Abstract

A leaf spring of composite, fibre reinforced plastics, material has an end fitting comprising an attachment member 14 lying in a recess 12 extending transversely of the end portion 11 of the spring, and a clamping member 15 extending around the end portion 11 and secured to the spring at 17 adjacent the end portion, wherein the clamping member 15 is deformed to interfit with the end portion 11 of the spring to take up production tolerances and assist in preventing relative movement. The clamping member may be pressed as at 18 into engagement with a depression 13 extending transversely of the end portion of the spring. Alternatively or in addition a side portion of the clamping member may be deformed as at 20 to engage an edge of the spring end portion. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Securing components to leaf springs of composite material This invention relates to lear springs made of composite, fibre reinforced plastics, material.
More particularly, the invention relates to an end fitting for such a spring, whereby a component may be secured to an end of such a spring.
Our European Patent Application Publication Number 0070122 discloses a leaf spring of composite material, with an end fitting comprising an attachment member lying within a recess extending transversely of the spring and defined by an end portion of the spring, and a clamping member extending around said attachment member and end portion of the spring and secured to the spring adjacent said end portion, to hold said attachment member in said recess. The attachment member may comprise a hollow tubular element or a metalrubber-metal bush to receive a mounting bolt.
The clamping member may be secured to the spring by, for example, a strap extending transversely around the spring and clamping member.
One characteristic of such an end fitting is that for security the attachment member must be tightly held within the recess in the end portion of the spring. This is assisted if the attachment member is itself secured, e.g. by welding, to the clamping member, but it is still necessary that the clamping member tightly embraces he end of the spring so that no relative movement therebetween is possible.
This is dependent on accurate maintenance of dimensional tolerances in production. It is the object of the present invention to provide an end fitting which is less exacting in this requirement.
According to the present invention, we provide a leaf spring of composite, fibre reinforced plastics material, having an end fitting comprising an attachment member lying within a recess extending transversely of the spring and defined by an end portion of the spring, and a clamping member extending around said attachment member and end portion of the spring and secured to the spring adjacent said end portion to hold said attachment member in said recess, wherein said clamping member includes at least one portion deformed to interfit with said end portion of the spring.
The end portion of the spring may be provided with at least one depression extending transversely thereof, into which the clamping member is deformed by a pressing operation.
Such deformation of the clamping member is advantageous, firstly because it takes up production tolerances to ensure that the clamping member fits tightly around the end portion of the spring and the attachment member. In addition, deformation of the clamping member to engage a depression in the spring assists in resisting relative movement between the clamping member and spring end portion.
As an alternative or additional mode of deformation of said clamping member, a side portion thereof may be deformed to engage an edge of said end portion of the spring.
Such engagement helps prevent relative movement between the clamping member and spring.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a side view of a spring. end fitting according to the invention; Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is shown part of a leaf spring 10 of composite, fibre reinforced plastics, material.
An end portion of the spring is indicated at 11, shaped to define a part cylindrical recess 12 extending transversely thereof. The end portion of the spring is formed to this shape in manufacture of the spring by a mould in which heat and pressure are applied to an assembly of fibres and plastics resin, to cure the resin and form the spring. On its surface opposite the recess 12, the end portion of the spring is formed, also in the moulding process, with a shallow depression 13 extending transversely thereof.
An attachment member 14 in the form of a hollow cylindrical bush lies in the recess 12 in the end portion of the spring. A clamping member 15 of sheet metal, e.g. steel, embraces the attachment member and end portion of the spring, and the free ends 16 of the clamping member lie against upper and lower surfaces of the spring adjacent its end portion. They are held to the spring by a strap 17 extending transversely around them and the spring. The strap may be secured by welding or deformation thereof.
According to the present invention, the clamping member 15 is deformed by a pressing operation, to enter the depression 13 in the spring end portion as indicated at 18. This pressing operation would be carried out by a suitably shaped press tool, after the clamping member is fitted and secured by strap 17.
The effect of this is to ensure that the end portion of the spring and attachment member 14 are tightly embraced by the clamping member, by taking up production tolerances.
Further, the inter-fitting between the portion 18 of the clamping member and the depression 13 in the spring end portion assists these parts against becoming displaced relative to one another.
If desired, more than one depression may be provided in the spring end portion, and the clamping member deformed by pressing into each such depression. As an alternative to the forming of such depression or depressions in the moulding process of spring manufacture, it would be possible to cut, e.g. by a suitable machine tool, the end portion of the spring to provide such formations.
A further possibility of deformation of the clamping member 15, which may be used alternatively or in addition to that above described, is shown particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Here part of the end portion 11 of the spring is shown in section, and it will be noted that it has a rounded edge 19. The side of the clamping member 15 has a pressed out tag 20 which engages the edge 19 of the spring end portion. This helps resist relative lateral displacement between the clamping member and spring end portion.
Deformation of the clamping member as indicated at 20 may be carried out before or subsequent to assembly of the clamping member with the spring to form the end fitting assembly.
