 17. The elon gate leaf 12 serves to strengthen the door post, impacts being dissipated by the strip 20.
The edge of the door remote from the hinge is provided with a locking device, as de scribed in my published U.K. patent applica tion GB 2 088 462A, comprising a pivotable, vertically elongate member 21 which engages a flange 22 on a vertically elongate metal plate 23. The plate 23 is connected to the surface of a rebate in the door post 24 by a bolt 26 which passes freely through a hole bored in the post and which is anchored in the building structure. A number of such bolts 26 are spaced along the plate 23. In this case the head 27 of the bolt 26 bears directly against the plate 23 and is sufficiently shallow not to interfere with the pivotable member 21.
The plate 23 has a crimped flange 28 received by a slot in the door post 24 and covered on one side by a strip 29 of rubber or another resiliently deformable material. Beyond the flange the plate 23 has a channel section extension 31 with a timber infill 32.
The extension 31 serves as q secure abutment for the edge of the door 1 and has a facing 33 of rubber or another resiliently deformable material to dissipate impacts.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention. For example, instead of a hexagonal head 7, the bolt 6 may have a round head having a recess or slot (for receiving an Allen key, a Phillips screwdriver, or a conventional screwdriver).
