Abstract

A manhole cover has at least one corner region (3) which defines a hollow chamber (7) within which an internally threaded hollow member (9) is secured in coaxial alignment with upper and lower apertures (11,13) formed in the corner region (3). In use the manhole cover (1) is located on a supporting frame (19) and a bolt (15) is passed with clearance through the upper aperture (11), the hollow member (9) and the lower aperture (13). The bolt (15) is screwed into the supporting frame (19) thus locking the manhole cover (1) in position. With the or each bolt (15) removed a threaded tool can be positively engaged in the threaded bore (17) in hollow member (9) so that the manhole cover can be positively and safely lifted off the supporting frame (19). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to manhole covers and their supporting frames The present invention relates to a manhole cover and a manhole cover in combination with its sup porting frame.
In particular the present invention relates to a manhole cover of the type which has a recess which is filled with blocks or other material to match the prepared surface surrounding the man hole. Thus only the upper surface of the outer pe rimeter of the manhole cover is visible to the eye when the cover is in use; the cover therefore blending with the aesthetics of the area.
Manhole covers of the above type have corner regions in which a small hole is provided, it being thus possible to lift the manhole by first inserting a small tool which can engage the undersurface of the corner region into which it is inserted. This tool is however a loose fit in the hole and can become detached from the cover during lifting. Further, if the manhole cover is to be locked to its supporting frame, then appropriate locking means are built into the recess of the cover. This reduces the area of the recess which matches the surrounding re gion, and thus detrimentally affects the aesthetics of the area.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a manhole cover which can be safely lifted and which can be simply locked to its supporting frame; the locking means being such as to main tain the maximum possible area for said recess.
According to the present invention there is pro vided a manhole cover having a corner region through which an at least partially threaded bore extends.
According to a further aspect of the present in vention there is provided a manhole cover in com bination with a supporting frame, the manhole cover having a corner region through which an at least partially threaded bore extends, a bolt ex tending through said bore and being screwed into a further threaded bore in the said supporting frame.
Thus, by virtue of the present invention a threaded tool can be screwed into the at least par tially threaded bore to enable the manhole cover to be positively and safely lifted, and in accord with the further aspect of the present invention, the same bore is used to bolt the cover to the frame.
The corner region is thus adapted both for safe lift ing and for positive locking without requiring sepa rate locking means which can detract from the aesthetics of the installation.
In a preferred embodiment of the present inven tion the manhole cover and supporting frame are rectangular and each corner region has a hollow chamber within which an internally threaded hol low tube is welded in coaxial alignment with upper and lower apertures fdrmed in the corner region.
The upper aperture is preferably large enough to allow the head of the bolt to pass through and the upper end of the tube is likewise recessed so that the bolt when screwed to the supporting frame, is flush or recessed with respect to the upper surface of the manhole cover. The bolt(s) preferably engage in a threaded tube welded to the frame to thus lock the cover in position. If a cover is not to be bolted to the supporting frame then the upper apertures of each corner region can be closed by, for example, plastic plugs which may be removed for lifting.
The present invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a manhole cover and supporting frame according to the present invention, in spaced apart relationship; and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of a corner region of the cover and frame of Figure 1, locked together.
A rectangular manhole cover (1) is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the cover (1) having four corner regions (3) and a recess which is, by way of example, filled with an arrangement of blocks (5) to match the surrounding area.
As best seen in Figure 2, each corner region (3) defines a hollow chamber (7) within which a hollow tube (9) is welded in alignment with an upper aperture (11) and a lower aperture (13) in the walls of said chamber (7). The tube (9) is recessed at its upper end to receive the head of a bolt (15), and is partially threaded at (17) for engagement with a complimentarily threaded lifting tool (not shown).
A supporting frame (19) for the manhole cover (1) is generally rectangular and as best seen in Figure 2, a threaded tube (21) is welded to the frame (19) in alignment with the said upper and lower apertures (11, 13) of the cover (1). Thus with the manhole cover (1) located in position in the supporting frame 19, (as shown in Figure 2), the bolt (15) can be inserted through the tube (9) and screwed into the threaded tube (21) welded to the frame (19), to thus lock the cover (1) to the frame (19). The head of the bolt (15) engages in the recess at the upper end of tube (9) and is thus flush or slightly recessed with respect to ground level.
As evident from the recess (23) on the head of bolt (15), the bolt (15) can be tightened or released using an Allen key. Alternative bolt designs can of course be utilised.
In use, the bolts (15) can be removed from each corner region (3), to release the manhole cover (1) to enable the cover to be positively and safely lifted. Thus both lifting and locking means are provided in the corner regions so that the maximum area is available for the said blocks (5) to thus maximise the aesthetic blending of the manhole cover (1) to its surroundings.
If the manhole cover (1) is not to be locked to its supporting frame (19) the plastic plugs (not shown) may be used to aesthetically close the upper aperture (11) of each corner region (3). These plugs can of course be easily removed when the manhole cover has to be lifted.
