Abstract
A mounting arrangement for an engine driven component 12, e.g. a fuel injection pump, on an engine structure 10 comprises a pair of annular members 14, 15 which are bolted to the component 12 and the engine structure 10 respectively. The members define annular rims 16, 20 which can be clamped together by a clamping band 24 and the members are held against relative movement by a dowel 23. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Mounting arrangement
This invention relates to a mounting arrangement for mounting and locating an engine drive component such as a fuel injection pump, on an engine structure, the component having a drive shaft which is connected in use, to a rotary part of the engine so as to be driven thereby.
The conventional arrangement for mounting and locating a component such as a fuel pump is to provide a flange on the body of the pump about the drive shaft and to form in the flange a plurality of apertures which extend through the flange, the axes of the apertures being substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the shaft. The flange is secured by means of bolts passing through the apertures respectively to the casing of the engine, the shaft extending through an opening in the casing and carrying for example a gearwheel which engages a gear wheel driven by the engine. The flange which may have ears in which the apertures are formed, has to be large enough to allow insertion of the bolts through the aperture without interference with the adjacent body portion of the pump. Moreover, the casing of the engine must be sized in an appropriate manner. In some forms of pump the body adjacent the flange is connected to or has mounted on it, a high lift cam. This results in the flange having a large size and this can cause problems in providing sufficient room on the casing of the engine.
The object of the present invention is to provide a mounting arrangement in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention a mounting arrangement for the purpose specified comprises first and second annular members through which in use said drive shaft extends, said members defining rim portions which when the members are assembled, are held in engagement with each other by a clamping band extending about the rim portion5, locating means extending between the members to locate the members against relative angular movement about the axis of the shaft, and apertures formed in said members, said apertures extending substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft and being located inwardly of said rim portions, the apertures in use receiving bolts whereby the members can be secured to the body of the component and the engine structure
respectively prior to engaging said locating means and said clamping ring.
An example of a mounting arrangement in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which
is a part sectional side elevation of a fuel injection
pump mounted upon an engine casing. Referring to the drawing there is shown a portion 10 of an enqine
casing in which is defined a cylindrical aperture I.
There is also shown a portion 12 of an injection
pump body in which is mounted a rotary drive shaft
13 which extends t( within the casing and in use,
has a gear wheel mounted thereon for engagement with a gear wheel driven by the associated engine.
In order to mount and locate the body 12 on the casing 10 a pair of members 14, 15 are provided.
The member 14 is of annular form and defines a rim 16. The member 14 conveniently serves to support a bearing 17 for the shaft and outwardly of the bearing, an oil seal not shown, the oil seal being retained in position by a circlip located in a groove 18. The bearing and oil seal are located within a hollow cylindrical extension 19 of the member 14 which locates within the member 15. The member 15 is also of annular form and also defines a rim portion 20, the two rim portions 16 and 20 when the members are in assembled relationship, lying adjacent each other. The member 15 is located about the extension 19 and it has an axially extending annular flange 21 which locates within the aperture 11.The members 14 and 15 are secured to the pump body and the casing 10 respectively by means of bolts which extend through apertures 22 in the members, the apertures being positioned inwardly of the rim portions. In addition, the apertures are provided with countersunk portions so that the heads of the bolts will lie below the radial contacting surfaces of the members 14 and 15.
In order to prevent relative angular movement of the members about the axis of rotation of the shaft, a locating means conveniently in the form of a dowel 23 extends between the members and in order to secure the two members in assembled relationship, a split clamping band 24 extends about the rims 16 and 20 and can be secured by means of a pinch bolt or bolts. The rims 16 and 20 have outer surfaces which are tapered and the band is shaped in a complementary manner so that when it is tightened the rims are urged into engagement with each other.
In order to mount the pump on the casing the members are first of all secured by means of the bolts to the body 12 and casing 10. The cylindrical portion 19 is then passed through the opening in the member 15 and the dowel engaged. The clamping band is then secured in position and this represents final assembly of the pump to the engine casing.
By the arrangement described the overall size of the members is reduced as compared with a similar arrangement where a flange with apertures would be provided on the pump. In addition, because of the reduced size the design of the engine casing to support the pump is facilitated.
1. A mounting arrangement for mounting and locating an engine driven component such as a fuel injection pump, on an engine structure, the component having a drive shaft which is connected in use, to a rotary part of the engine so as to be driven thereby, the mounting arrangement comprising first and second annular members through which in use said drive shaft extends, said members defining rim portions which when the members are assembled, are held in engagement with each other by a clamping band extending about the rim portions, locating means extending between the members to locate the members against relative angular movement about the axis of the shaft, and apertures formed in said members,
