Abstract
A boom end fitting, has a body 6 which is used in conjunction with a collar 3 for the purpose of having a quick connection for a boom to the mast on a sailboard, by way of two hooks 5 on body 6 hook up onto lugs 4 on the collar 3 wherein the body 6 is fastened to the boom and the collar 3 anchorable to the mast. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvement in sailboard boom ends
This invention relates to the front boom end fitting on a sailboard.
It is known to have a boom end fitting at the front of a boom which is a apparatus in which a sail is set, said boom is tied to the mast at the front boom end. This is where the problem occurs.
With the conventional boom end, said boom end has to be tied to the mast and this has the tendency to become loose which results in the loss of control of the sailboard, and the boom sliding down the mast, in some cases by trying to get the boom end tight on the mast, so said boom end does not become loose, the mast is crushed in the efford by the rope. This invention eliminates all these problems.
In this invention the boom end fitting is made in two parts, consisting of a collar which is fastened to the mast, two flanged lugs are provided on said collar for the boom end body to hook up onto, by way of two hooks provided on said boom end body. Both the flanged lugs on the collar and the hooks on the boom end body are opposed to each other, and are positioned on the port and stuboard side in relation to the sailboard. When the boom end body, which is connected to the boom, is hooked up onto the collar, which is fastened to the mast, provides a pivital connection which allowes the use of any shape sail and provides a very fast connection for the boom which is very stable requiring no rope to tie the boom to the mast and eliminating all the problems associated with the conventional type boom end.The collar can be manufactured with the lugs centrally positioned and the collar fastened to the mast by two or more screws through the adjustment slot in the collar.
The other method is to have the flanged lugs positioned at the front of the mast hole in the collar where the lugs are actually a special manufactured bolt which also tightens the collar onto the mast.
This invention will now be described by way of examples with reference to accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the boom end body and the col lar assembled on a mast;
Figure 2 shows the collar with centrally positioned lugs;
Figure 3 shows the collar with front positioned lugs, which is a specially manufactured bolt.
Figure 4 shows the boom end body which pivotally hooks up onto the collar;
In the drawings; in Figure 1, 2 is a mast onto which collar 3 is fastened with bolts through holes 7, said collar has two flanged lugs 4 provided on it, said lugs 4 are opposed to each other. The two lugs 4 are there for the boom end body 6 to hook up onto by way of two hooks 5 provided on said boom end body 6. When boom end body 6 is hooked up onto the collar 3 by lugs 4 and hook 5 the two parts provide a pivotal, very stable and controllable boom end fitting which will pivotally adjust to any shape sail without restriction of movement, eliminating the use of ropes for the purpose of tieing the boom to the mast 2 and eliminating all the problems associated with it, providing for very fast rigging up, as the collar 3 is left fastened to the mast at all times.The collar 3 can be manufactured with the lugs 4 centrally positioned on collar 3 as shown figure 2 and fastened to the mast 2 with screws through holes 7 which pass through collar adjustment slot 8.
The other method is to position the lugs 4 in front of the mast hole 9 as shown figure 3. In this method the lugs 4 are actually a special manufactured bolt 10 which acts as the lugs 4 and also tighten the collar 3 onto the mast 2.
1. A boom end fitting for attachment to a mast and the like comprising, a collar member in a form of a split ring having a pair of opposed flanged lugs centrally or likewise positioned, with bolt holes passing horizontally through the terminating ends of the collar, a hooked member having a pair of horizontally opposed extending hooks, the said member terminating with two opposed tube ends for the boom tubing to fit into. The said hooked member and the collar member pivotally connect together, whereby in use, the hooked member is hooked up onto the opposing lugs on the collar, and the assembly anchorable to a mast.
2. A boom end fitting as in claim 1, wherein the hook portion is integral with the boom end body.
3. A boom end fitting as in claim 1, wherein the flanged lugs are integral with the collar member.
4. A boom end fitting as in claim 1-3, wherein the flanged lugs are seperate to the collar member.
5. A boom end fitting as in claim 1-4, wherein the pivotal connection is a loose one.
6. A boom end fitting substantially as herein before described with reference to accompanying drawing.
