Abstract

A pannier bag 1 for releasable mounting on a bicycle, motorcycle, or like vehicle, incorporates a light reflector 10 that can be pivoted to project laterally from the bag 1 or vehicle as a warning in darkness for a following vehicle. The pannier bag 1 is also arranged so that it can be used as a conventional carrier bag by the provision of a shoulder strap and is further provided with a number of pockets, pouches and the like e.g. 15 for carrying many items including a lamp 17, bicycle pumps, umbrellas and the like. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to pannier bags The present invention relates to a pannier bag.
The term "pannier bag" is used to describe any form of bag carried on a vehicle which can be removed by the user, generally speaking, the only vehicles though to exclusively on which they are carried are bicyles, motorbikes and the like two and three wheeled vehicles. Usually on motorbikes or bicycles the pannier bag is suspended, in use, from some form of rear carrier. The term "vehicle" in this specification covers not only such bicycles, motorcycles but all similar forms of vehicle.
While there are many such pannier bags on the market there is a need for an improved and efficient design of such a pannier bag that can be relatively easily used and at the same time is not too expensive in use. One of the major problems with many road vehicles is the inadequacy of the lighting and also the poor visibility at night-time of such vehicles. A suitable rearward facing indicator light and/or light reflector would greatly improve the safety of such vehicles in that they would improve the visibility of the vehicle from behind and thus reduce the possibility of impact during darkness from a following vehicle.
The present invention is directed towards providing a pannier bag of the type comprising a bag and means for releasably securing the bag to a vehicle characterised in that the bag includes a light reflector pivotally mounted thereon to pivot from a position against the bag to a position projecting laterally therefrom.
Preferably the light reflector is housed within an open mouthed pocket on the bag.
In another embodiment of the invention an additional lamp pouch for reception of a lamp is provided, the lamp pouch being situated in use on the rear of the pannier bag and having an aperture to allow the lamp to shine out of the pouch.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. lisa perspective view of a pannier bag according to the invention prior to fixing a carrying strap thereto, Fig. 2 is a front view of the pannier bag, Fig. 3 is a rear view, Fig. 4 is a left-hand side view, Fig. 5 is a right-hand side view, Fig. 6 is a top view, and Fig. 7 is a bottom view.
Referring to the drawings there is provided a pannier bag indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 comprising a main bag 2 having a lid or cover 3 sealed by a zip fastener (not shown). The cover 3 has a carrying handle 4. The main bag 2 has secured thereto a pair of hooks 5 and two metal eyes 6 for reception of clips 7 of a shoulder strap 8.
A light reflector 10 is mounted on a pivot pin 11 within an open mouthed pocket 12 on the main bag 2. In use, the light reflector 10 can be pivoted in the direction of the arrow A to project outwardly from the pannier bag 1 and in the reverse direction to be completely housed within the pocket 12. A pouch 15 having a cover 16 is provided for reception of a lamp and ineludes an aperture 17 into which a lamp in the drawing identified by the reference numeral 18 may be mounted.
A further pair of pouches 19 are provided. A further pouch indicated generally by the reference numeral 20 for storage of a bicycle pump, umbrella orthe like article, the drawing showing a bicycle pump 21 is provided. The pouch 20 comprises a lower open mouthed pocket 22 and a pair of pump embracing straps 23 and 24.
In use, the pannier bag 1 may be suspended on any suitable frame of a vehicle by means of the hooks 5 and may be lifted on and off by the strap 4. If it is desired to carry the pannier bag 1 over ones shoulder it is possible to use the shoulder strap 8.
The usefulness of the light reflector 10 housed within the pocket 12 will be readily appreciated. It will be appreciated that the invention provides not just simply a pannier bag but a useful carrier bag and that this is the main advantage of the present invention namely, that it can be used as an ordinary carrier bag or as a relatively permanent pannier bag.
It will be noted that the light reflector 10 is in the form of an arm having a disc on its outer end.
Generally speaking only the disc will be of light reflective material but needless to say, the arm may also be of light reflective material. Preferably, the dimensions of the arm are such that in use when projecting beyond the bag the disc also projects beyond the vehicle thus, as it were, providing an indication to following motorists of the extent to which the vehicles projects across their path.
It is also envisaged that instead of a lamp pouch having a slit that the lamp pouch may have a translucent rearwardlyfacing wall to allow the lamp to shine out of the pouch. Since most lamps have clear glass lenses it is envisaged that in certain cases the translucent wall may be coloured. Ideally, this colour should be red which is the usual colour used for rear lights on vehicles.
Further, it is envisaged that the pannier bag may include a pair of shoulder straps to allow the bag to be used as a rucksack. The shoulder straps may be permanently affixed thereto, or detachably secured by means of additional hooks, not shown on the drawings.
The pannier may be made of any suitable material such as a nylon polyurethane material.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments here and before described but may be varied in constructional details.
