Abstract

Roller shutter comprises a shutter curtain 12 formed of articulated laths, a pair of guides 14, 15, and a central roller 18 on which the curtain is to be wound having an outer tube 24 and an inner shaft 22 with spring tensioning means fixed therebetween. The inner shaft 22 is operatively connected to a drive mechanism and to the outer tube by ratchet and pawl, whereby the spring means can be pretensioned by relative rotation so that tension between them, and thereby on the curtain, remains substantially constant irrespective of the degree of opening or closing of the curtain. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Constant tension device This invention relates to shutter curtains, and in particularto horizontally operating escalator type shutter curtains.
Shutter curtains in use at present comprise a central roller, which is spring loaded, and a shutter curtain of articulated laths attached thereto. The shutter curtain is opened and closed bya drive wheel operatively connected to a drive motor. When closing the shutter curtain, rotation ofthe drive wheel unwinds the articulated laths from the roller and a tension is induced in the spring. This tension progressively increases as the length of shutter curtain unwound from the roller increases. This method, however, requires a powerful motor to overcome the spring and in practice the maximum length of shutter curtain able to be unwound is about 20 feet.If the spring is omitted or is too weak, when the motor is reversed in orderto open the shutter, it is found thatthe articulated laths often buckle and aretherefore notwound on tothe central roller properly or may jam completely.
The invention seeks to provide a simple and convenientform of shutter curtain which overcomes or reduces the above disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided acurtainofthe roller shutter type intended for use in horizontally operating escalators which comprises a shutter curtain formed of articulated laths, a pair of shutter guides, a central roller on which the curtain is to be wound, an innershaft, and a drive mechanism operatively connected to the curtain characterised in thatthe central roller comprises an outertu be and an inner shaft with spring tensioning means fixed therebetween, the inner shaft being operatively connected to the drive mechanism whereby the spring means can be pretensioned by rotation ofthe outer tube relative to the inner shaft and, in operation, the tension between the outertu be and inner shaft, and thereby on the curtain, remains substantially constant irrespective ofthe degree of opening or closing of the curtain.
Preferably the inner shaft carries ratchet means at one end thereof whereby, by means of a pawl carried on the outertube (or fixed in relation thereto), the spring means can be pretensioned and the tension retained whilethevarious connections are made. The inner shaft is preferably connected to the drive means by means of a drive sprocket and chain arrangement.
The roller may be driven by an electric drive motor being operatively engaged to a drive wheel engaging the curtain so as to open or close the curtain. This drive wheel is preferably connected to the drive sprocket of the innershaft by means of a drive sprocket on a shaft driven bythemotorconnectedtothechain.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a end view of an apparatus in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is a partial plan view of same.
Referring to the drawings, a roller shutter apparatus 10 has a shutter curtain 12 having shutter guides 14,15 at either side. The shutter curtain 12 is wound on to a central roller 18 by means of a drive wheel 20. The central roller comprises an inner shaft 22 and an outer tube 24. The drive wheel 20 is on a shaft 26 connected to a drive motor (not shown) and the sprockets thereof interengage with the laths of the shutter curtain 12 to drive it.
In the embodiment shown, a helical spring (not shown) is located in between the inner shaft 22 and the outertube 24. One end of this spring is fixed to the inner shaft 22 and the other end thereof is fixed to the outer tube 24.
The inner shaft 22 carries, at one end thereof, a ratchet 28 and a drive sprocket 30. A pawl 32 connected to the outer tube 24 may be brought into operative engagement with the ratchet 28. A drive chain 34 connects the sprocket 30 with a driven sprocket 36 on the drive shaft 26.
The outer tube 24 and inner shaft 22 are firstly rotated relative to one another and this induces a tension in the helical spring. The tension is directly proportional to the number of rotations. The ratchet 28 and pawl 32 mechanism lock the two against unwinding. The system is rotated an arbitrary number oftimesto induce a certain amountoftension in the spring but in practive it is found that eight rotations is satisfactory for most purposes. When the spring has the desired tension the chain 34 is positioned between the sprockets 30 and 36 after which the pawl 32 is dispensed with.When the drive motor operates to close the shutter curtain 12, the chain 34 ensures that the inner shaft 22 is rotated atthe sae rate as the outer tube 24. Consequentiallythe amount of tension in the helical spring remains substantially constant th rough- out the operation.
In reverse process, i.e. when the drive motor is reversed to open the shutter 12, the constanttension in the spring prevents buckling ofthe articulated laths and ensures a tight roll.
One advantage of the above invention is that the spring does not limit the length ofshuttercurtain which can be used, because the system is notworking against an increasing force. The spring can be set at the minimum tension necessary to prevent buckling of the laths.
Another advantage is that a shorter spring and a less powerful motor may be employed which clearly enables the device to be manufactured more economically.

Referring to the drawings, a roller shutter apparatus 10 has a shutter curtain 12 having shutter guides 14,15 at either side. The shutter curtain 12 is wound on to a central roller 18 by means of a drive wheel 20. The central roller comprises an inner shaft 22 and an outer tube 24. The drive wheel 20 is on a shaft 26 connected to a drive motor (not shown) and the sprockets thereof interengage with the laths of the shutter curtain 12 to drive it. In the embodiment shown, a helical spring (not shown) is located in between the inner shaft 22 and the outertube 24. One end of this spring is fixed to the inner shaft 22 and the other end thereof is fixed to the outer tube 24. The inner shaft 22 carries, at one end thereof, a ratchet 28 and a drive sprocket 30. A pawl 32 connected to the outer tube 24 may be brought into operative engagement with the ratchet 28. A drive chain 34 connects the sprocket 30 with a driven sprocket 36 on the drive shaft 26. 2. A curtain as claimed in claim 1 in which the inner shaft carries ratchet means at one end thereof and the outertube carries a corresponding pawl whereby the spring means can be pretensioned.
3. Acurtain as claimed in eitherofclaims 1 or2 in which the inner shaft is connected to the drive means by means of a drive sprocket and chain arrangement
4. A curtain as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 in which the roller is driven by an electric drive motor operatively engaged to a drive wheel engaging the curtain so asto open or close the curtain.
5. A curtain as claimed in claim 4 in which the drive wheel is connected to the drive sprocket of the inner shaft by means of a drive sprocket on a shaft driven by the motor connected to the chain.
6. A roller shutter curtain substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
