Abstract
Alkali metal compounds, recovering from liquors containing organic substances. Organic matter in alkaline liquors such as cellulose boiling liquors and mercerizing liquors, are destroyed by heating with chlorine oxygen compounds or nitrogen-oxygen compounds such as chlorates, nitrates and nitrites under pressure in the presence of catalyst such as the heavy metals, their oxides and salts. The solution may be made to trickle down through the catalyst in a tower-like autoclave. Examples describe the treatment of cellulose liquors at 140-180 DEG C. with sodium chlorate and sodium nitrate respectively in presence of copper wire netting and a mixture of carbon and iron oxide respectively. Oxygen may be introduced to facilitate the reaction, and the alkali carbonate produced may be caustified.
