Abstract
217,154. Ellis, O. A. Jan. 16, 1924. Ball-and-ring mills.-A crushing-mill comprises an annular trough or .runway 2, Fig. 3, in which balls 1 roll, the inner portion of the trough having a surface substantially tangential to the balls and a saddle 4 resting on the balls being free to move laterally substantially in all directions. The trough 2 is formed in sections bolted together and is fitted with a liner 17 preferably formed in sections and secured by means of bolts having tapering heads which seat in countersunk recesses 15 adjacent the edges of the liner. The saddle 4, preferably formed in sections connected by flanged joints, is rotated by means of a belt passing round a pulley 5 secured at its lower edge to the saddle. Weights are placed' on a platform 21 inside the pulley to give the desired crushing- pressure to the balls, and a central feed-hopper and shoot 19 extend down through the pulley and terminate below the table 21. A bracket 13 secured to the upper edge of the pulley periodically operates the feeding-mechanism, causing it to deliver the material to be ground into the shoot 19. A flaring wall 7 fitted with screens 8 surrounds the trough 2. The curvature of the outer portion of the liner 17 conforms substantially to that of the balls 1, and the under surface of the saddle 4 is preferably formed in the same way. The balls are preferably hollow and are formed with diametrically-opposed openings 22, Fig. 4, lined with sleeves 23 and closed by screw-plugs 24. When transporting the mill, a rod is passed through the openings 22 and held at its ends in a frame to which a chain or other haulage means is attached. To counteract the tendency of the driving-belt to pull the saddle out of centre, an endless anchor belt may pass around the pulley 5 and around a fixed idlerpulley carried in a bracket secured to a support.
