Abstract

A radio opaque material such as an adhesive or coating material comprises a radio opaque filler, such as barium sulphate, a coupling agent and a polymeric material, such as a hot melt adhesive.

Description

SPECIFICATION Radio opaque materials This invention relates to radio opaque materials.
Radio opacity is normally imparted to surgical dressings and other fabric products by interweaving of fibres filled with barium sulphate. This involves the separate manufacture of highly filled radio opaque fibres which may be difficult, and their inclusion in the weaving process.
Highly filled fibres have been found to be liable to fragment during weaving or subsequent finishing operations.
According to the present invention a radio opaque adhesive substance comprises a polymeric material a radio opaque filler and a coupling agent.
The term "adhesive substance" used in this specification encompasses substances which adhere to substrates including hot melt adhesives and other substances used to bond two or more solids so that they act or can be used as a single piece. The term "adhesive" also encompasses substances which may be applied to substrates and which adhere thereto but which do not adhere to additional substrates after application, for example coating materials such as paints or inks.
Radio opaque adhesive substances in accordance with this invention have wide applications and confer considerable advantages over the previously known use of radio opaque fibres. The need for drawing into fibres is avoided. Furthermore the possibility of unravelling of the fabric is avoided. The adhesive materials may be used in non-fibrous materials, for example by application to solid objects such as surgical instruments. Details of the advantages conferred by this invention may be evident from the following description of preferred aspects of the invention.
The radio opaque filler is preferably barium sulphate although other barium compounds or lead compounds may be employed. The filler may be finely powered. Alternatively a particulate filler may be used to minimise inpediment to the adhesive properties of the product.
The coupling agent may be selected from the many which are known to those skilled in the art. Tutanium-containing coupling agents have been found to be particularly appopriate. Silanes may be used alternatively. Preferred silanes includes vinyl triethoxysilane, vinyl tris(2-methoxyethoxy) silane, ','-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, fl-(3 ,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyl trimethoxysilane, glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane, ;aminopropyl triethoxysilane and N-fl-(aminoethyl)-;'-aminopro- pyl trimethoxysilane. The silanes disclosed in U.S. patent specification No. 371537 1 or by McFarren, Sanderson & Schappell, Polymer Engineering and Science, January 1977, Volume 17, No. 1, page 46, may also be used.Chlorinated paraffins such as Chlorez 700 (Kenrich Petrochemicals Inc.) may also be used.
Preferred embodiments of the invention include one or more titanate coupling agents. Isopropyl trialkanoyl titanates are especially preferred. Isopropyl triisostearoyl titanate has been found to be particularly effective. Alternatively, isopropyl tridodecylbenzenesulphonyl titanate may be employed. Phosphate or pyrophosphate derivatives may be used, including isopropyl tri(dioctylphosphate) titanate, isopropyl tri(dioctylpyrophosphate) titanate and titanium di(dioctylpyrophosphate) ocyacetate. Other titanate coupling agents manufactured by Kenrich Petrochemicals Inc., may be used, for example as disclosed by Monte and Sugerman, Polym.-Plast. Technol. Eng., 17(1), 95-122, (1981).
Titanate coupling agents may be used in amounts of 0.5% to 5% by weight of barium sulphate, an amount of 0.4% to 1% being preferred.
According to a first preferred aspect of the present invention a hot melt adhesive comprises a polymeric material, a radio opaque material and a coupling agent.
A wide range of polymeric material may be employed. These include polymeric materials used in the manufacture of conventional hot melt adhesives, including: synthetic rubber based pressure sensitive compositions, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, low or high density polyethylene or polypropylene copolyamides such as nylon 6, nylon 66 and nylon 12 or mixtures thereof, copolyesters, polymethanes, polyvinyl chloride, plasticised polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, phenol4ormaldehyde resins and styrene-butadiene rubbers. The aforementioned compounds may be used in admixture with tackifiers and/or extenders.
Radio opaque hot melt adhesives may be used in manufacture of surgical dressings in place of conventional hot melt adhesives used to secure the coverstock. The adhesives may also be used in manufacture of adhesive tape for assembly of dressings, making of otherwise radio-transparent surgical instruments and the like.
Adhesives in accordance with the first preferred aspect of this invention may find application in fastening of a wide range of articles, facilitating X-ray inspection of the joints, for example in concealed or inaccessible locations. Fastenings in construction of aircraft or other fabrications from X-ray transparent metals, may be inspected in this way.
According to a second preferred aspect of the present invention, a coating material comprises a polymeric material, a radio opaque filler and a coupling agent.
The coating material may, for example, comprise a paint, ink or other material adapted to be printed onto a substrate.
The coating material may be applied to a small area of an article such as a prosthesis, surgical instrument, surgical dressing or other absorbent dressing. Application to a prosthesis may facilitate inspection of the location thereof to check whether any movement has occured in situ.
The polymeric material may have a wide range of compositions. Acrylic polymers have been found to be particularly efficacious.
Coating compositions in accordance with this invention have a wide range of non-surgical applications. these include application to sheets for use as contrast media for X-ray photography, for example in stress analysis. X-ray opaque labels which might be otherwise unreadable may be applied to property which is liable to be stolen. Similarly X-ray readable markings may be applied to explosives.
