Abstract
A male threaded member (1) has a splined extension projecting beyond the nut (2). A bell (3) having two anti-rotation forms such as internal splines, is moved axially so that the smaller diameter spline engages the splined shaft extension and the larger diameter form engages the nut (2). The bell (3) may be retained axially by a spring ring, circlip (4), or spit pin. The smaller spline prevents rotation of the bell (3) relative to the screwed male member (1) and the larger form prevents rotation of the nut 2 (which may be a standard hexagon nut) relative to the bell (3). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Metso vernier-lock fastener
This invention relates to screwed FASTEN
ERS.
Threaded fasteners are a fundamental element in a wide range of engineering applications, both static and dynamic.
The present invention is a form of Positively
Locking system for nuts on threaded elements.
The principle of this positive locking system is graphically illustrated in Fig.
Principles of Metso Vernier-Lock System:
The male threaded member (I) has a splined extension. A bell (3) having two internal splines or anti-rotation forms, is assembled axially, the smaller diameter spline on the shaft extension and the larger diameter on the nut (2). The bell (3) may be retained axially by a spring ring, circlip (4), split pin or any other conventional means.
The smaller spline prevents rotation of the bell (3) relative to the screwed male member and the larger form prevents rotation of the nut (which may be a standard hexagon nut) relative to the bell (3).
1. A mechanism for locking a nut on a threaded spindle, bolt, screw, or fastener which has on the non-ciamping side an antirotation form and a groove onto which, after tightening the nut, is fitted axially a locking bell with two co-axial internal anti-rotation forms, in turn retained axially by a clip or circlip with the two anti-rotation forms preventing relative movement between the parts thus giving a high integrity locking mechanism for threaded fastenings.
