Abstract

In a spray nozzle of the kind used to dispense a fine spray of liquid comprises a body (2) into which a container for the liquid may be inserted, and a housing (8) provided with passages (10, 12) through which liquid dispensed from the container in caused to flow from the outlet as a fine spray, the housing is formed separately from the body, the housing and body being provided with securing formations (20, 22) which enable the housing readily to be secured to the body by e.g. adhesive or welding. In this manner the body may be moulded by the use of injection moulding tools which are relatively simple and relatively inexpensive, and the housing may be manufactured at a relatively lower injection moulding pressure, by the use of multi-impression moulds. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Spray Nozzles This invention is concerned with improvements relating to spray nozzles, particularly of the kind (hereinafter referred to as being of the kind specified) as are used to dispense a fine spray of a liquid.
Such spray nozzles are used in (e.g.) the dispensing of an inhalent, but may be used to dispense other liquids, such as perfume.
A A conventional spray nozzle of the kind specified is illustrated in Figure 1 of the accompanying draw ings, comprising a body 2 into which a container for the liquid may be inserted, the body providing an outlet portion 6 which extends at a large acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the body. Within the body a housing 8 is provided, which provides passages 10, 12 through which liquid dispensed from the container is caused to flow from the outlet portion as a fine spray, (see also Figure 2).
The production of such a conventional spray nozzle by an injection moulding process is compli cated and expensive, and Figure 1 illustrates a part of a multi-core mould assembly used in the manufactu re of conventional spray nozzles of this kind. As can be seen, the mould assembly is complicated, and expensive to manufacture. In addition, the mould elements which define the passages, and which are necessary small and relatively elongate, are prone to deflection or damage, and it is thus necessary to restrict the rate at which plastics moulding material is injected into the mould cavity, which increases the cycle time and further adds to the cost of manufacture of the articles.
According to this invention there is provided a spray nozzle of the kind specified, comprising a body having an outlet portion and a housing within the body which provides passages through which liquid dispensed from a container in the body flows from the outlet portion as a fine spray, wherein the housing is formed as a separate part and is secured within the body.
Thus the body may comprise a securing formation adapted to cooperate with the securing formation on the housing, enabling the housing readily to be secured to the body by e.g. adhesives or welding.
Preferably the securing formations are so arranged as to ensure that the housing when mounted on the body is in a correct orientation relative to the body.
Conveniently a stem extends in the body generally axially thereof, over which an aperture in the hous ing may be placed.
In this manner the body may be moulded by the use of injection moulding tools which are relatively simple and relatively inexpensive. In addition, the moulding may be carried out at higher injection pressures, reducing the cycle time significantly and thus increasing utilisation of the equipment. The housing may be manufactured at relatively lower injection moulding pressures, but being small in size may be manufactured by the use of multiimpression moulds.
A spray nozzle which is a preferred embodiment of this invention is illustrated in Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings, similar numerals with the suffix a being used to indicate parts corresponding to those illustrated in Figure 1 and 2.
As may be seen, the body is provided with securing means afforded by a stem 20 of rectangular cross-section, over which a complementary aperture 22 in the housing may be fitted, these parts being secured together (for example) by a small quantity of adhesive previously inserted into the aperture 22. If desired, the stem 20 and aperture 22 may be so shaped as to ensure that the housing may be mounted on th stem in only one, orientation of the housing.

Claims (1)

1. A spray nozzle of the kind specified, comprising a body having an outlet portion and a housing within the body which provides passages through which fluid dispensed from a container in the body flow from the outlet portion as a fine spray, wherein the housing is formed as a separate part and is secured within the body.
2. A spray nozzle according to Claim 1 wherein the body comprises a securing formation adapted to cooperate with a securing formation on the housing.
3. A spray nozzle according to Claim 2 wherein the securing formations are secured together by adhesive orweldings.
4. A spray nozzle according to one of Claims 2 and 3 wherein the securing formations are so arranged as to ensure that the housing when mounted on the body is in a correct orientation relative to the body.
5. A spray nozzle according to any one of Claims 2, 3 and 4wherein the securing formations comprise a stem extends in the body generally axial thereof, and an aperture in the housing, which may be positioned over the stem.
7. A spray nozzle according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the housing is manufactured at a lower injection pressure than the body.
8. A spray nozzle constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
9. Any novel feature or novel combination of features as hereinbefore described and/or shown in the accompanying drawings.
