Abstract

A mounting arrangement for mounting an engine driven component 12 such as a fuel pump on an engine structure 10 comprises an annular member 15 which is bolted to the engine structure. The member 15 and the body of the component 12 define annular rims 20, 16 which can be clamped together by a clamping band 25 and the member and the body of the component are held against relative movement by a dowel 23. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Mounting arrangement This invention relates to a mounting arrangement for mounting and locating an engine driven component such as a fuel injection pump, on an engine structure, the component having a drive shaft which is connected in use, to a rotary part of the engine so as to be driven thereby.
The conventional arrangement for mounting and locating a component such as a fuel pump is to provide a flange on the body of the pump about the drive shaft and to form in the flange a plurality of apertures which extend through the flange, the axes of the apertures being substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the shaft. The flange is secured by means of bolts passing through the apertures respectively to the casing of the engine, the shaft extending through an opening in the casing and carrying for example a gear wheel which engages a gear wheel driven by the engine. The flange which may have ears in which the apertures are formed, has to be large enough to allow insertion of the bolts through the aperture without interference with the adjacent body portion of the pump. Moreover, the casing of the engine must be sized in an appropriate manner. In some forms of pump the body adjacent the flange can be relatively wide where for example the shaft is connected to or has mounted on it, a high lift cam. This results in the flange having a large size and this can cause problems in providing sufficient room on the casing of the engine.
The object of the present invention is to provide a mounting arrangement in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention a mounting arrangement for the purpose specified comprises an annular member through which in use said drive shaft extends, said member defining an annular rim portion, a complementary rim portion defined on the body which when the member is assembled to the component body are held in engagement with each other by a clamping band extending about the rim portions, locating means extending between the member and component body to locate same against relative angular movement about the axis of the shaft, and an aperture or apertures formed in said member, said aperture or apertures extending substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft and being located inwardly of said rim portion, the aperture or apertures in use receiving a bolt or bolts whereby the member can be secured to the engine structure prior to engaging said locating means and said clamping ring.
An example of a mounting arrangement in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a part sectional side elevation of a fuel injection pump mounted upon an engine casing. Referring to the drawing there is shown a portion 10 of an engine casing in which is defined a cylindrical aperture 11.
There is also shown a portion 12 of an injection pump body in which is mounted a rotary drive shaft 13 which extends to within the engine casing and in use, has a gear wheel mounted thereon for engagement with a gear wheel driven by the associated engine.
The body 12 defines a hollow cylindrical extension 19 within which is mounted a bearing 17 for the shaft and outwardly of the bearing, an oil seal not shown, the oil seal being retained in position by a circlip located in a groove 18. The body also defines an annular rim portion 16.
In order to mount and locate the body 12 there is provided an annular member 15 which defines a rim portion 20, complementary to the rim portion 16 the two rim portions 16 and 20 when the member is assembled to the body, lying adjacent each other. The member 1 5 is located about the extension 19 and it has an axially extending annular flange 21 which locates within the aperture 11. The member 15 is secured to the casing 10 by means of a bolt or bolts which extend through an aperture or apertures 22 in the member, the apertures being positioned inwardly of the rim portion. In addition, the apertures are provided with countersunk portions so that the heads of the bolts will lie below the radial contacting surfaces of the member 15 and the body.
In order to prevent relative angular movement of the member and body about the axis of rotation of the shaft, a locating means conveniently in the form of a dowel 23 extends between the member and body and in order to secure the member and body in assembled relationship, a split clamping band 24 extends about the rims 16 and 20 and can be secured by means of a pinch bolt or bolts. The rims 1 6 and 20 have outer surfaces which are tapered and the band is shaped in a complementary manner so that when it is tightened the rims are urged into engagement with each other.
In order to mount the pump on the casing the member 15 is first secured by means of the bolts to the and casing 10. The cylindrical portion 19 is then passed through the opening in the member 15 and the dowel engaged.
The clamping band is then secured in position and this represents final assembly of the pump to the engine casing.
The mounting arrangement described has an overall size which is reduced as compared with a similar arrangement where a flange with apertures would be provided on the pump body. In addition, because of the reduced size the design of the engine casing to support the pump is facilitated.
