Abstract

A baby seat 11 is formed integrally in a vehicle seat 12 and is deployable from a first, stowed position, fig. 2, in which the base 13 of the baby seat forms the back of the vehicle seat or part thereof to a second, use position fig. 4 in which the baby seat is disposed securing means (19, fig. 6) for securing above the vehicle seat, and comprising a baby in the seat. The baby seat may have a back 17 which is recessed into the vehicle seat back in said first position and is flush with the vehicle seat back in said second position. The back 17 may be positioned atop the base 13 to form an arm rest for the vehicle seat (fig. 7). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle baby seat This invention relates to vehicle baby seats.
For the safe carriage of babies in automobiles baby seats are available which can be removably attached over the vehicle seat - the rear seat, for additional safety. These seats naturally take time and trouble to attach, and to remove when it is desired to use the seat for an adult, and involve a storage problem when not being used.
The present invention provides an arrangement which does not have the same problems.
The invention comprises a baby seat formed integrally in a vehicle seat and deployable from a first, stowed position in which the base of the baby seat forms the back of the vehicle seat or part thereof to a second, use position in which the baby seat is disposed above the vehicle seat, and comprising securing means for securing a baby in the seat.
The baby seat may comprise a baby seat back which is exposed when the baby seat is in its said second position. The baby seat back may be recessed into said vehicle seat back when said baby seat is in its said first, stowed position and may deploy with said baby seat to a second position in which it is at least substantially flush with said vehicle seat back.
Said baby seat back may also be deployable to a position atop the deployed baby seat to form an arm rest for said vehicle seat.
The arrangement may comprise hinge means in the base of the vehicle seat back for deployment of said baby seat.
Catch means may be provided releasably locking said baby seat in its deployed position, and such catch means may be comprised in hinge means in the base of the vehicle seat back for deployment of said baby seat.
Said securing means may comprise a strap or harness arrangement retractable or stowable with said baby seat.
The baby seat may further comprise a shelf or table top member deployable to convert said deployed baby seat to a shelf or table.
Embodiments of baby seats according to the invention will be now described with reference to the accompanying drawings,-in which: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a vehicle seat, having a baby seat in a first, stowed position; Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of the seat illustrated in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a front elevation like Figure 1 with the baby seat in its second, deployed position; Figure 4 is an elevation like Figure 2 with the baby seat in its deployed position as in Figure 3; Figure 5 is a plan view of the seat shown in Figures to 4; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the seat shown in Figures 1 to 5 showing a safety strap or harness arrangement; Figure 7 is a perspective view of the seat shown in Figures 1 to 6 in an arm rest configuration;; Figure 8 is a perspective view like Figure 7, with the seat in a table top or shelf configuration; and Figure 9 is a front elevation of another arrangement.
The baby seats 11 illustrated in Figures 1 to 9 are formed integrally in a vehicle seat 12 shown as the rear seat of an automobile. The baby seats 11 are deployable from a first, stowed position shown in Figures 1 and 2 and in the right-hand half of Figure 9 in which the base 13 of the baby seat 11 forms the back 14 of the vehicle seat 12 or part thereof to a second, use position as shown in Figures 3 to 6 and the left-hand half of Figure 9 in which the baby seat 11 is disposed above the vehicle seat base 15, and comprising securing means 16forsecuring a baby in the seat 11.
The baby seat 11 comprises a baby seat back 17 which is exposed when the baby seat 11 is in its said second position. The baby seat back 17 is recessed into the vehicle seat back 14 when the baby seat 11 is in its first; stowed position and deploys with the baby seat 11 to a second position in which it is flush or substantially so with the vehicle seat back 14.
The baby seat back 17 is further deployable as shown in Figure 7 to a position atop the deployed baby seat 11 to form an arm rest for said vehicle seat 12, and comprises a padded and upholstered face member 17a for this purpose.
The arrangement comprises hinge means 18 shown particularly in Figures 2 and 4 in the base of the vehicle seat back 14for deployment of said baby seat 11. Said hinge means 18 comprise a fixed hinge rod 1.8a about which the baby seat base 13 pivots and a second hinge rod 18b held in brackets 18e on the baby seat back 11 a and the fixed hinge rod 18a about which the baby seat back 17 pivots relative to the baby seat base 13.
Catch means - not shown, but of any convenient nature-- may be provided releasably locking said baby seat 11 in its deployed position, such catch means being comprised in said hinge means 18.
However, the padded and upholstered nature of the seat arrangement may be used to make the baby seat components a kind of interference fit in the seat back recess so that they tend to remain in any position by virtue of friction between the various surfaces.
Figure 6 illustrates a strap or harness arrangement 19 with lap belt 1 9a anchored to the hinge arrangement 18 and shoulder straps 1 9b with snap-on fittings 19e for attachment to lugs or rings 21 anchored to fixed structure in the vehicle. The hinge rod 1 8a will, of course, likewise be firmly anchored in fixed structure of the vehicle.
Figure 8 illustrates an arrangement in which a table top or shelf member 22 is deployed to convert the baby seat to a table top or shelf. Such member 22 can be integrally combined or can be separately fitted over or in place of a seat insert.
Where the baby seat is to double as an arm rest it is clearly best fitted in the middle of a back seat.
However, two such baby seats may be provided as shown in Figure 9, one on either side of the vehicle seat.
In yet a further alternative arrangement of the baby seat doubling as an arm rest, the arm rest can pull out from the seat first leaving the baby seat stowed in the seat back. The baby seat can then be pulled down to sit on top of the arm rest.
