A cradle (1, 2, 3) for carrying out this method comprises a bridge element (1, 3) having feet (2) at its ends adapted to be placed on the top surface of the ground, suspending means (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) on the bridge element (1, 3) for gripping a housing (13) for a road marker and for suspending it in a desired position, relative to the feet (2). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A method and a cradle for securing a housing for a road marker in a hole in the ground Devices for marking roads are well known.
These devices comprise normally a housing for a road marker which housing is secured in a hole in the ground, whereafter a road marker is mounted on the housing.
The present invention relates to a novel method of securing a housing for a road marker in a hole in the ground and to a cradle for carrying out this method.
It is an object of the invention, to install the housing for a road marker in a hole in the ground in an improved manner, so that the risk of such a housing being disrupted by traffic is substantially reduced.
For this purpose the method according to the invention comprises securing the housing to a cradle, placing the cradle on the top surface of the ground around the hole so that the housing is suspended in the hole in such a way that the housing is free from the bottom -and side walls of the hole, pouring a liquid composition into the hole below, around and at least partly above the housing, allowing the composition in the hole to set and removing the cradle from the housing.
The cradle for carrying out this method comprises according to the invention a bridge element having feet at its ends adapted to be placed on the top surface of the ground, suspending means on the bridge element for gripping a housing for a road marker and for suspending the housing in a desired position, relative to the feet and therefore relative to the top surface of the ground.
In a suitable emodiment of the cradle, the suspending means comprises a shaft rotatably arranged on the bridge element and provided with a gripping element on its lower part and with a handle on its upper part.
The cradle and the method according to the invention will now be explained with reference to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a side view A of the cradle; Figure 2 shows a top plan view of the cradle; Figure 3 shows a side view B of the cradle; Figure 4 shows a view in perspective of the cradle carrying a housing for a road marker.
Two identical flat metal plates 1 are welded to a central bushing 3. At the free end of each plate 1 a foot 2 in the shape of a flat strip is present. The plates 1 secured to the bushing 3 form a bridge element having feet 2 at its ends. Furthermore each plate 1 is provided with a locking member 12. A threaded shaft 4 passes through the central opening of the bushing 3 in such a way that it can be freely displaced in an axial direction. The shaft 4 is provided at one end with a handle 5 and at the other end with a cyclindrical sleeve 7.
The cylindrical sleeve 7 is provided with a rectangular plate 8 and with two stop elements 9 respectively 10. A nut 6 is mounted on the shaft 4 and is positioned in such a way that the top surface of the plate 8 is at a desired vertical distance below the lower surface of the feet 2, whereafter the nut 6 is fixed to the shaft 4, for example by means of a weld (not shown).
The housing 13 for a road marker which is normally a cast metal or a cast concrete element is provided with a hole 14 and two recesses 18. A side wall 16 of the hole 14 is provided with two projections 17 and the opposite side wall 15 of the hole 14 is provided with two similar projections (not shown).
During normal use the housing 13 is secured in a hole in the ground, for example in a road surface in such a way that its top is just above top surface of the ground, for example the top surface of the road surface. After the housing 13 has been secured in said hole, a road marker (not shown), for example a rubber pad carrying reflecting elements or catseyes, is mounted in th hole 14 and the recesses 18 in the housing 13 in such a way that the projections 17 keep the rubber pad securely in place.
The mounting of the housing 13 in the ground, for example in a road surface, by means of the cradle according to the invention is carried out as follows.
When the rectangular plate 8 of the cradle is in the position as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the plate 8 and the housing 13 are displaced towards each other in such a way that the plate 8 enters the hole 14 in the housing 13.
This relative displacement is continued until the plate 8 is below the level of the projections 17. At this stage, when the locking elements 12 have entered the recesses 18 as well, the handle 5 is turned so that the shaft 4 is rotated about its central longitudinal axis.
This rotation is continued until the stop element 10 contacts the plate 2. The rotation of the shaft 4 causes rotation of the rectangular plate 8 until its end parts are below the projections 17 on the walls 15 and 16 (position as shown in Fig. 4). Since the locking elements 12 extend into the recesses 18, it prevents the housing 13 rotating together with the rectangular plate 8.
In the position as shown in Fig. 4, the housing 13 is secured to the rectangular plate 8, since both ends of said plate 8 are below the projections 17 on both walls 15 and 16.
In other words the plate 8 acts as a gripping element. In this position, th cradle is placed on the top surface of a road surface in such a way that both feet 2 are in contact with and are supported by the top surface of the road surface at opposite sides of the hole (not shown) in the road surface in which the housing 13 has to be mounted. In this way the housing 13 is suspended in the hole in the road surface in a predetermined vertical position relative to the road surface and in such a way that the housing 13 does not contact the bottom-and the side walls of the hole in the road surface.
In this position a suitable liquid compound, for example a composition comprising bitumen or polymers or concrete, is poured into the hole in the road surface below, around and at least partly above the housing 13, whereafter the composition is allowed to set.
After the composition has set the handle 5 is turned in the opposite direction until the stop element 9 contacts the plate 1 and the rectangular plate 8 is again in the position as shown in Fig. 2. When the rectangular plate 8 is in this position, the cradle is removed and the housing 13 is fixed in the road surface and is ready for use, which means that a road marker, for example a rubber pad carrying reflecting elements, can be secured to the housing 13.
Instead of two plates 1, it is possible to secure more than two plates 1 to the bushing 3, for example three plates 1, spaced apart at an angle of 1200 or four plates 1, spaced apart at an angle of 90 . Of course the number of feet 2 corresponds with the number of plates 1.
